Bill Maher Protests NASA Monkey Radiation Experiment

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, January 13th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Comedians, TV Hosts.

Overture Films' LA Premiere of "Capitalism: A Love Story" - Red Carpet

Bill Maher has written a letter to NASA administrator Charles Bolden, asking him not to allow a 1.75 million dollar radiation experiment on live squirrel monkeys.

The experiments are designed to test the effects of interplanetary travel.

“Squirrel monkeys are tiny but intelligent primates who live in large colonies with strong social structures,” writes Maher. “If this experiment goes forward, these highly intelligent animals will be sent to Brookhaven National Laboratory, where they will be exposed to radiation that will produce physical and likely mental damage. They will then be turned over to cognitive experiments to a researcher in Boston who commonly uses monkeys in protocols that involve electric shocks and other inhumane practices.”

Maher insists that previous NASA experiments using radiation and squirrel monkeys did not produce any useful results applicable to humans.

“You can find this just about anywhere,” Ellen said. “And it tastes just like beef.”

February could be a cold one, folks.

Ellen DeGeneres Tim Gunn–Who Would You

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, December 30th, 2009 in Fashion, Polls/Surveys, TV Hosts, Who Would You.

Ellen DeGeneres was named Woman of the Year by PETA for her contributions to promoting vegetarianism and animal welfare.

And who was voted as her male counterpart for the title?

None other than fur hating fashion guru Tim Gunn.

Both Ellen and Tim let their cruelty-free fashion sense do the accessorizing.

Fur is banned from Project Runway and Ellen’s given away vegan handbags to her audience.

You’d love to have both a faux fur coat and a leather-free bag, but if you had to choose between Tim or Ellen, who would you rather do…

Oprah Winfrey, Michael Vick Make Animal History

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, December 30th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Athletes-Games-Sports, TV Hosts.

Wayne Pacelle, CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, has blogged on what he feels were the biggest stories of the decade relating to animal welfare.

Sadly, some of the most newsworthy stories aren’t necessarily good ones, like the Michael Vick dog fighting incidents uncovered in 2007.

However, there were plenty of celebrities looking out for the animals in the past decade and Oprah Winfrey‘s been awarded her set of wings for featuring an episode of her show that criticized puppy mills.

“Since the broadcasts, we’ve rescued thousands of animals from puppy mills,” writes Pacelle. “Just this year, 10 states have approved legislation to impose tougher standards on large scale dog breeding operations, and the new standards have prompted a number of deficient puppy mills to shut down. And a raft of protests has cause pet stores to close or at least to stop selling puppies from mills.”

And O even featured some four legged stars on the cover of her magazine after visiting PAWS, Chicago’s largest no-kill animal shelter.

Let’s hope the next decade is filled with more trendsetters like Oprah and less of the history one would rather forget.

23rd Annual Genesis Awards - Press Room

2009 must be the year for vegan Ellen DeGeneres because she’s already nabbed 2 Best of Veggie Awards and it’s not even New Year’s Eve yet.

Her recent commitment to veganism pushed her into the Top 10 Veg Stories of the Decade by VegNews.

Now, Ellen has been named Woman of the Year by PETA.

“She made vegan pizza with Chef Wolfgang Puck, spoke with Dr. Neal Barnard about the health benefits of a vegan diet, and just in time for Thanksgiving, “talked turkey” about the everyday abuse of animals on factory farms with Jonathan Safran Foer, author of Eating Animals. Ellen also created pages on her Web site that feature insight, info, and tips about cruelty-free living. Visitors can find recipes, read about why Ellen went vegan, learn where to shop, and more.”

Let’s not forgot she shared her personal chef, Roberto Martin, on national television as he taught her fans to cook vegan pot pie and roast, hosted fellow veg Pamela Anderson to discuss the launch of her eco friendly perfume and received an award from the Humane Society of the United States.

What’s on Ellen’s goals for 2010 and the next decade?

Hopefully, getting Simon Cowell and the other American Idol judges to eat vegan tacos every week.

Jardine’s favorite interview was with none other than vegan activist and musician Chrissie Hynde.

The Hour returns to television January 4 2010.

If more moments like Juliette and Chrissie occur next year, producers might have to rename it The Hour of Veg Love.
