Jane Lockhart, owner of Sweet Lady Jane bakery in Los Angeles, California, baker to the stars and creator of the vegan, red-velvet cake for Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi‘s wedding, has an exclusive interview with Radar Online where she shares her stories of baking for celebrities.

“Ellen and Portia’s cake-Portia came in with her mom, who was visiting from Australia and showed me the ring that Ellen had had made for her which was a beautiful, but simple vine design in diamonds,” Lockhart said. “We took that simplicity and elegance and continued that vine design on the cake. It was their favorite vegan red velvet.”

During an interview with Access Hollywood, Lockhart gave some secrets to the substitutes for baking vegan and the challenges she faced with Ellen and Portia’s cake.

Ellen DeGeneres and wife Portia de Rossi have become the latest celebrities to show support for representative Jared Polis‘ bill that would enable schools to provide more vegetarian meals and non-dairy beverage options in cafeterias.

The ladies have sent a written letter to Congress, urging them to back the Healthy School Meals Act.

Valentine’s Day is over, but if you share the love of all things vegetarian with your partner, the passion lasts 365 meals a year. There are several great vegetarian couples in the media eye.

Here are a few favorites.

Dennis Kucinich and Elizabeth Kucinich. Dennis is one of the few vegan politicians (or at least the few who come clean about it) and has been open about how switching to a vegan diet alleviated several health problems. Wife Elizabeth is the public affairs director of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a group that advocates a vegan diet.

Zooey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard

Zooey Deschanel’s vegetarian platter is a little harder than average to create. As the contestants of Top Chef learned, Zooey not only does vegetarian, but needs gluten-free and no soy.  Ben better study up on the cookbooks when he’s not on tour with Death Cab for Cutie.

The couple decided to go veg together after a dinner date discussion of the ethics of animals in fashion.
The two were honored by the Humane Society for publicly advocating better treatment of animals.

Ever wonder what the story is behind the man who makes Ellen DeGeneres‘ vegan tacos, roast and pot pie?

Roberto Martin is the kind of man every woman wants–because he knows how to cook a good veg meal!

Martin, the youngest of 15 children, originally wanted to dice the Obamas and Gores of the world instead of onions.

He studied political science at Cal State Fullerton.

He later studied at the Culinary Institute of America and found himself cooking for celebrities shortly thereafter.

Cooking for a family with a diabetic child was Martin’s motivation to switch to plant based cooking.

“Now that I cook exclusively vegan meals for Ellen and Portia, I’ve learned that the variety of experiences in my life has helped me along the way,” Martin says on Ellen’s website. “I know what it’s like to change your habits, to remove animal protein from your diet, and I plan on sharing my experience with you. Even if you start with just one meal a week, you can learn to cook healthy and delicious vegan meals without having to make a big change.”

Let’s not forget that sexy Wayne Pacelle was also named CEO of the Humane Society. His efforts to protect animals and his good looks won him a spot on the Most Eligible Bachelor of D.C. list.

Zooey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard tied the knot this weekend, according to Usmagazine.com.

As we told you earlier, both Zooey and Ben are veg and have friends/family with similar diets.

The folks at green gossip site, Ecorazzi.com, came up with their list of top 5 vegan celebrities for the year 2009.

Ellen DeGeneres took the #1 spot!

“If I could, I’d write a book called Why Ellen DeGeneres Is Cooler Than PB&J. You see, Ellen has perhaps the most attractive trait any celebrity could posses: the ability to speak-up for the causes she believes in without turning people off. …To thank her for all your compassion and coolness, we offer Ellen the biggest slice of vegan cake we can find and the title of our NUMBER ONE Vegan Celebrity of 2009.”

It’s easy to see why Ellen can’t be beat. She and wife Portia de Rossi received the Humane Society’s Wyler Award for their animal activism. She was a staunch supporter of Proposition 2. She even gives away free vegan goodies on her show.
