Jamie Oliver Targeted By Naked, Pregnant Moms For Animal Rights

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, March 19th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Chefs.

Jamie Oliver Opens New Dinner Show

We’re sure Jamie Oliver likes naked women, but probably not attacking him in this manner.

When we told you British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s “Save Our Bacon” television show would educate people on the conditions some farm animals live in, we thought it might be a UK Prop2 2-like step forward in encouraging better treatment of animals before slaughter.

Oliver advocates buying British pork, versus cheaper pork produced elsewhere where animal welfare isn’t considered.

While some may be thankful for this small potential advancement, PETA is not satisfied and has targeted the celebrity chef for protests.

“The answer to saving pigs is not to buy British pork, it’s to go vegetarian,” PETA said, according to the UK Telegraph.

A spokesperson for Oliver, however, is defending him, saying Oliver is a “big supporter of animal welfare.”

“They do seem to be protesting against somebody who is trying to help the situation,” he said. “It’s a slightly odd place for them to be protesting but nonetheless they are welcome to do that. My main concern was that they would get cold. In the programme we never said that the British pig farming industry is completely whiter than white, we did a very balanced programme.”

His reference to “getting cold” refers to the naked, pregnant mothers who were caged outside his Fifteen Restaurant, meant to mimic conditions pigs often endure on animal farms.

Is there any truth to Oliver’s spokesperson’s statements? Could it be that PETA bares down too hard at times in their quest to make everyone vegetarian that they compromise efforts of those who at least are trying to improve some parts of the meat industry? Is it unrealistic to expect everyone to go completely veg and should activists spend equal efforts ensuring those animals that will eventually be eaten be treated as humanely as possible before and killed without pain?

Kareena Kapoor Playing Love ‘Em, Veg ‘Em, And Leave ‘Em?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, March 19th, 2009 in Actresses, Bollywood.

We already told you how Ingrid Newkirk of PETA said vegetarians and vegans should date omnivores to bring them over the their side and then dump them to move on and convert someone else.

We even joked that Natalie Portman might be doing this to Rob Pattinson.

But it looks like Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor really follows the rule.

Kareena became vegetarian while dating fellow Bollywood star Shahid Kapoor, but the two later broke up. Kareena and Shahid are still both veg, though, and Shahid even put his dog on a vegetarian diet.

Now, Kareena is involved with a guy who is, in her words, “hard core non-vegetarian, who at every given step would be eating his steak and his roast chicken.” But that’s not affecting her eating habits. From the Times of India:

“I did it completely because I believed in it. It’s because of a book I read and I completely believe in. Nobody has put a dagger to my head. I’ve learnt something from Shahid and that’s something that Saif appreciates and in fact Saif always tells me that “Listen, if now you go back to being a non vegetarian, I’ll loose faith in you as a person.” I’ve traveled the word with Saif and he’s sat across thousands of tables from me and I’ve stuck to my French fries even though I have to put on a kilo on my scale, but I would not go for the roast chicken.”

So Kareena came around on her own. But it looks like her past loves played a role. Will Kareena bring her new man over to the veg side? And will the poor soul be left behind once he gives up his steak and roast chicken?

Stephen Colbert Gives Attention To Schmeat: It’s Test Tube Meat!

Stephen Colbert recently did a show featuring test tube meat, or as some would call it, Schmeat.

PETA’s President and Co-Founder Ingrid Newkirk has a couple of cameos.

PETA is currently offering $1 million dollars to the first team of scientists that can develop a method to produce viable, commercially available, lab-grown chicken meat by 2010.

Colbert also features Dr.Vladimir Mironov, a scientist who claims to have the knowledge and technology to produce test tube, or in vitro meat.

“Schmeat,” as Dr. Mironov calls it, is a “combinatinon of sh*t and meat.” But isn’t that what regular meat is already composed of?

Of course, Colbert is full of his usual sarcasm, especially considering he’s such a big fan science.

He love astrology, claiming it’s extremely helpful when hiring employees because, as of now, it’s still legal to discriminate against Virgos.

Bethenny Frankel Ordered To Stop Sending Vegan Cupcakes

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, March 19th, 2009 in Chefs, Food & Drink, Reality TV.

The Real Housewives Of New York City Season 2 Premiere Party

New York Magazine recently did a recap of a Real Housewives of New York City episode, a reality TV show on the Bravo network featuring healthy foods chef Bethenny Frankel.

In a classic Siskel & Roeper deal, each housewife got the thumbs up or down, but Bethenny won columnists Chris Rovzar and Jessica Pressler over.

Her vegan baking didn’t, though.

“Bethenny suffered through everyone’s dating advice (“Why does everyone think I’m like Shrek or something?”), behaved through her drinks date with LuAnn, and amazingly, did not visibly dry heave when Alex told her she met Simon when she was trolling online for sex. She was matter-of-fact about her fellow housewives’ shortcomings (“I think that Ramona’s a little competitive with LuAnn”) and kind in that she didn’t reveal the reasons for her non-feelings for the guy from STK on-camera. (We’ll say it for her: He’s not hot enough. There.) Plus, her eye makeup was really well applied. So Bethenny, you won this round. Please don’t send us any more vegan cupcakes, though.

Aw, come on guys. Who doesn’t love a vegan cupcake?

Bethenny’s company, Bethenny Bakes, offers a wide variety of egg and dairy free goodies. Not to mention she’s promoted veggie dips with Pepperidge Farm for the Super Bowl and made videos demonstrating tofu with eggless spread and open faced Boca Burger sandwiches with pesto.

Who Would You: LaToya Or Michael Jackson

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 18th, 2009 in Female Singers, Male Singers, Polls/Surveys, Who Would You.

Michael Jackson is making headlines after the announcement of his comeback tour in London recently. Although he’s having some trouble getting outside insurance, his promoters just might do it for him, since he’s so healthy and vegetarian and all.

La Toya had it rough on Big Brother trying to get something to eat and although she is normally vegetarian, was eating sea kitten and turkey on the show.

So between the Jackson siblings, who would you rather do…

Tiger Woods Wanted Naked For His Stripes

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 18th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Athletes-Games-Sports.

Tavistock Cup Day 2

PETA wants Tiger Woods to do a hole in one wearing none.

Actually, they’ll settle for him stripping down to the essentials to stand up for tigers and other animals in circuses.

They’re hoping he’ll ditch the traditional polo shirt and club for some stripes painted on his body and a sign educating people about the abuse that animals endure.

An excerpt from the letter to the golfer:

“We’re writing to you today with an interesting request. As one of the most successful and celebrated golfers in history, we believe that you could use both your influence and your distinctive first name to help bring attention to the suffering of tigers and other wild animals who are abused in circuses. Would you consider having your body painted to resemble a tiger and then sit in a cage to protest the cruel treatment of tigers, elephants, bears, and other wild animals in circuses? Not only are these animals beaten, shocked, and whipped to make them perform tricks that are confusing and meaningless to them, they are also caged or chained for up to 95 percent of their miserable lives.”

Tiger would make a nice male addition to the heavily female advertisements ran by the group, but somehow, with his clean-cut image, we find it hard to image him doing the stripe-tease.

Propagandhi Band Cooks Up Sandor Katz For Humane Meat

Propagandhi on Myspace

Propagandhi has always been an outspoken band on various political issues, including vegetarianism.

All of its members are vegan and their latest album, Supporting Caste, features a song, “Human(e) Meat (The Flensing of Sandor Katz),” which mocks the idea of animals being treated kindly during rearing, only to be slaughtered for food eventually.

“Humane (e) Meat” features cooking up foodie and author Sandor Katz, who evidentally the band isn’t too fond of.

Going to Katz’s website and searching “meat” you get the result, “meat.org” with the words “meat industry, wish vegetarians didn’t own.” The meat.org site is PETA’s site displaying what goes on in factory farms.

“That’s someone cutting bread and some fake screaming over it, for a laugh,” says Kowalski  [in regards to “Humane (e) Meat.”]. “[Sandor Katz] wrote a book and [Propagandhi co-founder Chris Hannah] read it. It makes light of the idea of humanely killing animals, and so we kind of just removed the animal, put him in place for satirical reasons, just to show that clearly this isn’t humane.”

Some sample lyrics from “Humane (e) Meat”:

I swear I did my best to ensure that
His final moments were swift and free from fear
But consideration should be made for the fact
That Sandor Katz was my first kill

Every single hair from his body
Gently placed his decapitated head in a stock pot
Boiled off his flesh and made a spreadable head cheese

Because I believe that one can only relate with
Another living creature by completely destroying it
I’m sure Sandor’s friends and family would appreciate this

Emily Deschanel Screams Ed Begley’s Name When Lights Go Out

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 18th, 2009 in Actresses, Environment-Eco-Green.

2009 Vanity Fair Oscar Party Hosted By Graydon Carter - Arrivals

Doesn’t the title make this story sound hot? Emily Deschanel screaming “Ed Begley” in the dark? It’s only in the name of being eco-friendly, though. Sorry to disappoint those looking for something more titillating.

The vegan star of Fox’s “Bones” recently did an interview with Health where she revealed environmentalist Ed Begley, Jr. played a key role in inspiring her to go green. She says his name aloud if she forgets to turn the lights off in her home.

“If I leave a light on in my house, which I try not to do, I always say, “Ed Begley, you gotta turn it off.” If I don’t turn it off, my assistant or boyfriend will say, “Ed Begley!””

Emily has been a great proselytizer for the veg life, getting her co-star David Boreanaz to do vegetarian for one day of the week. She even got the recently removed Chairman of Fox, Peter Ligouri, to go vegan, which she considers her proudest green achievement.

“We were at a party, and I said, ‘You’d make a big difference by just trying it for a week.’ I sent him food, and he really stuck to it.”

When asked if she was an ideal eater, Deschanel replied, “Oh my god, I’m not a perfect eater by any means, and I don’t believe in starving yourself. I believe in eating healthfully and being balanced—and being balanced in your mind as well as in your body”

Visit Health to read the entire interview with Emily.
