2014 was a great year for vegetarian news. Here’s a look at the top stories Vegetarian Star feels were the most worthy.

#5. TODAY Hosts Do Real Vs. Faux Meat Taste Test. Al Roker, Matt Lauer and the crew agreed even a meat lover would enjoy digging their teeth in some of the faux cold cuts featured.

#4. The Year Of The Cat. Host of the popular Animal Planet series My Cat From Hell Jackson Galaxy did an exclusive interview with the President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States Wayne Pacelle. Galaxy and Pacelle gave cats four paws up as they discussed cats in the news and the potential impact these animals can have on the lives of millions of pet owners.

#3. Vegan Chef Wins Cutthroat Kitchen. Vegans and vegetarians often get roasted (pun intended) on reality cooking shows. But  Louisville vegan chef Kristina Addington beat her competitors in the series where opponents spend money to sabotage the competition. It pays to be nice. It doesn’t hurt to be vegan either.

Do most Americans trust a vegan on the grill?

We sure hope so!

A segment on the TODAY show had the hosts discussing a new poll that found most Americans would rather have Bill Clinton in charge of their backyard grilling BBQ parties than any other president.

Clinton beat out former presidents Ronald Reagan and current POTUS Barack Obama.

“TODAY” Hosts Do Real V. Fake Meat Test With Beyond Meat (Video)

Mark Bittman visited the set of Today to discuss his popular flexitarian eating plan, “vegan before six,” as well as showcase a few of his favorite vegan recipes.

As you may have guessed from the name, “vegan before six,” is not about eliminating every animal product from your diet, but eating plant-based for every meal except dinner and snacks after that.

“Today” Investigates AKC Breeders (Video)

The Today Show recently featured a segment on AKC breeders and how the seal of the organization’s approval doesn’t necessarily equivalate to an animal bred in healthy conditions.

Animal welfare groups such as American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Humane Society of the United States claim some of these certified breeders are actually raising dogs that are sick, diseased, malnurished and living in filthy conditions.

Wayne Pacelle, CEO of the HSUS says that a breeder’s certification from the AKC is nothing more than a “piece of paper without any value for dog welfare.”

Martha Stewart visited Today to demonstrate a few recipes from her latest cookbook.

Meatless: More Than 200 of the Very Best Vegetarian Recipes is Stewart’s completely vegetarian cookbook.

Stewart briefly mentioned the benefits of a vegetarian diet, including lower risks for several health problems.

She then proceed to prepare Grilled Asparagus and Ricotta Pizza, Linguine with Toasted Almonds, Parsely and Lemon and Avocado, Beet and Orange Salad.
