Patrick Swayze Death: Can Diet Prevent Pancreas Cancer?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 in Actors, Food & Drink, Research + Science.

Patrick Swayze Remembered

The so called “summer of death” is getting sadder and sadder as we’ve lost another great celebrity, Patrick Swayze.

Swayze died from pancreatic cancer, but didn’t go without a good fight, even participating in the fundraiser, Stand Up 2 Cancer.

There’s no one way to prevent any disease, but some studies have linked meat fat to pancreatic cancer and a plant based diet to preventing it.

Here are some results from recent studies discussed at hattiesburgamerican.com:

  • According to a new study, fat from red meat and dairy products significantly increases the risk of pancreatic cancer.
  • Researchers analyzed the diets of more than 525,000 participants to determine whether there is an association between dietary fat and pancreatic cancer.
  • The study found no association between plant-food fat and pancreatic cancer.
  • Fruits, vegetables and other low-fat vegetarian foods could actually prevent pancreatic cancer, according to other studies.
  • One study found that consuming foods rich in flavonoids – apples, grapefruit, broccoli and berries – may decrease pancreatic cancer risk by up to 59 percent.

We hope research continues to advance one day discover how to prevent and cure this deadly disease.

Our thoughts go out to Patrick’s family and friends.

Audrey Kitching Likes It Raw

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Merchandise, Models.

Katy Perry Presented By SoundsofBuzz.com And Coca Cola

We can’t stop posting about Audrey Kitching cause she can’t stop posting all her daily adventures in veg land.

The latest is her Facebook status, which describes how she feels on the juice.

“Raw veggie juice is so hard to drink. BUT detox is such a good feeling.. ugh.”

Whether your raw juice goes down smoothly or not, if you’re going to juice, you gotta have the right equipment.

Which is great that some folks decided to list the best of the best in juicers at consumersearch.com.

Yep, it’s nice to sit back and let someone else do the hard work.

There are juicers for citrus, vegetables, and even wheatgrass in case the cat is into raw juice too.

Ha. Just kidding wheatgrass juice lovers.

With prices from $20 to $300, there’s a juicer that won’t rub your budget raw.

Much Music

Much Music

The evening at Tryst in Toronto went well, the event being a fundraiser for the animal rights group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Much Music VJ Sarah Taylor was there at the door checking people for cruel clothing like Pamela Anderson stripped potential passengers in the Cruelty Doesn’t Fly ad.

“I’m vegan. This is a cause I really believe in,” Taylor said. “I’m all about cruelty-free products.”

She was asked if she was trying to be the next Pamela Anderson.

“Looking down at my chest, I’d say no,” she replied.

Ah, boobs.

They’re not important.

What matters is that you never possess any chicken breasts.

Go Sarah!

President Obama Addresses Ohio Auto Workers On Economy

You heard the horrible story of how Kanye West grabbed the mic from Taylor Swift‘s hand and totally stole the spotlight while she was giving her acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.

Everybody’s got their opinion, including president Barack Obama.

After calling Kanye a “jackass,” Obama realizes his statement is going to be all over Twitter in 24 hours, and he jokingly says this act will bring similar scrutiny like his fly swatting incident that PETA drew attention to.

Obama’s not the only one who thinks Kanye’s a jerk. His fur loving ways have gotten him in trouble with other people.

Listen to the clip below cause there’s nothing more hilarious than the pres calling someone a donkey.

Did Jenny McCarthy Influence Jim Carrey’s Swine Flu Comment

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 in Actors, Animal Issues, Couples, Food & Drink.

**RESTRICTIONS APPLY** Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy at the snowy photocall for A Christmas Carol in Cannes

A few months ago, we posted a comment Jim Carrey made about swine flu and pigs at the MTV Movie Awards.

“There wouldn’t be a swine flu if we treated the pigs better!”

Shortly after, we received a comment on the post from a “Meat McSausage,” mocking our theories.

“No. Who ever wrote this is a braying jackass. He said it as a joke. He could probably give a flying f*ck about pigs living conditions. And even if he did he wouldnt take it upon himself to say that during a speech at an awards show. Idiots”

While we pride ourselves on diversity at the Veg Star, we definitely don’t have any jackasses on staff.

Jenny McCarthy has recently announced she’s vegan.

Could Jenny’s diet change have been prompted by animal welfare reasons, especially after learning about the factory farmed conditions pigs are kept in?

And could Jim, who might not necessarily be vegetarian, also be thinking about where the food on his plate comes from and the ethics of eating.

Suddenly, we’re not sounding  like braying idiots after all.

Jenny and Jim got married, by the way.

Maybe a meatless union is in store for the happy newlyweds.

Daryl Hannah Grows Bigger Vegetarian Balls Than Al Gore

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 in Actresses, Environment-Eco-Green, Food & Drink.

Daryl Hannah & Hilary Shepard Promote The Game Liebrary

Daryl Hannah recently spoke at the Project Green Summit that benefited the Texas Trees Foundation and the North Texas Clean Air Coalition.

Hannah, a longtime vegetarian and unlike Al Gore, is not afraid to bring up the subject of not eating meat to protect the planet.

Oooh. Did we just bust on Al Gore?

“The meat industry puts out more carbon emissions than the transportation industry,” Hannah said. “Even giving up meat for a weekend, helps.”

Hannah warned against getting off the hook with carbon offsets and offered ways people could green their life directly.

“It is less important to offset and more important to ask the question: Do I need so much stuff? We need re-evaluate our lifestyles…for our own health and our kids’ future. And we’ll save money in the long run. ”

Hannah added that you should “get the poisons out of your house,” and ensure your cleaning and cosmetic products are environmentally friendly and biodegradable.

Being a good looking environmentalist has its perks.

Daryl said that when she was recently arrested for protesting, cops asked to have their pictures taken with her.

Hope she made them promise to recycle and give up meat one day of the week.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Athletes-Games-Sports, Videos.

As you know by now, Michael Vick and the Humane Society of the United States have teamed up, for better or worse.

Vick has been making public appearances, talking about the cruel decisions he made to partake in dog fighting and trying to convince teens and youth not to follow the same path.

“At some point, I got sidetracked,” Vick said. “I started listening to my friends and doing some things that were not ethical and not right.”

Vick, who spent 18 months in federal prison for his involvement with dog fighting encourages these high school students to speak up if they know animal cruelty is taking place.

Watch the clip above to hear Vick speak to teens at Nueva Esperanza Academy in North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Women In Power Event Featuring Natalie Merchant And Veg Food

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 in Events, Food & Drink.

Gala Launch For TV Ads To Defeat Bush

This weekend was Omega‘s annual Women In Power Conference, which featured feminist and girrl powered names like Gloria Steinem and Natalie Merchant.

According to one attendee of the event, there was plenty of vegetarian food to keep empowered women satisfied.

“The food (vegetarian and totally yummy).”

What better way to promote the theme of empowerment than to empower animals by not eating them.

Reminds us of a quote that ties women’s rights to animal rights by vegetarian author Alice Walker.

“The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for whites or women for men.”
