The Zac Brown Band‘s lead singer Zac Brown may have ruffled PETA feathers when he said chicken was the new tofu, but he’s proving he’s not completely turned off by vegetarian food.

He wanted Parade magazine to know the spicy, ginger marinade he was planning to market was vegan.

And now, we learn a camp for children with neurological disorders such as Tourette’s, ADHD and Asperger’s Disorder may have a vegan-friendly menu.

Zac Brown of the country music Zac Brown Band must have heeded PETA’s advice when it suggested months ago he offer vegan food at the band’s “Eat and Greet” sessions.

If you recall, the band, who’s famous for their song “Chicken Fried,” initially responded to the request on Twitter with a “Dear PETA – Plants are living creatures too… Bacon had a mother but so did Pickle. It takes life to support life – welcome to the planet.” Moments later, another Tweet surfaced that said, “Chicken is the new tofu.”

Now, Zac Brown is boasting his new spicy, ginger marinade is vegan. What’s next? Seitan Fried Steak.

After being sent a letter from PETA that suggested they consider a vegetarian lifestyle and encourage fans to do the same, the Zac Brown Band has fired off a response on Twitter.

And it’s not exactly “We’ll have to try that sometime.”

“Dear PETA – Plants are living creatures too… Bacon had a mother but so did Pickle. It takes life to support life – welcome to the planet.”

The band must not have gotten their point across in one Tweet, because the next day, another reply was posted.

“Chicken is the new tofu.”

Sure.

And heart disease is the new white meat.

Southern living may be stereotyped as buttered rolls and pork chops, but who says country music stars can’t have breaded tofu in place of chicken fried steak?

The CMT blog reports The Zac Brown Band has been asked by PETA to consider going vegetarian and think twice about the values their song Chicken Fried is portraying.

“Life on the farm isn’t what it used to be,” PETA’s representative Michelle Cho wrote. “Green pastures and idyllic barnyards have been replaced by windowless, cramped, filthy metal sheds. Animals are treated as nothing more than products, with little regard for their health, happiness, or basic needs.”

The group also sent Coy Bowles,  Zac Brown,  Clay Cook,  Jimmy De Martini,  Chris Fryar and John Driskell Hopkins fake meats and suggested they host “eat and greet” sessions serving veggie food.

Maybe the boys will pick up a copy of Ann Jackson’s Cookin Southern Vegetarian Style and serve homemade jambalaya at the next big gig.
