Portia de Rossi’s “Better Off Ted” Featuring Test Tube Meat

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, March 16th, 2009 in Actresses.

Portia de Rossi makes an appearance at a special screening for Dr. Wayne W. Dyers Ambition To Meaning: Finding Your Lifes Purpose

Portia de Rossi is set to star in a new ABC drama called Better Off Ted about a research & development company, Veridian Dynamics, without scruples.

Much of their ideas are generated just to see “what will happen” or “what is possible” including cryonically freezing an employee.

A people freeze? Yikes! Sounds too much like a Zach Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) stunt from Saved By The Bell.

But there is an idea that gets generated at Veridian that’s ethical, test tube meat, and of course dear vegan Portia is totally turned on by it.

“Since I have been a vegan, I have been researching all kinds of ways animals are used in foods, and I see those big warehouses and wonder about what goes on inside,” de Rossi told Buffalo News. “It’s not too far from reality. There are huge corporations that manufacture food and makeup and nuclear weapons.”

It may not be that far from reality.

PETA announced last year it would award a million dollars to the “first person to come up with a method to produce commercially viable quantities of in vitro meat at competitive prices by 2012.”

Entrepreneurs and scientists, get ready, set go!

“Better Off Ted,” premiers this Wednesday on ABC.

Heather Mills Buys Big Fish Cafe, Turns It Vegan!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, March 16th, 2009 in Business, Food & Drink, Models, Restaurants.

Heather Mills works on her new vegan restaurant

The long awaited Heather Mills’ food line may have just arrived.

Paul McCartney’s ex wife has purchased a popular fish restaurant near her home in East Sussex, Big Fish Cafe, and is turning it into a vegan restaurant.

The eatery is thought to be the first in a worldwide chain she has talked about starting for some time.

Heather had dined at Big Fish Cafe in the past with daughter Beatrice, and even while she was still married to Paul, where they would have veggie breakfasts with soya milk tea, according to former owner Nick Short.

Short claims Mills bought the place for less than what was originally agreed, which was blamed on the current credit crunch.

“I have been well and truly worked over by Heather,” he told the UK Daily Mail.

One more sour flavor to add to the tartar sauce: Heather doesn’t have plans to hire the two full time and four part time staff, so Short was forced to lay them off.

Kudos to Heather for getting her vegan restaurant off the ground. But we have to say, in this economy, couldn’t she have shown some veggie love and kept the workers already there. After all, what better way to spread the veg news than to teach an old cook some new vegan tricks?

“It’s funny when you get diagnosed with cancer and you’re a raw food vegan — for 10 years! You think they’re lying to you, or they got your chart mixed up. You’re like, ‘Get out of here!’ You’re not shocked. It’s not like you’re devastated. You don’t buckle. I didn’t. I know people who did. I was just really surprised. I thought someone was playing a bit of a practical joke on me because I’m a joker.”

—-Juno Award winning, Canadian singer-songwriter Bif Naked, who has been undergoing treatment for an aggressive form of breast cancer. But don’t let that fool you into thinking she’s been bedridden. Her 6th studio album, The Promise, is set to be released in May.

Dana Goldberg Confirms Vegan Lesbian Stereotype

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, March 14th, 2009 in Comedians.

Dana Goldberg

Dana Goldberg

With an introductory line in her bio that reads, “Raised by a wild pack of Jews, otherwise known as her mother and siblings, Dana Goldberg is a force of nature on stage,” you can see why Dana Goldberg is on the fast track to becoming one of the most famous comedians in the nation.

She made the cover of CURVE, the nation’s #1 selling Lesbian magazine, which has featured famous lesbians (AND VEGETARIANS!) K.D. Lang and Ellen DeGeneres in the past.

She’ll readily debunk the stereotypes about lesbians while acknowledging ones that are true-at least for herself. From Local-IQ.com:

“I also think a lot of people assume all lesbians are big, butch women wearing flannel and Crocs. Granted some of them do, but not all of us. I got rid of my flannel years ago!”

“I know a lot of people also think all lesbians play softball, work at Home Depot, get tickets every time Melissa Etheridge comes to town even though we’ve seen her 15 times, drive trucks and SUVs, have cats, only eat organic food, were once Vegans at some point in our lives and drink excessive amounts of beer. Okay all that’s true, I got nothin’.”

She loves vegetarian burritos and occasionally, sopapillas, but not too often.

“I don’t want my flannel shirts to get too snug,” she  joked.

Missy Higgins: They Think Fried Chicken Is Vegetarian

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, March 14th, 2009 in Female Musicians, Female Singers, Food & Drink.

Missy Higgins

If you live in the US, traveling to some other countries can be a pain when it comes to finding good vegetarian food.

But, hey, who are the Americans to brag? There are still some places in the States where if you say, “Tofu,” they think you’re hurling an insult at them.

Singer-songwriter and musician Missy Higgins keeps her veganism while on tour, but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy to do, as she explained in the Minneapolis StarTribune.

Although the Australian born lady thinks the best thing about the US are its open minded people, one of the worst things is finding food in smaller towns.

“Their idea of vegetarian is fried chicken,” she said.

Poor thing!

Meat’s Not Green Says Various Musical Artists

Meat’s not green and these bands are giving the shout out to let everyone know.

Rise Against, Sierra, Cisco and Swayze, Trivium, Evergreen Terrace, Sky Eats Airplane, TAT, Charlotte Sometimes, Pierce the Veil, Say Anything, Ludo, and Dr. Manhattan all want people to try not to eat meat (or as much of it) because so many resources are wasted getting the animal from the farm to the plate.

51st Annual Grammy Awards - Show

Country music singer Carrie Underwood said she sometimes gets booed for saying she’s a vegetarian in some parts of the country. Now she’s getting booed for being an animal lover.

As we reported earlier, Carrie’s voice can be heard singing Motley Crue’s “Home Sweet Home” during each American Idol contestant’s elimination this year. Some of the profits from her version of “Home Sweet Home” available on iTunes will go towards the Humane Society of the United States.

And that just makes the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance want to poop (pun intended).

“Carrie Underwood has decided to use her talents to benefit an organization dedicated to destroying the rights of thousands of her fans,” said Rick Story, vice president of the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, in a news release. “HSUS does not operate or oversee animal shelters; it is a radical organization that seeks to end hunting and other responsible uses of animals in America.”

The Alliance is urging hunters to contact Fox and demand they not play Carrie’s song.

Wow. Talk about “radical.”

Trying to censor an artist who wants to benefit an organization that works to protect so many animals by speaking out against puppy mills to protecting farm animals sounds more radical. Trying to censor an artist just because she donates to a charity that doesn’t work in favor of your interest is radical.

It’s highly unlikely Fox will drop their Idol alumnus. And it’s highly likely the added publicity will improves sales of “Home Sweet Home.”
