Pink No Non-Drinking Vegetarian: Enjoys Aussie VB Beer

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, June 14th, 2009 in Female Singers, Food & Drink.

Pink Plays Perth

Ingrid Newkirk once said she hated people thinking being vegan meant being a “pure” vegetarian and not drinking or going to church every week.

Singer Pink’s not vegan, but she’s proving vegetarians can have a cold one at the end of the day.

While on tour recently in Australia, she told a reporter that while she prefers to eat vegetarian meals, she kept her concert cooler stocked with VB, Victoria Bitter beer.

Victoria Bitter hasn’t been investigated by the veg friendly alcohol folks at Barnivore.com, so we’re not sure if it’s vegan approved or not. Anyone care to tell?

Update: Victoria Bitter NOT vegetarian or vegan. See comments!

Russell Simmons Calls Out Barack Obama On Burger Joint Visits

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, June 13th, 2009 in Business, Food & Drink, Politicians, Videos.

Oh yeah, Russell. Tell it like it is!

Barack Obama has been making a habit of visiting burger joints with the public watching. There was the Ray’s Hell Burger outing (yes, burgers are hell for many involved) with vice president Joe Biden. And the Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries visit with NBC journalist Brian Williams.

We called Obama out, and now Russell Simmons is putting in his two cents in a politico.com video.

Russell suggests Obama get something healthier like a falafel.

Watch the video to hear Russell chastise Obama. Our favorite quote? “He’s young,” Russell said, referring to Obama needing to learn to make better choices. LOL! The elders are telling you to each your veggies, Barack.

Rhett Miller Has Super Vegetarian Friends Lisa Loeb, Dan Piraro

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, June 12th, 2009 in Male Musicians, Male Singers.

2008 Voodoo Experience - Day 2

Ah, Rhett Miller is such a slacker.

The Old 97s singer was suppose to serve as guest editor for Magnetmagazine.com, but instead let his other famous musician, actor, and artist friends do the job!

But Rhett does have a couple of friends that interest us, particularly, cartoonist Dan Piraro and singer Lisa Loeb.

Piraro is a vegan who often incorporates veg and animal rights themes into his comedy and sketches at bizarro.com. Piraro can’t wait for the newest album by the Airborne Toxic Event.

Lisa Loeb is vegetarian-sorta. Although most sources say she is, she admitted she likes bacon every once in awhile.

Lisa’s a fan of Peanut Butter & Co. “Smooth Operator” creamy peanut butter. The company makes other entertaining flavors like “White Chocolate Wonderful” and “The Heat is On.” The nut butters are no-stir, natural, and contain no trans fat or cholesterol.

You can learn what else Rhett’s super veg friends recommend on the Piraro and Loeb pages.

Who knows? Maybe they’ll recommend Rhett go veg too. Or at least almost there, as in Lisa’s case.

For you Rhett and Old 97 fans, Rhett’s self titled solo album is out this week.

Charlize Theron Fights Pet Breedism

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, June 12th, 2009 in Actresses, Animal Issues.

The Simon Wiesenthal Centers Annual National Tribute Dinner

Singer-songwriter Nellie McKay told us last month during our interview with her that people need to forget the breeds and go for the mutts!

Charlize Theron agrees!

The actress recently donned a “Fight Breedism” T-shirt while walking along the beach with a cute, celebrity mutt alongside her.

Theron was modeling a new T-Shirt available through PETA, which can be purchased online.

The shirt educates as well as makes a fashion statement, including facts like 8 million cats and dogs taken to animal shelters, but less than half are ever adopted.

We don’t have to go into details about what happens to the ones that aren’t adopted, do we?

Get your shirt and spread the word that buying animals really does kill them.

Sir Paul McCartney And Heather Mills - Divorce Judgement

Heather Mills and Jamie Oliver tried to put on a vegan cooking show.

It was terrible!

Things got out of hand and people started throwing eggs at BNP leader Nick Griffin.

“Ms. McCartney-Mills was also caught in the volley of eggs. Once the right-to-lifers had dispersed, a group of men, rumoured to be from fathers-4-justice, began to whip her into an omelette; a recipe they had found in one of Jamie Oliver’s previously published books.”

That had to have made Heather mad, since you know eggs aren’t vegan!

Michelle Obama And Carla Bruni-Sarkozy: Furless First Ladies

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, June 12th, 2009 in Fur, Politicians.

2009 NATO Summit

France’s First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy recently came out of the fur closet and revealed she doesn’t wear fur, and although she may have worn it back in her old modeling days, any fur that’s on her bod now is fake.

“I do not wear, buy or own fur,” wrote France’s first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, in a letter obtained by G2, to Dan Mathews, senior vice president for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals U.S. “Every designer who kindly lends me clothes for public appearances can tell you that I do not accept to wear fur pieces, even when they’re only a small part of the outfit.”

Not to be one upped, U.S. First Lady, Michelle Obama, recently made a statement echoing Bruni-Sarkozy’s style. It was shorter, but still got the point across.

“Mrs. Obama does not wear fur,” Michelle’s deputy press secretary Semonti Mustaphi confirmed.

Now that’s a policy that doesn’t need debating!

Kathy Freston Shatters Meat Myth: Our Hands Weren’t Capable

Kathy Freston Celebrates Her New Book Quantum Wellness

We’ve all probably had that jerk friend who, after learning we’re vegetarian, makes a remark like, “See these teeth. These are canines. They’re meant to cut meat.”

Author Kathy Freston has blogged at the Huffington Post and cites several authoritative sources that give wonderful explanations why our friends are full of baloney-literally!

It’s all in the hands, as Kathy explains early humans would not have been able to handle ripping an animal apart for dinner. Our pretty fingers were just too delicate.

“…Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine President Dr. Neal Barnard says in his book, The Power of Your Plate, in which he explains that “early humans had diets very much like other great apes, which is to say a largely plant-based diet, drawing on foods we can pick with our hands”

“There is no more authoritative source on anthropological issues than paleontologist Dr. Richard Leakey, who explains what anyone who has taken an introductory physiology course might have discerned intuitively–that humans are herbivores. Leakey notes that “[y]ou can’t tear flesh by hand, you can’t tear hide by hand…. We wouldn’t have been able to deal with food source that required those large canines” (although we have teeth that are called “canines,” they bear little resemblance to the canines of carnivores).”

“We don’t have sharp claws to seize and hold down prey. And most of us (hopefully) lack the instinct that would drive us to chase and then kill animals and devour their raw carcasses. Dr. Milton Mills builds on these points and offers dozens more in his essay, “A Comparative Anatomy of Eating.””

If you know anyone with sharp claws, you probably should make up an excuse to get out of the relationship. Read Kathy’s entire blog at the HuffingtonPost.com.

Byron Bay Bluesfest 2009 - Day 5

Some fans got together and did a remix of Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours,” from his album, We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things.

Everything’s cool and all except the fact that it’s filmed at MCDONALD’S and features people ordering all SORTS OF NASTY MEAT DISHES!

Of course, raw vegan Jason is cool about it and let’s people know on his Myspace blog, that while he’s not down with McDonald’s, he’s down with people having fun with his song.

“I’ve seen a lot of covers and heard a lot of parodies of “I’m Yours,” but this one is super sized. While I don’t advocate that brand of fast food, I dig what these talented people are doing by taking their art into the real world, being joyous and unafraid to shine their light in random acts, enrolling others in their wonderful state of play. This is life you guys. This is it. There ain’t no dress rehearsal. Order what you want.”

Seriously, people need to make an “I’m Yours,” remix at a vegan restaurant.

Watch the video for yourself.
