Newsweek’s David Noonan Likes Annoying Non-Vegans

Senior Editor at Newsweek, David Noon, was inspired to embark on a 28-day vegan diet by the book, The Engine 2 Diet.

You know some say that once you go vegan you never go back to meatan, and that’s exactly what happened with Noonan.  Two months later, he’s still going vegan strong and has lost 12 pounds. Not to mention he’s marveling in the fact he gets to annoy the non-vegans.

From a recent article in Newsweek:

“Much to my surprise, more than two months later I am still a vegan. I am also 12 pounds lighter and I have substantially more energy than I did when I was a flesh eater. (That’s the term I use now to describe people who eat meat; annoying non-vegans, I have found, is one of the best things about being a vegan.)”

While David is having a blast making fun of the flesh-eaters, he’s still struggling with some old cravings, like pizza.

“How easy it would be to go out for a couple of slices of pizza right now. Only I feel so much healthier today than I did just a few weeks ago. I haven’t had my cholesterol checked since the fall (it was 209), but I’m confident that it has dropped significantly because, as Esselstyn’s book amply documents, that’s what happens when you become a plant eater. So I’m sticking with the program. I’ll skip the pizza and have a big salad or one of those damn PBJs for lunch instead. And tonight I’ll have some roasted vegetables and maybe a beer (a plant-based beverage, thank you very much). And tomorrow I’ll be older, but I still won’t be fat.”

Of course, once David does some more investigative journalism into vegan foods, we’re sure he’ll discover all the awesome vegan substitutes for the things he’s missing-like making a homemade pizza with cheese made from cashews and almond milk.

Britain’s Got Talent Amanda Holden: Low Fat Food Has No Talent!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, March 17th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink, TV Hosts.

Childrens Champions 2009

Who said vegetarians eat lettuce, sprouts, and plain tofu all day?

British actress Amanda Holden became famous for her role as Sarah Trevanion on “Wild at Heart” and is a judge on Britain’s Got Talent.

“I’m vegetarian, but I love my food,” she told the UK Times Online.

“I don’t believe in having low-fat spread in the fridge, and I do indulge in a pudding, and I do like a bit of Stilton when I’m having posh dinners out.”

Her guilty pleasures include “butter” and “wine” but we’re not sure if she necessarily puts those together.

Luckily, she is a natural outdoors gal who would rather jog with her dog than stay cooped up in an artificial gym setting. This exercise routine seems to be working for her, as she ran the London Marathon last year.

American Idol Finalist Anoop Desai Had Vegetarian Past

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, March 17th, 2009 in Male Singers, Not So Vegetarian.

American Idol Top 13 Party

What is it with all these folks coming over to America and ditching their veggie ways?

First, we were saddened to learn that Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi slowly started to eat “bologna” and “pepperoni pizza” as a teenager, then progressed to full blown Hardee’s Bacon Western Thickburger spokseperson.

Now, we learn a finalist on this season’s “American Idol”, Anoop Desai, was “raised by family of vegetarian immigrants,” but assimilated himself to become a “typical American kid who eats typical American food.”

Uh-oh. And you know what “typical” is.

One of his family members said, “But he has a lot of discipline, and though he enjoys food greatly, we have never seen him overeat.”

Desai was a lucky man after being asked to come back to the show on a “wildcard” in a previously unannounced 13th spot.

Maybe if he wins, he’ll get back into the club with Kellie Pickler, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, and the off the wagon, trying to get back on it Ruben Studdard.

Larry Sullivan on Myspace

See what happens when you follow us on Twitter. We write a post about you.

We’re just tickled pick that actor Larry Sullivan reads us. And even more tickled that we found out about him.

Sullivan, who Tweets @larrysullivan, is a vegetarian who’s had roles on “24,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” (wonder if he shared a veggie snack with Jorja Fox) “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” to name a few.

According to Vegan.com, after seeing one of PETA’s Kentucky Fried Cruelty’s billboards, he went on the Internet to do his research and realized he couldn’t possibly not be a vegetarian.

“Hours later, I was still at the computer crying like a baby realizing what I had been a part of for so long. I made the decision right then that I was going vegetarian. The timing was perfect. What better New Year’s Resolution than that! So New Year’s Day 2006 was the day my life (and the lives of many animals) changed for the better!”

Awesome Larry! Congrats for being in the exclusive Hollywood veggie club.

Rise Against Throws Down Gauntlet Against Canada’s Seal Hunt

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, March 16th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Bands.

image_riseagainstThe all vegetarian band Rise Against is offering a prize to its fans in exchange for a little animal activism.

In protest of Canada’s annual seal slaughter, the band is asking people to gather signatures for the petition to stop the hunts.

For each city they’re playing on their summer tour in Canada with Rancid, the fan with the most signatures will win the package of free tickets to the show as well as a meet and greet with the band.

According to PETA, over 200,000 seals were slaughtered last year.

The organization is continuing to keep the heat on Canada even beyond the band’s tour, hoping to put the spotlight on the country as the 2010 Winter Olympics nears.

“The international outcry against Canada’s shameful seal slaughter grows louder every year, and now Rise Against have added their powerful voice to the chorus,” says Peta2 Assistant Director Dan Shannon. “If Canada wants to clean up its world image for the Olympics, the first thing it should do is call off the massacre.”

The Face On Your Plate Outlines Truth About Animals As Food

When you tell some people you’re a vegetarian, they often reply with the snide remark, “See those teeth. Those are incisors. That means we were meant to eat meat.”

But in his book The Face on Your Plate, author Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson debunks that myth, along with other reasons  that are used to rationalize meat eating.

We’re not that unique from animals, he says, as we share as much as 95% DNA with many of them.

Not to mention the devastating effects raising animals for food has on the planet and animal suffering just isn’t acceptable.

Then there are the diseases associated with a meat based diet.

B vitamins? Those come in supplements.

Masson grew  up with two vegetarian parents and flip flopped from vegetarian to meat eating, but is now a vegan.

He’s written several other books on the emotional lives of animals from pets like cats and dogs to farm animals.

Bob Barker Still Hooking Up With Ladies-For Animal Rights

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, March 16th, 2009 in Actresses, Animal Issues, TV Hosts.

The 34th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards - Press Room

Bob Barker is one heck of a vegetarian, who can pair up with the likes of hot chicks.

Just this weekend, he hooked up with Pamela Anderson, according to Your Daily Vegan.

Okay, okay, so it was for the sake of animal rights. And it just so happened to be they both attended the same event. But hey, how do we really know what went on at the after party…

Both animal lovers attended the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida’s 20th Anniversary Gala in Ft Lauderdale this past weekend and have had quite actives roles in animal issues.

Barker recently donated a million dollars to help create an Animal Law Program at the University of Virginia. He was also famous for reminding everyone to spay and neuter their pets at the end of every “The Price Is Right” show he hosted.

Pamela’s latest activist adventure is writing a letter to Florida’s governor Charlie Crist, in protest of road-side zoos maintained in the state.

Shown below is Pammie at the event with her new boyfriend, Jamie Padgett.

AEG On Michael Jackson: We’ll Insure Him, He’s Vegetarian!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, March 16th, 2009 in Male Singers.

Michael Jackson Announces Plans For Summer Residency At The O2 Arena

Michael Jackson may claim he “still has what it takes” to take on multiple dates for his new comeback tour, but he’s having a hard time finding insurance companies to believe that.

According to Business Insider, promoter AEG has so far only been able to find someone to insure the first 10 dates of his tour. If other insurers aren’t found, AEG will be forced to insure the rest of Jacko’s dates between July and February.

Not that they’re worried. After all,  he’s vegetarian.

“The insurance brokers sent doctors and they spend five hours with him, taking blood tests. He’s a vegetarian, he’s in great shape,” Chief Executive Randy Phillips said.

“We would be prepared to self-insure to make up the dates. It’s a risk we’re willing to take to bring the King of Pop to his fans.”

Some have even advocated lowering health insurance premiums to vegetarians, since they’re at less risk for so many diseases often associated with a meat diet.

Yeah, if Michael continues to take care of himself on tour, which includes popping the veggie sandwiches backstage, AEG or whoever decides to insure him should be claim-free sailing.

Just stay away from pyrotechnics, MJ.
