“It’s the same thing, animals are like children, they look to us for protection. We should protect them. I really feel quite smug about mad cow disease and foot and mouth and so forth, and I just think ‘Well, what do you expect’? People have been saying it for years.”

Morrissey,  in another statement that makes him famous for his outspokenness, comparing eating meat and child abuse. A 10-day music festival in Belgium has taken meat off the menu for the day Morrissey performs, and the “Meat is Murder” singer also recently asked a venue in Perth to do the same. Morrissey has been known to walk off the stage during a show because the smell of meat disgusted him.

Three British stars are backing a campaign against all forms of hunting as a sport.

Ricky Gervais, Morrissey and Johnny Marr support the League Against Cruel Sports. The league is involved in bringing attention to a variety of hunting involving animals, including bullfighting, dog fighting, greyhound racing and the snaring of animals like foxes and rabbits.

The league is often involved with investigating illegal hunts, campaigning on the legislative level and running sanctuaries designed to protect wildlife in heavily hunted areas.

“Animals are not around just for people to abuse and kill in the name of so-called entertainment and sport, Gervais said. “It’s beyond belief that it actually happens and that certain deluded people get enjoyment from it. I support the League and its campaigns to try and stop cruel sports.”

Worst Vegetarian News Stories Of 2010

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, December 31st, 2010 in Animal Issues, Food & Drink, Fur, Not So Vegetarian.

Lady Gaga

We gave you the best vegetarian news stories of 2010. But a lot of anti-veg events made headlines too. Here’s the best of the worst.

10. Johnny Weir ruffles fur feathers during the winter Olympics. It’s bad enough he picks a costume with rabbit fur around the collar. After being criticized, he’s says he’ll “wear fur again” and it’s all just a part of creative expression. Someone hit the ice with his head one time too many while practicing the double-dunce-klutz.

9. Sarah Palin kills caribou on TLC reality show, “Sarah Palin’s Alaska.” Someone who feeds her family potentially lead contaminated meat shouldn’t be criticizing Mrs. Obama’s initiatives to make school lunches healthier. In 2008, she gave an interview while Tom turkey got his head chopped off. In 2010, it’s Rudolph. Easter Bunny, dude, watch your back!

8. Angelina Jolie says secret beauty tip is steak. This is coming from an ex-vegan actress who was too lazy to do her research and learn to eat vegan properly, so she failed, went back to meat, and praised it for giving her that sexy “Salt” look. Would love to see what her heart looks like from all the salt in processed meats.

7. KT Tunstall is vegetarian–except for pig’s blood. Sure, some vegans will cheat and eat grandma’s butter cookies at Christmas. But KT Tunstall discussed in detail how scrumptious black pudding, a congealed “treat” made from pig’s blood, was even though she normally eats tofu and beans. “Suddenly we see” Twilight vegetarian vampire taking a whole new meaning.

Morrissey Sparks Criticism Over Racial Chinese As Subspecies Comment

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, September 3rd, 2010 in Animal Issues, Male Singers.

Morrissey has sparked controversy again, this time being accused of making racially inappropriate statements describing Chinese treatment of animals in circuses and zoos.

During an interview with Simon Armitage, Morrissey said, “Did you see the thing on the news about their treatment of animals and animal welfare? Absolutely horrific. You can’t help but feel that the Chinese are a subspecies.”

A spokesperson for Love Music Hate Racism called Morrissey’s statements “just crude racism” and wants the singer to rescind his comments.

“When you start using language like ‘subspecies’, you are entering into dark and murky water,” Martin Smith from Love Music said.

Morrissey Chimes In On Queen’s Guards Wearing Real Bear Fur Hats

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, August 2nd, 2010 in Animal Issues, Fur, Male Singers.

Morrissey wrote a letter to the UK Times praising Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe for unveiling footage of an undercover investigation of black bear baiting and hunting  and denouncing the practice of killing Canadian bears to use their fur to line the hats worn by the Queen’s Guards.

“Sir, I welcome Ann Widdecombe’s views on the depravity of bear-baiting in order to serve the vanities of the British Army Guards (Opinion, July 30). In the humanised world, of course, hats are not worth killing for. Yes, animal rights move different people differently, and there are even those who think that animals simply have no right to be, but there is no sanity in making life difficult on purpose for the Canadian brown bear, especially for Guards hats that look absurd in the first place, and which can easily be replaced by faux versions (thanks to the visionary Stella McCartney) with no death involved.”
