Paul McCartney gives a press conference at the European Parliament - Brussels

“This isn’t just me, a vegetarian, banging on: it was a United Nations report … that got me interested. There’s a need to do something: the livestock industry produces more greenhouse gases than all forms of transport put together. People are confused about what they can do — they can try one meat-free day a week. It’s kind of interesting once you get into it.”

Getting into going meat-free may be an occasional treat to start.

But who knows?

After awhile, you may find it so hot, you’ll wanna do the veg thing every day.

Julia Powell “Julie & Julia” On Irritating Jonathan Safran Foer

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, December 7th, 2009 in Authors, Food & Drink.

"Julie And Julia" Screening At The Paley Center For Media

Julia Child rarely showed any love for vegetarians.

And the author of her life story, Julia Powell, admits she wasn’t keen on eating less meat until she read a book by one irritating vegetarian author named Jonathan Safran Foer.

“Jonathan Safran Foer irritates the shit out of me, but he’s right,” Powell said.

“He and I are really together in that what we’re trying to come to a decision about what we feel like we can eat. There’s got to be some middle ground between the industrial farming system and all the ways that’s broken and the various privileged ways people like me [respond].”

Powell now calls herself a “restaurant vegetarian”–meaning she will only eat meat when she knows where it’s coming from.

Working in a butcher shop allowed Powell to witness the gory details of “gruesomely grinning, fleshy half skulls, eyes still in their sockets” before meat gets to the plate.

“If you make a relationship with the people you’re getting your food from, you’re going to feel so much better, I promise,” said the author of Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen.

Or lose your lunch.

Like Paul McCartney said, “If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian.”

“Bored To Death” Heather Burns Vegetarian Until Chicken Week

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, December 5th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

HBO's "Bored To Death" Premiere

Heather Burns, the actress who plays Leah on HBO‘s Bored To Death, calls herself a “bad vegetarian” because she loves chicken.

“I eat chicken and I would eat chicken constantly,” Burns said.

Whoa, there!

That’s a little more bird talk than any “good vegetarian” can handle.

And Heather had a fairly good vegetarian week when she let Grub Street into her life recently to share all the things she loves to chow down on in New York City.

A few highlights:

Sunday, November 29
“I had coconut water with my red drink, and Bare Naked granola with soy milk. For lunch, I had just some Amy’s Kitchen organic chili mixed with brown rice. And for dinner I had Brick Lane, an Indian restaurant on 6th Street. It’s one of my favorite places on that street. I had the peeli dal. It’s really good and it’s vegan, so I eat that quite a bit.”

Monday, November 30
On Monday, I had a meeting and then I met my boyfriend at Orlin and had a spinach-and-feta-cheese omelette with orange juice and Earl Grey tea with soy milk.

Alicia Silverstone “Jewish Journal” December 2009

Alicia Silverstone The Kind Diet Book Launch Party

What non vegetarian food did you find hardest to give up after taking the big veg plunge?

For Alicia Silverstone, it was Shabbat dinners that made her weak in the knees.

“I freakin’ loved gefilte fish,” Silverstone told the Jewish Journal, during a recent interview.

Here are a few other highlights from the online story:

She Never Stopped Loving Meat:
I’m not the person who ever stopped loving the taste of meat. I’m a foodie. But I knew I had to give meat up to be able to look at myself in the mirror, to know that I’m a good person and a good Jew. How could I continue seeing myself as a person who cares about the world and yet be responsible for suffering?

On Equating Animal Slaughter To The Holocaust:
I’m always hesitant to go there, because I don’t want to alienate people. We all know that the Holocaust was devastating; one of my oldest, closest family friends was a survivor. But for me, it’s the truth. The production of animals is the greatest holocaust that is happening now, because it’s allowed.

On How A Vegan Lifestyle And Spirituality Connect:
I have found my peace in living in the world as kindly as I can. Going to yoga and meditation, and eating well — that’s how I feel my connection to God.

Bill Maher IHOP Cage Free Egg Plea–Humane Society PSA (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, December 3rd, 2009 in Animal Issues, Comedians, TV Hosts, Videos.

Bill Maher has collaborated with the Humane Society of the United States to record a PSA informing consumers that International House of Pancakes, IHOP,  continues to get eggs from suppliers that confine hens in battery cages.

It’s so cruel that Bill has nicknamed IHOP “International House of Pain.”

“You may come hungry to IHOP, but you shouldn’t leave happy,” Bill says.

“Not as long as they only use eggs from hens crammed into tiny cages, where they can barely move an inch.”

Maher points out that other restaurants like Denny’s and Burger King are using some cage free eggs, but IHOP has failed to make progress.

Sounds like IHOP needs to HOP on the progressive bandwagon and phase out this cruel method of obtaining eggs.
