Carol J. Adams "The Sexual Politics of Meat"

Carol J. Adams "The Sexual Politics of Meat"

“There’s this expectation that men should eat like a man and that women should serve men meat, should give him what he wants. There’s this conception that vegetarianism was okay for women and those associated with women. Homophobia is connected to meat-centered definitions of maleness. The idea that men should eat meat is rampant in our culture. Being taught to believe a diet like that is good for them. I hate to break it to you. But meat eating can cause [impotence] when you get older. This is not healthy. Men are not benefiting form the sexual politics of meat.”

Carol J. Adams, feminist and author of The Sexual Politics of Meat, Living Among Meat Eaters and How To Eat Like A Vegetarian.

“Really the thing is to understand that this lifestyle is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. You want to make the changes that you will stay with your whole life. You know, go to the Red Bamboos out there that give you the types of food where it’s transitioning you away from the meat and dairy. If you try to go from eating meat to straight up raw food you’re not gonna last. So little by little just phase out the poisonous foods and replace them with healthy substitutes.”

John Jospeh, author of Meat Is For Pussies, on how a new vegetarian or vegan can make the transition.

“I want everyone to join me in saying a big ‘no’ to milk from mega-dairies. Why should people put up with factory milk from battery cows when we’ve already proven we don’t want eggs from battery hens? It’s hardly the milk of human kindness. We can do better than this, so please go to www.notinmycuppa.com and tell the supermarkets how you feel about this today’.”

Chrissie Hynde, on a proposal to bring Nocton Dairies, a mega-dairy farm to Britain. The facility would house several thousand cows in indoor sheds and require each animal to produce 10,000 liters of milk each year, some sources cite as being as much as 43% higher than the national average. Cows subjected to produce large volumes of milk like that is expected at a large farms are more likely to experience medical issues, such as mastitis, an infection in the cow’s udder.

“When I realized what went into the fur on your gloves or on your jacket, what goes into killing those animals, it ripped my heart out. You don’t have to kill an animal because you want to be hot and fly. It’s not the 16th century anymore.  We’ve got central heating for God’s sake. And you can get a fake fur coat. I have one. It’s fabulous.”

“I don’t worry about somebody who’s already vegan. I’m interested in exposing this cuisine to people fighting heart disease or cancer. We lead the world in cancer, heart disease, stroke, obesity, and diabetes. Kids are obese and diabetic. I can’t imagine what it’s like to grow up that way.”

Tal Ronnen, vegan chef and author of “The Conscious Cook,” who’s just signed up to expose Vegas fans to the vegan cuisine, as he’ll be creating dishes for the Wynn Las Vegas hotel menu.

“You don’t need to torture a bunch of helpless rats to figure out fast food is addictive. Nevertheless, for those who feel the need to read research to verify the obvious, studies have now been done that show fast food, loaded with fat, salt and sugar, causes rats to behave as if they were hooked on heroin. As opposed to those fed the salad bar option who consume normally, rats fed a fast food diet will endure electric shocks, etc. to keep eating what they crave. When deprived of their fast food, they’d rather starve for days on end than eat the healthier options.”

“It’s a complex issue, but to put it briefly: raising animals for food is the primary cause of: land degradation, air pollution, water shortage and climate change. If we care about the planet, then eating vegan is an excellent step we can all take.”

Kathy Freston, author of the hot-selling book, Veganist, who recently appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show to talk about the lifestyle and help the Harpo Studios crew go vegan for a week.

A couple of years ago, Freston wrote an article that appeared in the Huffington Post on the effects going vegetarian part-time has on the environment. According to Environmental Defense, if every American skipped just one meal of chicken per week and substituted it with a vegetarian meal, it would save the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide as taking half a million cars off the road.

“Stress lowers your pH, causes inflammation and makes your cortisol levels spike. There are places where we might be stuck in stinking thinking, so it’s important we spend some time with self-reflection. It’s not just what you’re eating, but what’s eating you. If you have the “perfect” diet but are riddled with stress and anxiety, that’s not good. It’s not just about health. It’s about happiness.”
