Do most Americans trust a vegan on the grill?

We sure hope so!

A segment on the TODAY show had the hosts discussing a new poll that found most Americans would rather have Bill Clinton in charge of their backyard grilling BBQ parties than any other president.

Clinton beat out former presidents Ronald Reagan and current POTUS Barack Obama.

Broccoli Obama Shirt

George Bush denounced the green vegetable, but President Barack Obama recently showed just how opposite he and the former GOP leader are by declaring how much he loves broccoli.

At the 2nd annual White House Kids State Dinner, two of the child attendees were given the opportunity to ask Obama a question. When asked what his favorite food was, Obama’s answer was the popular member of the cabbage family.

Food and Wine has a special feature on celebrity Fourth of July recipes.

If your usual 4th is about throwing faux meats on the grill and preparing potato salad with vegan mayonnaise, there’s nothing wrong with that.

But Marcus Samuelsson has a potato salad recipe that jazzes up the classic mayonnaise version and wins the taste buds of vegetarians, vegans and omnivores.

It also goes great with grilled veggie burgers.

Obama Turkey Pardon Discussed By PETA

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, November 21st, 2012 in Animal Issues, Food & Drink, Politicians.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is asking President Obama to do more than just pardon Cobbler and Gobbler–the two turkeys he is set to spare from the dinner table as every U.S. president does annually in tradition.

They’d like him to remove turkeys from America’s dinner plate entirely.

‘It makes light of the mass slaughter of some 46 million gentle, intelligent birds and portrays the United States’ president as being in some sort of business partnership with the turkey-killing industry,” said Ingrid Newkirk, president of PETA, in a statement to the Obama.

Presidential First Pets In White House History

Bo Obama Barack Obama

Regardless of who you’re voting for today, you can’t disagree that it hasn’t been an interesting four years in the White House on Pennsylvania Street.

Especially for the First Dog.

Initially, some were opposed to Bo Obama‘s presence in the Oval Office because he is indeed a breed.

But as months and years went by and many cute photographs were shot (thankfully, for blogs and other websites–public domain photographs like this one), even the staunchest shelter mutt-only proponent softened his heart, knowing Bo made Sasha, Malia, Barack and Michelle happier humans, not to mention a country that enjoyed being updated on his life amid stories of a bad economy, health care worries and other woes.

Almost every President has kept pets at the White House, some more exotic and interesting than shelter or breed dogs. Just take a look at a few of the First Animals that have occupied some of the highest positions a pet can hold.

Clinton: Sox the Cat was commonly referred to as “Executive Cat.” Sox has issues with the First Dog Buddy, but it’s unknown if he exercised any veto powers on him.

Americans may not be decided on who’s best to run the country yet, but they’re pretty sure who they’d rather have a burger with.

Obama Urged to End Factory Farming

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, May 17th, 2012 in Animal Issues, Politicians.

Barack Obama

The request for Obama to stop eating meat in public apparently hasn’t been put on any recent Congress agenda, but activists are hoping the President will consider a ban on factory farmed meat.

Wendy Matthews of Farm Sanctuary has started a petition that urges Obama to promote nutrition education programs that emphasize grains, fruits and vegetables; reduce the use of antibiotics in livestock animals; improve waste disposal methods on farms and eliminating practices used where animals are intensely confined, such as debeaking and tail-docking.

Nancy Pelosi

At least someone is following the advice to stop eating meat in public.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi dined with President Barack Obama and several other leaders in Washington, including House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev).

The Atlantic reports Pelosi ordered a “vegan sub with sprouts” from Taylor Gourmet, an Italian deli and market specializing in Philadelphia-style hoagies that happens to have a separate vegetarian menu with several sandwich options.
