Project Runway’s Tim Gunn: Maybe Not Human Hair, Definitely Not Fur

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, December 26th, 2008 in Fashion, Fur, TV Hosts.

67th Annual George Foster Peabody Awards

On Bravo TV’s Project Runway, designers are not permitted to use fur in any of their collections. A contestant from Season 4 circumvented this by using human hair. Not exactly what fashion consultant Tim Gunn was advocating, but at least the human survives the ordeal of having its fur removed.

With so many cruelty-free clothing lines out there, it’s becoming easier to make responsible decisions regarding the wardrobe.

It’s also easier to forget there’s still work to be done in the mainstream fashion industry, where fur, leather, and other animal products are used regularly. It isn’t enough to shun these designers by not purchasing their products. The ultimate goal is to convince the entire fashion industry to eliminate these materials altogether.

And that’s where Tim Gunn steps in. A mainstream television personality with a show that’s religiously followed by fashionistas everywhere, he’s recently teamed up with PETA to record a video urging designers who currently use fur to stop.

“Any designer in the fashion industry who does not want to watch the PETA video and see exactly what happens to animals and how they’re treated and how the product that they use comes to the marketplace I believe is egregiously irresponsible,” Gunn said. “It is critically important that we all be educated about these matters and then make choices.”

You can view Tim Gunn’s video, as well as watch a Q & A session with him over at PETA’s blog.

Emily Deschanel Frequently Heard Pigs Being Slaughtered

Ellen DeGeneres And Portia de Rossi Host Yes! On Prop 2 Party

Yes, most of us dropped a tiny tear at the news of Bambi’s mother dying, but other than that, unless you grew up vegetarian or on a farm or ever worked in a meat market, you were probably shielded from the horrors of learning how the food on your plate got there.

In contrast, when “Bones” actress Emily Deschanel was growing up, she heard pigs slaughtered regularly.

“I was about 10 years old on an island and they killed the pigs right behind where we lived. And you could hear them screaming. That was a pretty terrible thing to hear when I was so young. And that just kind of sort of started [me] thinking, ‘How can people treat another animal that way and if we can live without doing that then why wouldn’t we live that way?'”

Sarah Palin To PETA: Don’t Be Throwing Snowballs At Me!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, December 25th, 2008 in Politicians.

Vice Presidential Candidate, Governor Sarah Palin, spoke to a huge crowd at the Henderson Pavilion in Henderson, Nevada

Don’t make her call Joe the Plumber!

Remember that Holiday Snowball Throwing game we told you about where you could pelt fur wearing folks for points?

PETA, the organization who created  the game, received a phone call a couple of days ago from someone claiming to be from Governor Palin’s office. The caller demanded PETA take the game down or face a lawsuit.

Governor Palin, an avid hunter and a foe to many animal rights supporters, is just one of the several celebrities making a guest appearance, including fur wearing Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

PETA blogged about this incident and used the opportunity to further poke fun at Palin:

“In real life, the moose and other animals Ms. Palin blows to smithereens don’t stand a chance. But, hey, our game is virtual and nonviolent. To be honest, I’m not quite sure why Sarah is so mad about the game anyways. Wielding a gun and decked out in a sexy bikini and pageant ribbon, I’d think she’d be quite proud of how PETA’s portrayed her.”

No, no, no, you just don’t understand, PETA. If you had thrown snowballs at her from airplanes, then she would be proud. But don’t take their word for it. Have a look. Sexy? Yay or Nay?

After a consult with PETA’s legal team, it was determined the game is “protected parody” or “fair game” (no pun intended) and the game is here to stay.

Premiere Of

Shortly after the Madonna-Guy Ritchie split, we learned that Madge set forth some pretty strict rules about what the children could and could not do while visiting Guy, including only eating organic, vegetarian, macrobiotic food.

Now Guy is paying her back, but it might be the children who are suffering in the process.

As part of the deal for getting to crash at Guy’s UK mansion he previously banned her from, she must behave-no temper tantrums or bullying the staff. Fair enough. But she also must allow the children to eat a “traditional” Christmas dinner of ham and turkey!

For a parent who’s been insisting on organic, vegetarian food, this has to be her worst nightmare. Not to mention the possible physical reactions that might happen to the children when eating greasy pig and bird after months of eating wholesome, organic vegetarian food.

Not to worry, though. Madonna is already planning her next move. As soon as she arrived in the UK, a source said the first thing she did was met with her divorce lawyer.

It’s probably safe to say this Christmas dinner deal will be annulled by next year.

Rise and shine all you who got up early to look for Santa this morning.

Can’t believe this pretty boy face is retiring from the big screen! Joaquin Phoenix stars in a Christmas video for PETA UK. The holiday jingle played in the background is bright and cheery as he passes the produce, but soon takes a very different tune in the turkey section.

Have a merry and meatless Christmas!

Russell Simmons: Spirituality Drives Diet And Business

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, December 24th, 2008 in Authors, Business.

2nd Annual Sunflower Children Texas Hold'em

Every morning Russell Simmons lights a candle and sits still for 30 minutes as part of his daily meditation routine. That’s only a dream for those of us who don’t know the meaning of “time out.” Luckily, for him, he’s learned that spiritual business is equally important as the financial.

His spiritual practices are what led him to the vegan diet and lifestyle he’s maintained for almost a decade.

“My motivation for eliminating animal products from my diet was [the Hindu and Buddhist practice] ahimsa, or non-violence,” he told Tracey Pepper, free-lance writer for Vegetarian Times. “If you really want to live a happy life, cut the animal products from your diet.” Simmons is featured in the January 2009 issue of the magazine.

As the co-founder of Def Jam Recordings, the parent recording company to famous hip-hop acts such as Nas and LL Cool J for you old school folks, creator of his own clothing line, Phat Farm, and the author of a best selling motivational book, Do You! 12 Laws To Access the Power in You to Achieve Happiness and Success, he’s certainly reaped large financial rewards, even if he hasn’t been doing it all for the money.

“I never chase money. I used to think that money was part of the reward, but they can’t pay you enough to make you feel good about something you don’t really enjoy. I’ve found that the more I enjoy giving something that’s lasting and promoting happiness, the more lasting happiness I have. It’s always evolving and there’s always going to be some amount of suffering, but I’ve found my business through giving what I think it good.”

Read the rest of Russell’s interview with Vegetarian Times in the January ’09 issue on the stands now to learn what direction he’d like to see hip-hop take in the future.
