“Leona has demanded that only veggie food be made available for everyone – and members of the crew are threatening to quit.”

Aldo Zilli‘s wife Nikki says the death of her father prompted Aldo to change his diet.

Aldo not only changed his habits at home, but his services to others as well, relaunching one of his signature restaurants as an all vegetarian one, Zilli Green.

“Dad was very active and at more than 6ft tall he wasn’t overweight for his height,” Nikki Zilli said in the Daily Mail. “But he really liked his food and, looking back, he ate a lot of red meat, pasta and bread and not enough oily fish, fruit and vegetables. We know now how important diet is in reducing the risk of bowel cancer.”

Research has already shown that a diet high in red meat could result in you more likely to develop cancer. And according to the Cancer Project, one study published in the journal of Cancer Research found subjects who ate red meat had higher levels of compounds that damage DNA, which is why cancer develops in the first place.

When the subjects were placed on a red meat, red meat with high fiber or a vegetarian diet for just 15 days, the red meat dieters had the greatest levels of N-nitrosocompounds, which damage DNA.

The red meat with fiber dieters had lower levels of N-nitrosocompounds and the vegetarians had the lowest.

It’s thought that the fiber found in fruits and vegetables provides extra protection against cancer.

Aldo Zilli’s Vegetarian “Zilli Green” Best Green Restaurant

Shrove Tuesday At Capital Gold

Aldo Zilli has taken best restaurant in The Independent‘s Best of Green awards.

Signor Zilli was converted into a vegetarian Italian restaurant in London, Zilli Green, a few months ago.

Although the UK Metro came up short with nice things to say about it, The Independent says Zilli Green wins for featuring multi-cultural seasonal dishes and avoiding the stereotypical vegetarian entrees like veggie burgers.

Bonus: The head chef at Zilli Green, Enzo di Marino, has been a vegan for 12 years, so he’s had plenty of experience sampling anything served to you.

Shrove Tuesday At Capital Gold

Some say a man’s top loves are cars, food and women.

At Lloyd Motors Alfa Romeo showroom in the UK, chef Aldo Zilli brought almost all of them together.

Zilli, who recently opened a vegetarian restaurant in the Soho area of London, was there to prepare a dish of ravioli stuffed with wild mushroom, sundried tomato and goats cheese in an arrabiata sauce.

Audience members got a chance to ask Zilli about his cooking and restaurant and left with a signed copy of his latest cookbook.

Zilli enjoys the event because it also promotes Alfa Romeo cars.

“I have seven older brothers who all had Alfa Romeo cars when I was growing up. When I got married I got an Alfa Romeo – hence the reason I got married twice,” he joked.

Zilli has performed cooking demonstrations in the car showrooms before and said it’s good for the company because they end up selling a few cars that day.

Full bellies must bring on multi-thousand dollar purchases!

Celebrity Chefs Launch Taste Of London 2007

Aldo Zilli‘s vegetarian Italian restaurant, Zilli Green, open a couple of months ago and after Metro sampled the food, atmosphere and service, it came up a little less than satisfied.

Zilli Green was given a (ouch) 1 out of 5 stars for everything from cold tempura and portabello mushroom to ignorant service.

Metro hints that you can get vegetarian Italian food anywhere that serves Italian, presumably by leaving the meatballs off.

“Some of the best meat-free cooking in the world is Italian; you can easily eat an entirely vegetarian meal in a conventional Italian restaurant without even being aware of it.”

Zilli Green may be a little shaker in its infancy, but it is only two months old, and like any business, there’s probably several details to work out.

Not only is Zilli Green giving London a vegetarian Italian option, but there are several items on the menu listed as vegan, such as ice cream.

And despite having pasta shops on every corner, some specifically vegetarian and even vegan Italian eateries have worked, as the case with Chrissie Hynde‘s Vegiterranean in the U.S.

Might it be reasonable for more Soho vegetarians to give Zilli Green a try and let the staff politely know where improvements can be made?

Celebrity Chefs Launch Taste Of London 2007

Aldo Zilli is opening his new vegetarian Italian restaurant, Zilli Green, next weekend in Soho in London.

Zilli says it was none other than Meat-Free Monday man Paul McCartney himself who encouraged him to change the food on his menu and on his own plate.

From News Of The World:

“A few years ago, Paul wrote to me about the amount of meat I had on the menus at my London restaurants,” Zilli said. “He felt we didn’t need to offer exotic meats, such as ostrich. I had to agree.”

“Creating vegetarian Italian dishes was a challenge. But it’s a good move in a society where vegetarianism is now common place.”

Zilli Green is set to open this weekend on Valentine’s Day.

Take your sweetie there to celebrate love, good food and good health.
