Alicia Silverstone Shares Favorite Eco-Friendly Fall Items

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, November 9th, 2010 in Actresses, Environment-Eco-Green, Fashion.

Alicia Silverstone is guest blogging at VegNews, and she’s sharing some of her favorite veg and eco-friendly items for fall.

“I’ve seen some great, eco-friendly pieces this season! I love when mainstream companies that are not vegan at all come out with kind products—progress. And if we all support their kinder products, they’ll be more inclined to stop using leather and other nasty materials.”

Some of Silverstone’s faves are completely vegan, while she’s encouraging other companies to expand their cruelty-free selection by giving their more ethical products more exposure.

One piece you may find tucked in her closet (if she’s not currently wearing it), is the Cowl neck tunic w/thumb hole sleeve by Eco Skin that is 92% hemp and 8% spandex. And if you like the tunic below, you’ll love the company’s green initiatives.

An ABC special recently highlighted the growing popularity of part time veganism, which has been attributed to author and New York Times contributor Mark Bittman with his “Vegan before 6,” approach.

The clip features Reggie Bass, who lost 40 pounds going on a raw vegan diet, and now has a business that sells prepared vegan foods.

“I would like to see people eat 100 percent raw vegan, but I don’t think it’s realistic at all. But I think that if people were even 80 percent raw and 20 percent,” says Bass in the video.

Scenes from interviews with Bittman and associate publisher of VegNews magazine Colleen Holland are also included.

“I made this rule for myself which was — okay I’m going to be a vegan, a really strict vegan until six at night, or until I eat dinner. And I’m going to eat whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables, that’s it until 6 p.m.,” said Bittman.

“Everyone may have their opinions, I think for most people we know the world isn’t going vegan tomorrow. We know that would be the best thing for the planet, the best thing for the animals and it would be the best thing for human health, but this may be the first step in going towards that,” said Holland.

Ginnifer Goodwin "VegNews"

Ginnifer Goodwin is on the cover of the May/June 2010 issue of VegNews Magazine.

The magazine has titled this issue the “Big Love” one, and not just because of the actress’ hit HBO television series. There is also a section on vegan weddings!

Goodwin discussed the factors that led her to become vegetarian and her work with the Humane Society of the United States as well as that controversial cover shoot for W magazine where she wore leather.

“I had written the magazine, my publicist had talked to the magazine, and there was not going to be a way for me to do that cover without wearing the clothes they needed modeled, which of course made me uncomfortable because I was clad in all leather. I would never do a fashion campaign selling leather. I would never accept money to model leather.”

Goodwin took a lot of criticism from the vegan community for agreeing to do the shoot, which she says, “really did break my heart.”

“I took solace in Rory Freedman, a new friend a the time, who made me feel a lot better about the decision to have taken the cover over not having taken it as an opportunity to talk about the issues.”

23rd Annual Genesis Awards - Press Room

Has 10 years of incredible vegetarian progress passed already?

VegNews has compiled their list of top veg stories of the decade and some incredible gains have been made.

Remember when you found out McDonald’s had beef oil in its french fries?

Yeah, they paid for that.

What’s even more exciting is that one of television’s most popular and hilarious hosts, Ellen DeGeneres, along with her partner Portia de Rossi went vegan.

From VegNews:

“After hinting at her new cruelty-free lifestyle at a Prop. 2 fundraiser, comedienne and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres officially announced her commitment to veganism at the 2009 Genesis Awards. In the months to follow, DeGeneres hasn’t wasted any time sharing her cruelty-free lifestyle with viewers—around 3 million of them—with vegan guest chefs, factory farming coverage, a veg lunchtime blog, and an entire section of her website dedicated to living the veg life.”

Let’s not forget that sexy Wayne Pacelle was also named CEO of the Humane Society. His efforts to protect animals and his good looks won him a spot on the Most Eligible Bachelor of D.C. list.

Heather Mills VegNews “Person Of The Year”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 23rd, 2009 in Business, Food & Drink.

Heather Mills leaves 'This Morning' TV Studios after a cooking demo - London

Heather Mills has been named “Person of the Year” by the readers of VegNews magazine.

Heather’s been a busy person, giving her time to the animals and the planet through both charitable and profitable actions.

Heather gave 2009 a little momentum when she started working with Hunts Point Alliance charity and donated over a million dollars of vegan food to impoverished families in the Bronx in 2008.

Continuing to work with the charity in 2009, Heather gave vegan cooking demonstration to the same families.

Then, Heather turned restaurateur, buying and renovating an old fish cafe and turning it into a vegan restaurant, V Bites.

Between managing V Bites and working with Hunts Point, Heather found time to participate in local food festivals and teach how easy it is to cook with veg food.

She acquired Redwood WholeFood Company, a maker of vegetarian cold products, including faux meats and cheeses and launched an eco-friendly clothing line made from recycled materials.

And she still finds time to raise a child who’s already started her activism career.

Great year, Heather.

Here’s to an even greater 2010!

Ellen DeGeneres Favorite Vegetarian Celebrity VegNews Poll

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 16th, 2009 in TV Hosts.

36th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards

The annual VegNews Veggie Awards winners will be announced in the November/December holiday issue of the magazine coming out any day now.

Green gossip website Ecorazzi.com was able to get a sneak peek at this year’s winners and Ellen DeGeneres was chosen as favorite vegetarian celebrity by VegNews readers.

Ecorazzi’s take:

“We called this one back in June in our Top 5 Vegan Celebrities of 2009 — which was odd, because the year was only half-over and it would have been pretty embarrassing if she’d started taking diet tips from Hillary Swank.”

Will Ellen celebrate the award with a bellyful of her favorite vegan tacos?

View some of the other winners at Ecorazzi.com and find out which categories Twitter founder Biz Stone and actress/author Alicia Silverstone won.

The Official Teen Choice Awards Pre-Party

The March/April 2009 issue of VegNews features an article titled, “20 Under 30,” about young activists who are the faces of vegetarianism.

Nicole Lapin, CNN news anchor, made the cut!

The 24 year old has a program in which she too recognizes young people who are making a difference in the world, “Young People Who Rock,” which highlights “talented, motivated, don’t-take-no-for-an-answer leaders in politics, business, entertainment, and social activism.”

Nicole’s a vegan, but don’t let that fool you into thinking she’s high maintenance. She once mentioned how easy it is to make meals out of vegan items, and that she could eat anywhere, including a steak house or a gas station.

Congrats to Nicole for making the cut. For the list of other notable young activists, including two awesome bloggers from Supervegan.com, pick up a copy of VegNews.
