Zac Brown Band

The Zac Brown Band‘s lead singer Zac Brown may have ruffled PETA feathers when he said chicken was the new tofu, but he’s proving he’s not completely turned off by vegetarian food.

He wanted Parade magazine to know the spicy, ginger marinade he was planning to market was vegan.

And now, we learn a camp for children with neurological disorders such as Tourette’s, ADHD and Asperger’s Disorder may have a vegan-friendly menu.

Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution Food Truck

BBC News has a nice clip of what Jamie Oliver‘s Food Revolution truck looks like inside and out. The chef will be touring some of the most impoverished neighborhoods of Los Angeles with the vehicle to teach cooking skills to individuals, children and families.

The truck that will make stops in South LA, Boyle Heights, Long Beach and Santa Ana contains eight full kitchen stations, plasma screens and an inflatable stage.

Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn

“If you start to use the v-word, people get nervous. Somehow, there’s a feeling from years ago that vegans are strange. There are so many negative connotations. There’s so much more to talk about apart from a word. It’s about nutrition and improving your health.”

Dr. Caldwell Essestyn, cardiologist and author of Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, who saw a trend in the cholesterol levels of his patients who adopted a plant-based diet. Esselstyn recently attended a screening of Forks Over Knives, a film which examines the claim that major diseases that prematurely claim so many lives each year are caused by diet, particularly one heavy in animal products.

Esselstyn is a vegan, but told  CNN’s Eatocracy the film’s creators tried to leave it out of the film as much as possible.

Because it’s not about the “V” word. It’s about the “P” word. Go plant power!

Thumbs Up Cat Jimmy Is Tough Critic (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, March 3rd, 2011 in Animal Issues, Humor, Offbeat, Research + Science, Videos.

Anyone who’s ever owned a cat knows how picky the little creatures can be.

Wouldn’t it be nice if they gave you the “thumbs down” when they didn’t like the new litter instead of defecating outside the box?

Jimmy is a polydactyl cat, meaning he has a congenital physical anomaly that causes more than the usual number of toes on his paws. You may find more cats like him on the East Coast of the United States or in South West England.

Jimmy is one opinionated cat who puts the movie critics to shame.

We bet Jimmy gives thumbs up to spaying and neutering, shelter adoption and lots of love. Thumbs down to buying pets from shops and that annoying dog next door that jumps over the fence just to bark at him and poop in yard.

Wynn Las Vegas

As reported earlier, vegan cookbook author and chef Tal Ronnen joined the chefs at Wynn Las Vegas and Encore casino and hotel restaurants, revamping the menus to make them very veggie heavy.

Officials from Wynn have shared descriptions of what some of the entrees Ronnen helped add to an already vegan-friendly menu, thanks to Steve Wynn‘s decision to go vegan. Here’s a sample of the reward you can get from the kitchens of Lakeside Grill, SW Steakhouse, Sinatra and more, even if you lose at the slot machine.

Jamie Oliver On Lamb Killing–More People Would Go Vegetarian

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, March 3rd, 2011 in Animal Issues, Chefs, Food & Drink.

Jamie Oliver

Jamie Oliver sparked controversy when he killed a lamb on television a few years ago. Part of the reason animal activists were so disturbed was because the animal had not been stunned before its throat was slit.

In hindsight, Oliver said he would never perform such an act again. But if every meat eater did that, there might be less of them.

From his interview with LA Times:

“I’ve probably ordered about 10,000 in my career. When you’re there in the village, and it’s their normal tradition, I actually felt quite shallow if I didn’t do it. Did I like it? No, it was bloody horrible. Will I do it again? Probably not.”

Rachael Ray Was Right–Pit Bulls Are Nicer Dogs

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, March 3rd, 2011 in Animal Issues, Chefs, Research + Science.

Rachael Ray

Rachael Ray said she was devoting her life to only owning pit bull dogs because she wants to prove there are no bad dogs, only bad dog owners.

“I just think it’s my mission in life to prove to people that there’s no such thing as an evil animal,” Ray said. “There are only evil humans.”

The Food Network chef now has data to back up her opinion, as a study conducted by the American Temperament Test Society showed pit bulls scored higher in tests that measure a dog’s ability to get along with people and other animals.
