Ricky Gervais

Three British stars are backing a campaign against all forms of hunting as a sport.

Ricky Gervais, Morrissey and Johnny Marr support the League Against Cruel Sports. The league is involved in bringing attention to a variety of hunting involving animals, including bullfighting, dog fighting, greyhound racing and the snaring of animals like foxes and rabbits.

The league is often involved with investigating illegal hunts, campaigning on the legislative level and running sanctuaries designed to protect wildlife in heavily hunted areas.

“Animals are not around just for people to abuse and kill in the name of so-called entertainment and sport, Gervais said. “It’s beyond belief that it actually happens and that certain deluded people get enjoyment from it. I support the League and its campaigns to try and stop cruel sports.”

Jonathan Krisel, Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen

In a first ever for the IFC, Portlandia, a comedy-sketch series that pokes fun of the left, has been renewed for a second season before season 1 has wrapped up.

Portlandia stars Saturday Night Live veteran Fred Armisen and his co-star, Carrie Brownstein, as they portray various characters that parody all things liberal. During the first episode, Armisen and Brownstein play a couple dining at a restaurant that professes to serve humane food that comes complete with a file on all the animals used for food,  including their photos. Not willing to take the waitress’ word, the couple pays a visit to the farm where the chickens are raised. This farm happens to be ran by a cult consisting of one man who happens to love multiple women, but makes room to enjoy his “Peter” (Armisen) on occasion too.

Bruce Friedrich, Vice President for Policy with PETA, has criticized the U.S. government for not allowing U.S. Nationals to take their animal companions with them as they fled the turmoil-stricken area, likening it to the Hurricane Katrina rescue efforts in the United States that forced people to choose between risking their own lives or staying behind to protect their animals.

Volunteers at the Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals (ESMA) have been caring for the dozens of cats and dogs that have flooded the shelter since the protests began.

“I want everyone to join me in saying a big ‘no’ to milk from mega-dairies. Why should people put up with factory milk from battery cows when we’ve already proven we don’t want eggs from battery hens? It’s hardly the milk of human kindness. We can do better than this, so please go to www.notinmycuppa.com and tell the supermarkets how you feel about this today’.”

Chrissie Hynde, on a proposal to bring Nocton Dairies, a mega-dairy farm to Britain. The facility would house several thousand cows in indoor sheds and require each animal to produce 10,000 liters of milk each year, some sources cite as being as much as 43% higher than the national average. Cows subjected to produce large volumes of milk like that is expected at a large farms are more likely to experience medical issues, such as mastitis, an infection in the cow’s udder.

Guy Fieri

Guy Fieri grew up in a vegetarian, macrobiotic home that drove him nuts.

He told People his parents cooked, “vegetarian, nondairy, whole grains, no red meat. I started cooking when I was 10 because I just couldn’t eat that stuff.”

Luckily, he’s not so turned off by vegetarian food he can still whip up something meatless and delicious. At least for his own family.

Guy said the Morgan’s Vegetarian Patty Sliders are, “named after my sister Morgan, who is a vegetarian. I created them for her.”

Olivia Munn

Guys, if you’re going to take Olivia Munn out for Valentine’s Day, you better not show up in a horse and buggy.

When asked by PETA what her perfect idea for a V-Day date was, Munn answered: “The least romantic thing to do in New York or any other city is going on horse-drawn carriage rides. … [I]f you knew the pain and misery these beautiful animals endure just to fulfill the false symbol of uniting two hearts, it would actually break your heart. To see the horses in the harsh, cold weather being forced to cart people around the city is the farthest thing from romantic in my opinion.”
