The Humane Society International, a division of the Humane Society of the United States,  has assembled a plan to respond to animals affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

A team of veterinarian experts are expected to enter the Port au Prince area in the next 48 hours.

Representing the HSI will be both the HSUS and the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association.

Both groups are partnering with a group in the Dominican Republic, Veterinary Care & Humane Services, Caribbean Project (VCHS).

An update from the HSUS website:

“Our HSI/HSUS/HSVMA field responders include a French-speaking veterinarian and a paramedic trained in disaster response and animal handling. They will be accompanied by two veterinary technicians from VCHS and a translator. The team will provide immediate animal care as it can, and also assess conditions for animals in the capitol city and surrounding areas. As circumstances permit, our experts will also advise emergency and relief workers on extra steps they might take in the coming days to alleviate the suffering of animals while the desperate work to help the island’s human population continues.”

Kathy Freston Celebrates Her New Book 'Quantum Wellness'

Author Kathy Freston interviewed Dr. Michael Greger of the Humane Society of the United States to get his thoughts on the possible connection between recent outbreaks of the flu virus and factory farmed meat.

According to Dr. Greger, the first hybrid mutant strain of swine flu was found in a factory farm in North Carolina, where hundreds of pregnant sows were crammed together in crates.

Dr. Greger believes these conditions provide the environment necessary for viruses to emerge.

But does touching or eating meat actually increase your risk of contracting the virus?

“There are certainly lots of viruses people can pick up from handling fresh meat… There have been a number of cases of human influenza linked to the consumption of poultry products, but it’s not clear whether swine flu viruses get into the meat. Regardless, the primary risk is not in the meat, but how meat is produced. Once a new disease is spawned from factory farm conditions it may be able spread person to person, and at that point animals–live or dead–may be out of the picture.”

But in the end, it probably pays to go veg anyway.

“We’ve known for 20 years that the immune function of those eating vegetarian may be superior to those eating meat. First published in 1989, researchers at the German Cancer Research Center found that although vegetarians had the same number of disease-fighting white blood cells compared to meat eaters, the immune cells of vegetarians were twice as effective in destroying their targets–not only cancer cells, but virus-infected cells as well. So a more plant-based diet may protect both now and in the future against animal-borne diseases like pandemic influenza.”

Oprah Winfrey, Michael Vick Make Animal History

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, December 30th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Athletes-Games-Sports, TV Hosts.

Wayne Pacelle, CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, has blogged on what he feels were the biggest stories of the decade relating to animal welfare.

Sadly, some of the most newsworthy stories aren’t necessarily good ones, like the Michael Vick dog fighting incidents uncovered in 2007.

However, there were plenty of celebrities looking out for the animals in the past decade and Oprah Winfrey‘s been awarded her set of wings for featuring an episode of her show that criticized puppy mills.

“Since the broadcasts, we’ve rescued thousands of animals from puppy mills,” writes Pacelle. “Just this year, 10 states have approved legislation to impose tougher standards on large scale dog breeding operations, and the new standards have prompted a number of deficient puppy mills to shut down. And a raft of protests has cause pet stores to close or at least to stop selling puppies from mills.”

And O even featured some four legged stars on the cover of her magazine after visiting PAWS, Chicago’s largest no-kill animal shelter.

Let’s hope the next decade is filled with more trendsetters like Oprah and less of the history one would rather forget.

After the victory of preventing downer cattle from entering the food supply, the Humane Society of the United States would like to extend this rule to pigs as well.

Nicole Lapin, CNN anchor reports: “Not only cruel, but the Humane Society says it’s also dangerous to our health to have so-called downers enter into our food supply.”

Perhaps everyone should follow Lapin’s lead and go veg, excluding pigs and all animals from their diets.

The National Pork Producers Association insists proper precautions are already being made to ensure diseased pig product isn’t delivered to the consumer, but Dr. Michael Greger of the HSUS has a different opinion.

Bill Maher IHOP Cage Free Egg Plea–Humane Society PSA (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, December 3rd, 2009 in Animal Issues, Comedians, TV Hosts, Videos.

Bill Maher has collaborated with the Humane Society of the United States to record a PSA informing consumers that International House of Pancakes, IHOP,  continues to get eggs from suppliers that confine hens in battery cages.

It’s so cruel that Bill has nicknamed IHOP “International House of Pain.”

“You may come hungry to IHOP, but you shouldn’t leave happy,” Bill says.

“Not as long as they only use eggs from hens crammed into tiny cages, where they can barely move an inch.”

Maher points out that other restaurants like Denny’s and Burger King are using some cage free eggs, but IHOP has failed to make progress.

Sounds like IHOP needs to HOP on the progressive bandwagon and phase out this cruel method of obtaining eggs.

Watch the clip for more.
