Farm Sanctuary Gala 2004

“It was because of my wife. I was a guy who was compassionate to animals but not particularly involved in anything. I never wanted to be a vegetarian – I always thought vegetarians were hippies with too much free time. And then when I met my now wife and we started dating, she just opened my eyes to factory farming and a lot of stuff I’d never heard of.”

—-Cartoonist Dan Piraro, in an interview with Ecorazzi, on how he got involved with animal rights. Piraro’s works, which humorously portray vegetarian and animal rights issues, can be found on his website, Bizarro.com. He also blogs.

Chrissie Hynde And McDonald’s: She’s Not Lovin’ It!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, February 18th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Female Musicians, Female Singers.

McDonalds-PETA

Perhaps one of the most vocal celebrity activist, singer Chrissie Hynde, joined in a protest against McDonald’s this week as part of PETA’s relaunching of their McCruelty campaign.

It’s been almost a decade since PETA spoke with McDonald’s, the fast food establishment that promised to treat its chickens better before slaughter. Since nothing has changed, PETA is going after them again.

Unlike modern methods of killing, which involved giving chickens a gas to put them to sleep, McDonald’s still slaughters chickens while being conscious and able to feel pain.

Chrissie held up her “McCruelty: I’m Hatin’ It” sign while PETA’s vice president Dan Matthew held her up.

“What happens if you fall and [hurt] yourself?” a security guard asked.

“Then I won’t be able to do my show tomorrow,” The Pretenders singer replied.

Hynde once said she pledged to remain on the earth until all McDonald’s had burned to the ground.

Being the handsome vegan man he is, Moby is going to have his stalkers.

The latest obsessive fan is full of more plastic than Hollywood.

This looks like something you might watch during Spike Feresten’s Comedy For Stoners.

A plastic Barbie doll is obsessed with Moby in Cassidy Loves Moby, now playing on the Sundance Channel.

“Here I am,” she says in one episode. “Alone at the airport, chasing after some rock star. He comes to me in my dreams.”

Um, yeah. Many levels of creepiness.

Cassidy appears in various scenes blabbing about how much she is into the musician and in between her love gushes are clips with Moby interviews, quotes from his blog, and his tunes.

But we really need to know more about this doll’s diet before she tries to score with the “Troubles So Hard,” singer. As a healthy vegan, he’ll probably want someone similar.

The clip below shows her on an airplane seat with a package of what looks to be junk food goodies next to her, but little else is given on her diet. Those junk goodies could be bacon flavored.

She drinks bottled water, but that may mean she’s just wasteful and not conscious of the mile high piles of waste those unrecycled plastic bottles are creating in landfills.

Watch below and judge for yourself. Moby material? What the heck did plastic chick eat?

Katy Perry Could Make Veggie Whoopee With Benji Madden

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, February 17th, 2009 in Female Singers.

The 59th San Remo Song Festival 2009 - Day 1 - Photocalls

Lots of rumors were going around the web that “I Kissed A Girl,” singer Katy Perry was romantically linked to Paris Hilton’s ex, Good Charlotte musician Benji Madden.

The two of them were spotted sitting awfully close to each other on Valentine’s Day in Los Angeles.

Perry insists the two are just friends and her heart belongs to her cat, Kitty Purry. Yes, she named her cat after herself. Groan!

“Oh kittens! It’s two pseudo famous people sitting next to each other … doesn’t mean we were bumping uglies!” Katy wrote on her blog.

Well oh kitten purries! Bumping uglies or not, Perry could pick up a few tips for eating vegetarian from her new friend Benji, the non-bumping ugly partner.

Katy said she wanted to become a vegetarian for her New Year’s Resolution, but she liked chicken too much.

Benji could take her into the kitchen and show her how to cook up more than whoopee. Plus, since they both have items on the Denny’s Rockstar menu, they could even combine their culinary skills to make up one hot (or cold, raw is fine too) meal.

Pamela Anderson Doesn’t Want A Man Like Dear Old Dad

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, February 16th, 2009 in Actresses.

Strutting her stuff in a tiny black jumpsuit, Pamela Anderson leaves a Lucques restaurant

When former Baywatch babe Pamela Anderson was a young girl, she watched her father cut off the head of an animal he had hunted. That led to her becoming vegetarian in her early teens.

The old saying is that a woman wants a man just like dear ol’ dad, but apparently this can never be the case when it comes to beliefs about animals.

There was speculation that her and Kid Rock divorced over him having no problem hunting. We already know he has no problem with fur.

Neither Tommy Lee, nor Rick Salomon, nor Kid Rock have captured her heart permanently.

Pam was seen strutting around town with this unnamed gentleman recently. Could he be Pammie’s new compassionate love?

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi will be honored by the Humane Society next month for their love of animals, so it’s both ironic and disappointing that it’s been brought to our attention that vegan Ellen is the Cover gal for Cover Girl cosmetics, a company that still tests on animals.

Even more ironic, the ads featuring Ellen will debut around the time she is given her award.

Deceiver.com put its ever so sarcastic slant on things:

Proposition 2, eh? I remember that. It was right around the time she signed up to become Cover Girl’s newest spokesmodel, despite the fact the beauty company is the largest that still tests on animals. Die, bunnies!

Ironically those print ads just started appearing in the March issues of all the magazines. Great timing there, HSUS.

We’ve learned before that celebrities don’t always investigate companies before representing them. We’ve also learned that celebrities make decisions that seem to completely contradict other behaviors.

Even Portia called Ellen out on their first date for wearing calfskin leather.

The decision to live ethically is an ongoing process of keeping informed and doing your research. Have you supported a company in the past only to stop after finding out some of their business decisions were against your beliefs?

World Charity Premiere Of 'Three And Out' - Arrivals

M People vocalist Heather Small, who also was a contestant on the UK dance competition show, Strictly Come Dancing, has some favorite spots in London where she knows they’ll treat her like the veg queen she is and cater to her dietary requirements.

One of her favorite spots is Eat and Two Veg.

“They have good vegetarian options like meat-free sausages,” she said on VisitLondon.com.

In mixed veg and non veg company, E & O is her top pick because, “It’s private enough to have meetings there, the food is nice and they cater for my dietary requirements.”

This chick is even ethical down to her clothing as she’s into Stella McCartney’s boutique.

You can learn more about where you might find Heather while in London on VisitLondon.com.

Heather Mills: Builders Can’t Be Choosers

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, February 13th, 2009 in Models.

Farm Sanctuary's 2008 Gala

The story we posted about Kristen Bell cooking chicken in her crock pot for her roommates even though she herself is a vegetarian makes for some discussion: Do you think most vegetarians are opposed to cooking meat, even when it’s for someone they know personally? What if a vegetarian had a company or employees to look after? Would all the company parties be veg?

When Heather Mills treated the staff of builders on her Sussex home to a Christmas feast,  the workers were a little disappointed to learn the meal was vegan.

Monster and Critics reported one of them saying, “We couldn’t believe we were getting a slap-up meal. But it’s all strictly vegetarian – they’ve just shaped the stuff to look like turkey. What’s the point of that?”

The workers took it all in good stride, since Heather was at least serving enough alcohol for them to wash the Tofurky taste from their mouths.

“We will choke it down. After all, Heather’s not against alcohol. Apparently there’s going to be plenty to drink.”

Heather is a staunch vegan, so it would have been strange to hear she was serving meat for them. But what about the rest of you? If you were in Heather’s position, or if you were treating a staff of your employees or contractors, would you force the vegginess on them for that meal?
