BMIs 57th Annual Pop Awards - Arrivals

American Idol winner Jordin Sparks has announced she would like to give seitan and tofu a try.

“Eventually I’d like to be a vegetarian because I think it’s healthier for me,” Jordin said, according to famousveggie.net.

The singer recently revealed to Self Magazine that for the first time in her career, she’s brought along a  professional trainer on her tour with the Jonas Brothers.

“Last year, I didn’t do anything to stay in shape on tour,” Jordin said. “I just kind of loved the fact that I was on tour. But I was exhausted all the time, and I realize now, if I had worked out and ate healthier and made smarter choices, I would have had a lot more energy onstage.”

Will her new healthier lifestyle change include her own personal veggie chef on tour as well?

Will Jordin make the plunge and join Carrie Underwood and Kellie Pickler as Idol veggie queens?

Carol Leifer Gets Weirder: Now Jewish, Lesbian, AND Vegan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, July 9th, 2009 in Authors, Comedians, Videos.

Academy Of Television Arts & Sciences Presents From Stand-Up To Sitcom

Comedian Carol Leifer, author of When You Lie About Your Age, The Terrorists Win, recently became vegan.

She lost 20 pounds in the process and says if you go vegan, both your clothes and animals will thank you.

Leifer also took a moment to show her humorous side, saying “I recently became vegan because I felt that as a Jewish lesbian, I wasn’t part of a small enough minority. So now I’m a Jewish lesbian vegan.”

For awhile she had some company, as Jewish, lesbian comedian Dana Goldberg was at one point a vegan. Now, Goldberg continues to remain vegetarian.

You can watch Leifer’s PSA for veganism at peta.org.

Heather Mills Gets Praise From Hindu Leader For V Bites

Heather Mills Launches V-Bites Restaurant

Acclaimed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed recently applauded Heather Mills for bringing vegetarianism to the media eye and opening her new vegan restaurant and cafe V Bites, saying more celebrities should do the same.

“More world celebrities should come forward to promote vegetarianism and persuade their fans to go vegetarian, thus contributing to a healthier world,” Zed said, in a statement to USA Today Nevada. Zed is the president of the Universal Society of Hinduism.

Zed pointed out that Hinduism promotes strict vegetarianism, and insists on ahimsa (not harming living creatures) and renouncing animal slaughter and meat eating. It also suggests taking of sattvik (vegetables, fruits) and avoiding rajasik (eggs) and tamasik (meat, intoxicants) foods.

Recently Barack Obama hosted chef Bobby Flay and several men from local D.C. schools at the Kick Off Young Men’s barbecue on the White House South Lawn.

This makes, what, strike three?

Ray’s Hell burger visit with vice president Joe Biden, the Cheeseburger incident at Five Guys, and now a barbecue on the White House lawn.

Grilled steak, corn, and chicken were on the menu, but no where on the White House blog did it mention a veggie burger.

Mr. Obama doesn’t appear to be practicing what he preached last year on the campaign trail when he said encouraging Americans to eat more plant based foods can clean up the healthcare mess by reducing rates of obesity related diseases like diabetes.

At least First Lady Michelle Obama is promoting eating more vegetables.

Gabe Saporta, vegetarian and frontman for the band Cobra Starship, has a lifesize cardboard cut-out of himself on the Vans Warp Tour.

It’s located under the PETA tent, and will be present at every performance on the entire tour.

Cardboard Gabe is sporting a “Glamour Kills” t-shirt, which highlights the cruelty of animal testing in cosmetics.

Which is ironic, considering Gabe’s never been the “guyliner” type. We’re thinking it’s a more appropriate shirt for oh, let’s say, Davey Havok.

But it’s the message that counts.

Incidentally, do you know if your lipstick, lotion, or other makeup accessory is cruelty-free? Because it would be horrible to do an Ellen DeGeneres move and say you’re a vegetarian or vegan while fronting Cover Girl.

Check out leapbunny.org and find out. The “leaping bunny” can be found on all products where no new animal testing has been used in any phase of the product for the company, its laboratories, or its suppliers.

Natalie Portman Making Guest Appearance On Bravo’s Top Chef

2009 White House Correspondents Association Dinner

Natalie Portman will be making a special guest appearance on Bravo’s Top Chef in the upcoming season six, which premiers Wednesday, August 26th at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Since Nat is a hard core vegan, the cheftestants will probably be given the challenge of whipping up something meatless, eggless, and dairyless for the actress.

Top Chef had a vegan experience last year, when the Food Fighters were invited during the Thanksgiving episode and requested the chefs cater for their crew of 60 people, some of which were vegetarian.

The vegan cornbread stole the show last year. Will another veg dish be a big hit?

Crossing our fingers none of the cheftestants “chicken” out like last year’s Carla and go with a meaty dish when they really wanted to make a vegetarian one.

Ed Begley Jr. Gets His Own Treehugger.com Forum

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, July 9th, 2009 in Actors, Environment-Eco-Green.

Premiere Of Sony Pictures Classics Whatever Works - Arrivals

The granddaddy of all green, known for his home solar panels and getting around with his bum on a bicycle now has his own forum on the green and environmental site, treehugger.com.

This is a place where you can leave questions that Ed Begley Jr. himself will personally answer.

The forum is structured around this vegan’s upcoming book, Ed Begley Jr.’s Guide To Sustainable Living, which will be available September 8.

From treehugger.com:

“In the forum you can learn about Conservation, Production, and Management of resources in your life. You can ask Ed questions, view exclusive video and photos, learn about products Ed officially endorses or just personally loves.”

“Now Ed’s a busy guy, so it may take a little bit to get an answer to your questions, but we have a lot of helpful members and moderators, not to mention other forums where you might find interesting discussions.”

People are already asking questions about green investment clubs, air conditioning versus evaporative coolers, composting, and clean water issues.

Our favorite question so far is this one:

“Why don’t you ever talk about being a vegan? I have to assume you are, since you obviously are one of the leaders (or at least the biggest star) of the green movement. Do you feel there is too much of a stigma around it? Why not at least say “I try to be a vegetarian sometimes.” Bare in mind I am saying this as a fan of yours since the days of you as DJ’s principle on Roseanne. Perhaps you have talked about in print, but I am specifically referring to your reality show on Planet Green.”

Hey, we know Ed talks about his vegetarianism. But agree he should do it more often.

Visit the Ed Begley Jr. forum and post your questions now!
