Facebook Employees’ Cafeteria Options–Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten-Free

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 1st, 2010 in Business, Food & Drink, Tech.

PALO ALTO, CA - AUGUST 18: Facebook employees write on the Facebook 'wall' following a news conference at Facebook headquarters August 18, 2010 in Palo Alto, California. Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the launch of Facebook Places, a new application that allows Facebook users to document places they have visited. Like other successful tech companies, Facebook provides its employees with deliciously good food perks. Josef Desimone, a former chef at Google, leads the food operations and says because he makes people so happy at work, he’s like “Santa Claus with knives.”

That sounds creepy, but after learning about the vegetarian, vegan and sustainable choices Mark Zuckerberg‘s subordinates get for free (yes, that’s three meals a day), we’ve come to the conclusion that knife-wielding Santa gives good little vegs all they ask for year round.

Employees may start the day with vegan breakfast waffles.

"The Tofu Tollbooth"

"The Tofu Tollbooth"

Dar Williams is a singer-songwriter who collaborated with Elizabeth Zipern to create a one stop book filled with dining suggestions for the vegetarian traveler, The Tofu Tollbooth. The concept is great, plus the book stays true to being environmentally friendly as it’s printed with soy ink on recyclable paper.

“It’s a directory of natural food stores,” Williams told Windy City Times. “So, that’s the link; because I’m a traveler. And, actually, I’m a terrible cook. I mean, a really bad cook. So, it would be kind of funny if people ( laughs ) thought it was a cookbook. They probably imagine me in an Indian print skirt over a pot of lentils. I am so the grab-and-go kind of bad eater.”

Mario Batali’s Eataly Butcher (Of Vegetables)–Jennifer Rubell

Like most grocery stores, Mario Batali‘s latest food enterprise, Eataly, features a butcher in the 50,000 square feet empire. However, Jennifer Rubell, a graduate of both Harvard University and Culinary Institute of America, is so good at cutting she doesn’t leave behind any blood. It doesn’t help that her victims are vegetables, though.

When asked by New York Magazine what a vegetable butcher does, Batali replied, “If you’re not familiar with how to trim an artichoke, we’ll trim you an artichoke. If you don’t think you have time to peel your baby carrots, you can leave them with us and go shop in the other parts of the store, and we’ll peel them. We’ll do anything but cook them. On your way out, we’ll put the peels in a little separate bag—because they’re going to weigh them at the checkout counter—and then they go into a compost can up front.”

MindBodyGreen conducted an interview with this plant killer to learn more about her skills.

Paula Deen Vegetable Brand Coming Soon

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 29th, 2010 in Business, Chefs, Food & Drink, Videos.

Paula Deen is working on her own line of produce. Amazingly, from current reports, the line doesn’t include vegetables wrapped in bacon, dipped in butter and doubled fried.

According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Deen is working with both farmers and food producers and hopes to have the brand out next year and describes it as a “dream solution for young mothers” because of the quality of the food.

The southern food celebrity chef is using her 4-year old grandson Jack as the guinea pig, and Deen says he is fanatical about the broccoli.

If you won’t eat her broccoli, maybe at least the family cat will.

Restaurant aren’t always on target when naming dishes after celebrities. Some can’t spell Carrie Underwood’s name correctly or remember that she doesn’t eat meat. Something tells us Natalie Portman wouldn’t eat her own lobster salad at a New York eatery. But finally, a family owned restaurant in the midwest has gotten it right with the Vegetarian Pamela Anderson sandwich.

Tortas Guicho Dominguez y el Cubanito in Indianapolis, Indiana (that’s quite a mouthful to blurt out where to eat when you’re hungry) has a sandwich on the menu fit for the sex symbol actress to consume, containing green bell peppers, mozzarella, and mushrooms.
