Portia de Rossi has revealed the moment it struck her that eating animals is way uncool.

As part of Oprah.com‘s collection of “A-ha Moments,” where celebrities reveal the moment something clicked, Portia said watching farm animals at play was enough to get her thinking.

“We had four cows and two calves and, after a few months, we took in a four-year-old Canadian Warmblood mare named Diva,” De Rossi explained about just moving in with her now wife, Ellen DeGeneres.

“The night she arrived I was so worried about her that I couldn’t sleep… So at five o’clock in the morning, I went out to the pasture to keep an eye on her.”

“Then I witnessed something extraordinary. The cows formed a single-file line, and one by one they touched noses with the new horse as a greeting. The calves wouldn’t approach on their own, so one of the cows nudged them forward. Each of the babies touched the horse’s nose, then jumped around and played like little children.”

De Rossi said she began to cry, thinking she couldn’t “possibly keep eating” the animals.

She and wife DeGeneres went vegan together after having conversations about the ethics of animal products like purses and clothing.

What was your A-ha moment for going veg?
