Riding the bus is already an eco-friendly way to get around, but hip hop business star Russell Simmons has proposed one more way for Washington, D.C. bus riders to help the environment and animals.

A series of ads are being displayed on the district’s buses featuring Simmons and his vegan message.

Several celebrities have partaken in a funny PSA for Farm Sanctuary’s What Did You Do? campaign meant to raise awareness on the cruelty of factory farming and teach consumers how they can make a difference.

Russell Simmons, Shannon Elizabeth, Fred Willard and Ashlan Gorse play enthusiastic PR folks in a conference who are trying to pitch their ideas to help people understand just how much life on some of these farms suck for animals.

“I get that you don’t want to shock people but the reality is shocking,” Simmons says.

Some suggested ideas to get the shocking point across include “Celebrity Pictionary,” that illustrates how chickens get their beaks cut off. However, that idea is deemed “over the top.”

Russell Simmons has teamed up with another entrepreneur to open a food factory and chain of food stores in neighborhoods that don’t normally have access to healthy food.

Simmons and Hajj Hasaun Muhammad hope to expand the business to several areas around Brooklyn, including Brownsville and Central Harlem.

As for the nature of the food to be offered, Simmons said, “We want cool, fun vegetarian stuf.”

February is Black History Month and a great time to not only celebrate civil rights, but highlight the dozens of black community leaders, celebrities and other famous persons who either follow or have followed a diet and promote animal rights as well.

The Reverend Al Sharpton, who once weighed over 300 pounds, found following a mostly vegetarian diet helped him lose over 100 pounds.
