Johnny Marr is not the first celebrity to comment on how great Portland is for vegetarians.

The former Smiths singer said the city is so “overtly vegan,” and that’s one of the reasons why he’s spent so much time there.

“We were of that generation that came after punk and post-punk. People don’t talk about it now, but it was non-macho. If you were an alternative musician, you were political, because of the times [Thatcherism and the Falklands war]. It was taken for granted that the bands you shared a stage with had the same politics. I’m not sure you could say that now.”

Morrissey Offered Vegetarian Coachella Festival For The Smiths

Morrissey

Morrissey said he’d consider consuming his genitals before getting back with The Smiths’ band member Johnny Marr for a reunion.

“I’d rather eat my own testicles than reform The Smiths – and that’s saying something coming from a vegetarian,” the Meat is Murder singer said.

Now Morrissey has an even better offer that would allow him to avoid eating flesh, stay vegetarian and turn the entire Coachella event in Indio, California meatless too.

The latest in the other than human living kingdom to be paired with a celebrity name is a crustacean named Gnathia marleyi, named after the late Bob Marley.

“I named this species, which is truly a natural wonder, after Marley because of my respect and admiration for Marley’s music,” Paul Sikkel, an assistant professor of marine ecology at Arkansas State University, said in a statement.

Three British stars are backing a campaign against all forms of hunting as a sport.

Ricky Gervais, Morrissey and Johnny Marr support the League Against Cruel Sports. The league is involved in bringing attention to a variety of hunting involving animals, including bullfighting, dog fighting, greyhound racing and the snaring of animals like foxes and rabbits.

The league is often involved with investigating illegal hunts, campaigning on the legislative level and running sanctuaries designed to protect wildlife in heavily hunted areas.

“Animals are not around just for people to abuse and kill in the name of so-called entertainment and sport, Gervais said. “It’s beyond belief that it actually happens and that certain deluded people get enjoyment from it. I support the League and its campaigns to try and stop cruel sports.”

“I am very proud of the fact that 20 years on people tell me they became a vegetarian as a result of ‘Meat is Murder. I think that is quite literally rock music changing someone’s life – it’s certainly changing the life of animals. It is one of the things I am most proud of. I think it was quirky to call the album ‘Meat is Murder’ and it was way ahead of its time, but we were on a label that let us do that kind of thing.”

Johnny Marr may have sang along to “Meat is Murder” when he played with The Smiths and he still follows a vegan diet today. However, his plant counterpart has no problem trapping innocents bugs and gulping them down. Guess everyone has an evil twin.

The Cribs Add Johnny Marr Over Vegetarian Barbecue

Isle Of Wight Festival 2008 - Day 2

The story of boy meets band is always exciting to hear, and according to the Boston Herald, ex Smith’s musician Johnny Marr met with the other members of The Cribs over a vegetarian barbecue in Portland, Oregon.

“At first it was a little weird,” Gary Jarman, bassist and singer of The Cribs said. “I couldn’t figure out who this guy was. Why was another Englishman there? Then the penny dropped. It was Johnny Marr! He said how much of a fan of the band he was. That would have been enough for me because he was such an influence.”

Hopefully Jarman hadn’t drank a lot of soda at the barbecue, causing him to belch when Johnny extended his hand.

Johnny has been officially playing with brothers Gary, Ryan and Ross since 2008
