Otarian, The Planet s Most Sustainable Restaurant - Bleecker Street Opening

Radhika Oswal was a “hungry vegetarian” traveling with her husband, Pankaj Oswal, chairman of Burrup Holdings Ltd. in Australia, when all she could find left and right were pizza and burger joints.

This was the reason she decided to launch Otarian, a global chain of vegetarian fast food restaurants, with a recent opening in New York City.

The couple is the same one that forbid construction workers from eating meat while building their billion dollar mansion in Australia.

Oswal jokes starting the restaurant was like getting her “PhD is vegetarianism and sustainability.”

The menu is lacto-ovo with several vegan options and according to Planet Green, the corporate office is aiming for a 98% recycling and composting rate.

Plus, there are carbon values for each item on the menu, comparing it to the carbon value of a meat item.

And how’s this for a fast food reminder? Otarian offers combo meals.

The carbon combos on the menu save at least 3 kilograms of carbon compared to a similar meat one.

“What’s really big is that three kilograms of carbon is equivalent to the amount emitted by driving 21 miles in an eco-car or 7 miles in a normal car, and is more than the average person’s journey to work every day,” Radhika said.

Counting calories is so yesterday.

2009 UNICEF Snowflake Ball

Recently we told you about chef Dave Lieberman, author of 10 Things You Need To Eat, and his bravado regarding his quinoa cooking skills.

Seems Dave recommends you buy his book to teach you how to cook it, versus reading the instructions off the package.

Having never tried Lieberman’s advice, we’ll bite our tongues, especially since he recommends some many other tasteful, vegetarian foods.

In the 10 list of things, only one item, seafood, isn’t plant based.

Take a look at some of the others you may want to add to your shelf or refrigerator.

Tomatoes–”Loaded with lycopene, a phytochemical that gives tomatoes their color; strong anti-cancer and cardiovascular-protective properties. Slightly sweet, savory and acidic.”

Avocados–”Loaded with monounsaturated fats and contain no cholesterol; high in potassium (60% more than a banana) and fiber; low in calories.”

Nuts–”Contain Omega 3 fatty acids, improves energy levels, lowers coronary heart disease, raises HDL cholesterol (good kind), lowers triglycerides (bad kind).”

Berries (all)–”Loaded with nutrients and enormous levels of antioxidants.”

Apline Skiing - Day 12

Bode Miller is an Olympic and World Championship Gold Medalist in alpine skiing who grew up a vegetarian on a small family farm of 450 acres of organic produce.

These days he runs his own organic farm Turtle Ridge much the same way–no pesticides and keeping the affairs among those closest to the farm.

Turtle Ridge, which has a variety of produce, including tomatoes and artichokes, does not sell to retailers, only locals.

Not only is buying local great for the farmer, it saves carbon emissions and usually results in a better tasting vegetable.

According to localharvest.org, most produce in the U.S. is picked 4-7 days before put on the grocery store shelves and travels an average of 1500 miles before it’s sold.

Makes straight from the garden and a 4 mile bike ride to pick up corn sound so much more refreshing!

Race car driver Leilani Munter has recorded a PSA for Athletes Go Green on the effects of food on the planet as a way to raise environmental awareness.

Eco friendly racing is not an oxymoron when you’re Leilani, who encourages fans to get involved by putting recycling bins at the track, selling clothing made from plastic bottles and recruiting sponsors to display their green messages during race time.

Now she’s hoping NASCAR and IndyCar fans will skip the barbeque after the next big race.

“I think a lot of people don’t realize that more greenhouse gas emissions go into our atmosphere from raising animals for food than all of the planes, trains, ships, automobiles, SUVs and all other forms of transporation combined,” Leilani says in the video. “Raising animals produces methane, which is 21x more heat trapping than CO2. So if you want to do something good for the environment that’s easy to do, cut back on your meat intake.”

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian may have handled her pussy inappropriately, and no, we’re not talking about another sex tape.

Kim posted a photograph of herself holding this gorgeous kitty on Twitter, and as Ecorazzi reports, two different animal rights groups are weighing in on the situation.

PETA is ready to dig its claws in her, according to X17 Online.

“Kim Kardashian isn’t the only person who mistakenly thinks that because a mother cat picks up her kittens by the scruff of the neck that a supportive hand under the rump isn’t needed.”

But unlike Kim, the cat doesn’t appear to be known for its big booty and may not need the support, according to RSPCA.

“But if it’s a larger cat, we’d put the hand under the rump. She’s at least half right.”

Which side do you take?

Sarah Silverman "The Bedwetter"

Besides being about pee, Sarah Silverman‘s new book, The Bedwetter, is a memoir filled with childhood and adolescence memories, both painful and hilarious.

One of the more undesirable memories Silverman has is when several high school athletes held her down in the school cafeteria and put cold cuts in her mouth because she was a vegetarian.

“Yeah, it was awful. It really felt rape-y,” Silverman told Vanity Fair.

Disgusting.

Were they expecting to make foie gras out of her?

Sure hope those bad boys got more than a few days of detention.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, April 19th, 2010 in Business, Chefs, Restaurants.

Shrove Tuesday At Capital Gold

Aldo Zilli has taken best restaurant in The Independent‘s Best of Green awards.

Signor Zilli was converted into a vegetarian Italian restaurant in London, Zilli Green, a few months ago.

Although the UK Metro came up short with nice things to say about it, The Independent says Zilli Green wins for featuring multi-cultural seasonal dishes and avoiding the stereotypical vegetarian entrees like veggie burgers.

Bonus: The head chef at Zilli Green, Enzo di Marino, has been a vegan for 12 years, so he’s had plenty of experience sampling anything served to you.
