“Caring about what you eat and trying to make it tasty and educate the public is not some kind of fringe activity of tree huggers but, a matter of fundamental survival and continued vitality of our society starting right here with my family and my employees.”

Steve Wynn during a speech at Vegas Uncork’d, a food event sponsored by Bon Appetit magazine that featured vegan cooking demonstrations and discussion at Wynn’s Las Vegas resort.

We told you to stick around and it paid off! Here’s part two of our interview with news anchor Nicole Lapin.

You’ve been involved with several charitable organizations and campaigns like the United Nation’s “Girl Up” initiative. Are there any vegetarian, animal rights, sustainable food or environmental organizations you’re particularly fond of?
You caught me! I can’t say no when a good cause asks for my help…I know, I know, that sounds so Pollyannaish, but it’s true. I have done some work for the Humane Society and am happy to help with any other organizations that need it.

I’ve read in some of your other interviews that you’ve mastered putting together a vegan meal in the most unlikely of places, including gas stations. Can you name some healthy vegan ideas from places where it’s hard to find vegan food like vending machines and convenience stores?
I have to say, I’ve eaten every meal at Starbucks more often than I’d like to admit. They have some really wonderful new options with Two Moms In The Raw and Peeled dried fruit.

Wynn Las Vegas

The already vegan-friendly Wynn Las Vegas will be getting a veggie face-lift, as Steve Wynn has invited vegan chef Tal Ronnen to join the hotel’s culinary team.

After going vegan, the casino mogul put several vegan items on the menus at each of his restaurants. He also distributed a DVD copy of the film that inspired him to do so, Eating, to all of his employees. In addition, Wynn’s will was modified to include the Humane Society as a beneficiary.

“It’s an honor and pleasure to work with Steve Wynn, who recently became vegan, and his incredible team of chefs,” Ronnen said, according to VegNews.

"Eating" DVD

"Eating" DVD

“Eating,” is the DVD documentary casino mogul Steve Wynn watched that convinced him to go vegan. He subsequently ordered copies for all his employees.

Eating promises to touch on the effects of meat and dairy on human health, the environment and animal cruelty.

Vegan.com found it stayed true to its promise on the second and third claims, but isn’t completely thrilled with the film’s take on plant-based diets and health and you might be surprised to hear why.

“Basically, “Eating” frames a low-fat vegan diet as a cure-all for just about every physical malady. And, at one point, there’s even a suggestion that cancer patients bypass chemo and radiation and just go vegan. There are so many varieties, stages, and grades of cancer that this advice strikes me as completely reckless. Certainly, there’s much to be said for a plant-strong diet. And it’s hard to make the case of there being anything more healthful than a well-planned vegan diet. But activists always need to be looking for weaknesses in their arguments.”

Steve Wynn Will Includes Animals But Not Like Ingrid Newkirk

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, November 9th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Business.

We’ve already discovered that Steve Wynn has changed his will to include donations to the Humane Society if he should go to that big casino in the sky anytime soon.

Wynn insists he’s nowhere near that point, but still wanted to show his concern for animals.

He told Las Vegas Weekly:

“I’ve become an animal rights activist. I’m taken care of myself for the rest of my life. So I decided to change my will the last few days in case I croak. I’m not about to, and I’m not planning on that for a long time. But I’ve changed my will to show my concern for animal rights.”

Wynn explained that conditions found in factory farms were some of the motivators to change his diet and will.
