Yoko Ono and Heather Mills may be worlds apart in character, age, and professions, but they have one thing in common: Both were married to former members of the Beatles!

Yoko and the late John Lennon posed for a very sexy, “Give Peace A Chance,” photo that was later adapted to promote vegetarianism, starring Corey Feldman and wife Susie Feldman, the tagline changed to Give Peas a Chance.

Heather had a brief, extremely public, and tumultuous relationship with Paul McCartney that didn’t last, but we’re crossing our fingers her new vegan restaurant V Bites does.

So between the two “wives of a Beatle,” who would you rather…

Asin Thottumkal Not Checked By PETA’s Meat Offender Database

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, July 8th, 2009 in Actresses, Bollywood, Not So Vegetarian.

The 2009 International Indian Film Academy Awards

Bollywood actress Asin Thottumkal has turned down PETA to promote vegetarianism.

“After I entered the film industry, I restricted my non-veg diet to fish and chicken,” she said. “I can’t, however, remain without non-veg food even for a single day. Therefore, it won’t be proper for me to involve myself in the campaign against non-vegetarian food.”

So this gal is no Kareena Kapoor or Mallika Sherawat.

But a big question burning in our minds is: Didn’t PETA do a background check?

Sure, the guys are excited to get celebrities naked, or uh, have celebrities promote a healthy and compassionate diet and lifestyle, but do they think before inviting them to take off their clothes, or uh, star in pro-vegetarian ads?

You would think the group would target well known celebs who don’t flip flop about their diet, like Kareena or Mallika, for example.

It’s great PETA wants to feature as many celebrities as possible in their campaigns, but they must be careful to choose those with the strongest convictions with a solid history of sticking to their principles.

Otherwise, we get these Naomi Campbell, “I’d rather go naked than wear fur”,… “Oh, wait. Who am I kidding, I still dig fur,” spokespersons.

Cannot Buy My Soul The Songs of Kev Carmody

After converting his ’59 Lincoln continental into an electric car, Neil Young was so excited to share the green love, he created an album inspired by it, Fork in the Road.

But not everyone was excited to hear “Cough Up The Buck” and “Fuel Line,” as one commenter on a website examining the lyrics to one of his songs said, “No one wants him to retire, but we really need to quit pretending that the lyrics don’t suck.”

Vegan singer and songwriter Missy Higgins recognizes how spreading the seemingly enthusiastic eco friendly love isn’t for every musical artist, so she stays away from it.

“I’ve tried, but I can’t figure out a way to do it without sounding cliché. Some people protest through their music, and some have to do it through other means. Midnight Oil does it pretty well [through their music]. They’re big environmentalists.”

You will probably never attend a memorial service where the guests dress like this.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals made an appearance at Michael Jackson’s memorial service and took the opportunity to promote vegetarianism with a sign that read, “Go Vegetarian For The Man In The Mirror.”

The pop star was vegetarian, and the group is currently trying to get permission to use a song he sang for a movie, “Ben,” to educate people on the conditions of rodents in research laboratories.

“Ben” features Michael singing about a boy’s love for his pet rat.

Veg Radio Host Casey Kasem Does His Final Countdown

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, July 8th, 2009 in Radio Hosts.

Celebrity Dads Honored With Golden Award

Casey Kasem, radio host known for counting down the top music hits on “American Top 40,” did his final countdown on his “American Top 20” radio show this weekend.

His fans are clutching their hearts, as Kasem didn’t even do an official farewell or give advance notice.

“He’s never been big on goodbyes or hellos, he lets his work speak for himself,” his wife said, in an interview with ABC news.

Besides radio, Kasem gave his voice to cartoon characters, with his most famous gig being the voice of dog Scooby-Doo’s human sidekick, Shaggy.

Kasem once said, “What’s terrific today is the idea that as a vegetarian you are not only making a contribution to the animals, but also to your health and the safety of the planet.”

Wherever his next endeavors lead him, one thing’s for sure. As his slogan sign-off says, he’ll keep his “feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.”

Michaelle Jean Causes Rise In Seal Meat Popularity

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, July 8th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Not So Vegetarian, Politicians.

Canadas Governor General welcomes Japans Imperial Couple

Bad news for seals everywhere.

In May, Canada’s governor general Michaelle Jean was taped by the media eating a raw seal heart she personally killed.

This, in combination with the recent European Union ban on imports of Canadian seal products has contributed to an increase in the request for seal meat at restaurants in Canada.

From the New York Times:

“The episode, which prompted extensive news media coverage in Canada, also cast a spotlight on seal-serving chefs like Mr. Lenglet. With the attention has come an increase in orders for Mr. Lenglet’s seal dishes, but also death threats, in the form of e-mail messages from Europe, where seal hunting protests have been most intense.”

Yikes!

Mr. Lenglet is the owner of Canadian restaurant Au Cinquième Péché in Montreal.

Bobby Flay: Likes Vegetarians, Not Interested In Veggie Burgers

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, July 8th, 2009 in Business, Chefs, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

HBO Presents The 2nd Season Viewing Party Of Flight Of The Conchords

Celebrity chef Bobby Flay sat down to talk nothing but burgers to Theday.com.

The king of the grill, unlike some celebrity chefs (cough, cough Gordon Ramsay) who have made jokes about electrocuting their children if they ever became vegetarian, acknowledges vegetarian dishes have importance in a restaurant.

Just don’t ask him to eat a veggie burger with you at dinner.

“I’m not interested,” Flay said, when asked what his feelings were on veggie burgers at Bobby’s Burger Palace, a new restaurant he’s opened.

“And I say that only because I’ve never had a veggie burger that I really liked. I’m very sensitive to vegetarians’ needs; I deal with it every day of my life. I think it’s a very, very important part of cuisine these days. It’s challenging to create creative vegetarian meals. That’s something we do at the other restaurants. But a veggie burger, I think it’s something I have not found that I can do well, so I’m not going to do it. I don’t want to serve something that’s subpar. ”

Well, thanks for the consideration Bobby and we’re happy you realize we’re important. But why leave something off the menu because you don’t like it? Isn’t it about the customer?

Many, if not most restaurants that serve burgers will have a vegetarian option available, even if it’s just a frozen patty they “customize” by putting their own fixings on it.

Bobby should bring in his own little focus group of veg heads, whip up a few creations, and let them decide what meatless patty should be on the Burger Palace menu.
