Daphne Oz

Daphne Oz

Daphne Oz, author of The Dorm Room Diet, and daughter of the famous daytime television host and heart surgeon Dr. Oz, has accumulated a wealth of information from her father, holistic nutrition adviser grandmother and vegetarian mother over the years. Daphne took her knowledge and wrote a book aimed to teach people how to fuel their bodies with food that gives energy, fights disease, and is healthier for the planet. The Dorm Room Diet contains an entire chapter especially dedicated to thinking about the impact of food on the environment, in addition to a chapter filled with vegetarian recipes.

Throughout the book, you remind readers of the benefits of being vegetarian (discuss how you get your nutrients without meat, pitfalls of meat protein, only vegetarian recipes in the book) without actually telling people to go veg. Was this done on purpose as a way to promote a vegetarian lifestyle without being preachy or did it naturally fall into place?
It naturally fell into place, partly because I have no idea how to cook meat, and partly because it’s a lot easier to purchase, store and cook vegetarian dishes when living in the dorm room. I’m glad you saw it as a natural way to promote the vegetarian lifestyle, and introduce readers to flavors, textures, and substitutes they might never have considered before, because that was certainly a goal of ours throughout the chapter. So often, knowledge and a little nudge is all people need to change old habits.

What’s your favorite recipe from the book and why?
My favorite recipe is the Nuttier Butter, just because it’s so easy and versatile–I would spread it on whole grain toast for breakfast, eat a spoonful before working out for a powerful shot of protein, fiber and energy, and even used it as the base for a spicy thai peanut salad dressing for dinner sometimes. Plus, it’s such a cool variation on the average peanut butter that adds omega fats and fiber.

The Dorm Room Diet sounds like it’s aimed at college students. How can a regular, working adult benefit from some of the advice in the book?
The advice in the book is really targeted at anyone looking to break free of the deprivation of fad diets and establish a permanent, healthy lifestyle that puts you in total control. The tips and tricks are targeted at anyone short on time, space, and/or money who still wants to make an effort to establish healthy habits to last a lifetime, so it’s equally helpful to people spending their time in a dorm room or a cubicle!

Alicia Silverstone and her husband keep vegetarian in the entire family–including the couple’s dogs!

Silverstone recently took to her blog, The Kind Life, to discuss the dogs’ meatless diets and share her recommendations for canine food.

She feeds her pups the Canine Health Line from Dr. Harvey’s brand of dog food. Canine Health Line offers a mix of human grade organic grains, vegetables and herbs with absolutely no animal products. It functions as sort of a doggie “Hamburger Helper,” as you add your own protein to the mix, such as lentils, and cook it.

Silverstone recommends about adding extra supplements to the mix, though.

Laura Linney had the privilege of working with vegan actress Alicia Silverstone during the run of the play Time Stands Still. The old saying that a vegan rubs off on everyone must be true, because Linney revealed in the August 2010 print edition of Prevention magazine that Silverstone and her vegan cookbook, The Kind Diet, have changed her eating patterns.

“I love Alicia – she had an enormous influence on me. I burst with pride over her book [The Kind Diet]. And she said, “You don’t have to be one thing or the other, just figure out what’s best for you.” I had been so rigid in my thinking about if I was going to be a vegetarian, if I was going to be a vegan. I don’t have to put that pressure on myself. I”m just trying to learn what the best diet is for me.”

PETA is kicking off the annual World’s Sexiest Vegetarian contest and funny former bedwetter Sarah Silverman has some stiff competition, competing against the likes of women like Alicia Silverstone, Lea Michele and Erykah Badu.

Who doesn’t love a woman who can throw humor into a poignant story that involved slaughtering animals, which ultimately caused her to give them up?

From her book, The Bedwetter, Silverman writes on the experience of watching a turkey being killed on a neighbor’s farm:

“Without realizing it, I had sentenced that turkey to death, and while maybe this sort of thing gave fat British monarchs a rush, to me it was horrifying.”

North Shore Animal League America Celebrates The Tour For Life

John Bartlett, named Designer of the Year by The American Apparel and Footwear Association, has announced he’s gone vegan, and will no longer use leather in his collections.

Although he has been known in the fashion community for his use of leather, starting in September, those pieces will be discontinued and he will look for non-leather alternatives to use in his designs.

On his blog, Barlett, explained the decision came after reading Alicia Silverstone’s vegan diet and lifestyle book, “The Kind Diet.”

“I had recently read Alicia Silverstone’s great book “The Kind Diet” and started to come to terms with the impact of meat eating on myself, on the animals who are being “factory farmed” and on the environment.”
