Being a vegan may win you a lot of friends in some parts of the world, but even in 2011 there’s no guarantee you won’t be mocked, criticized and downright discriminated against.

But is being a vegan even tougher than being gay/lesbian/bisexual? Portia weighed in.

Portia de Rossi has written a book, Unbearable Lightness, which details her struggles with an eating disorder that began in her early teens.

Now a vegan, de Rossi used Unbearable Lightness to discuss how a change in diet was an extension to her spiritual and emotional wellness as thinking about the cruelty of eating animals allowed her to think less selfishly–an emotion that consumed her when she was constantly obsessing over her personal appearance.

“While I have never felt more healthy and energized, the most important thing that happened to me when I stopped eating animals was a sense of connectedness. When I was suffering with an eating disorder, my life was solely about me. I was living through my ego and didn’t care about life around me. I was selfish and angry, and because I didn’t care about myself, I also didn’t care about littering in the street or polluting the environment.”

Ellen And Portia Treated By Activist Karen Dawn (Video)

Ellen and Portia, one of the most famous celebrity couples, will be hosted by animal rights activist Karen Dawn during her annual Thanksgiving feast in Pacific Palisades.

Already given the luxurious treatment of a hairstyling, spa and relaxing in the lounge, Ellen and Portia, named after DeGeneres and De Rossi, are two turkeys Dawn rescued from an LA slaughterhouse that will eventually live with her at her sanctuary, Gentle Barn.

“Thanksgiving has now become the most fun holiday of the year. And while yes, I do this, in part, to send some serious messages, the main message is simply: how much more fun is turkey day, when the turkeys are alive and well?” said Dawn, in this interview.

Portia de Rossi has revealed the moment it struck her that eating animals is way uncool.

As part of Oprah.com‘s collection of “A-ha Moments,” where celebrities reveal the moment something clicked, Portia said watching farm animals at play was enough to get her thinking.

“We had four cows and two calves and, after a few months, we took in a four-year-old Canadian Warmblood mare named Diva,” De Rossi explained about just moving in with her now wife, Ellen DeGeneres.

Ellen DeGeneres Wedding Cake Baker Talks Vegan Baking Challenges (Video)

Jane Lockhart, owner of Sweet Lady Jane bakery in Los Angeles, California, baker to the stars and creator of the vegan, red-velvet cake for Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi‘s wedding, has an exclusive interview with Radar Online where she shares her stories of baking for celebrities.

 

“Ellen and Portia’s cake-Portia came in with her mom, who was visiting from Australia and showed me the ring that Ellen had had made for her which was a beautiful, but simple vine design in diamonds,” Lockhart said. “We took that simplicity and elegance and continued that vine design on the cake. It was their favorite vegan red velvet.”

During an interview with Access Hollywood, Lockhart gave some secrets to the substitutes for baking vegan and the challenges she faced with Ellen and Portia’s cake.
