Happy Vegan Day Georges Laraque!

NHL All Star Mascot Breakfast

Today is the day NHL player Georges Laraque turns vegan.

The Montreal Canadienes enforcer had been vegetarian for some time and recently told the Montreal Gazette he planned to go vegan on June 1st.

Georges has already blogged about his activism, participating in an anti-fur protest in Canada.

Making the plunge which involves eschewing dairy, eggs, and even certain types of clothing can be a challenge. Some may find themselves “going vegan” several times before they get it right.

Think Georges can pull it off? Give us your thoughts!

Wishing you a wonderful, animal-free life, Georges!

5th Annual Jammy Jam Awards

Nellie McKay is basking in the glory of being a mom these days. Best of all, she didn’t go through hours of labor to take the credit. She simply went to her local shelter and adopted a pit bull named Bess, who she was walking during our exclusive interview with her.

On her new bundle of joy
Her name is Bess. I’m on an email list that lets you know when animals are about to be put down at the local shelter. I never took in an animal because I travel so much. It didn’t seem fair to them and it seemed kind of impossible for me. But I just couldn’t say no to her. They had pictures of her still lactating. She had just given birth. They [former owners] had taken her puppies and dumped her. She was a throw away mom.

At first she pretended like she didn’t know how to sit. It turns out she just needed the incentive of a treat. She was pretending and she knew all along. She’s the greatest thing that ever happened. She’s the light of my life. She makes life worth living.

On the Obamas not choosing a shelter dog
I think he definitely made the wrong decision. The pressure should be on them for the next animal they get. All this pure-breed stuff…We should all be going after mutts. There are hypoallergenic mutts as well as breeds. We have to get rid of the whole breed mentality. It’s animal racism. Just don’t go for it.

It isn’t hard. The hypoallergenic dogs are available as we speak. The Humane Society and other animal rescue groups offered to help with that search. And the argument that it’s a personal decision-well, so is meat eating but it hurts others.

This seems like something that could have helped so many animals. It could have drawn attention to the plight of so many animals in shelters. They are so influential. It could have saved so many lives and made so many lives better for animals that are just languishing there waiting to be seen, let alone be adopted. I’m disappointed and I just hope that their second dog or cat they will get from a shelter.

Kathy Freston Celebrates Her New Book Quantum Wellness

“The single best thing you can do for optimal health is to cut way back on animal protein…until you can cut it out completely. Animal protein causes inflammation, among other things; it’s been conclusively shown to cause (and fan the flames of) cancer and heart disease. It burdens your body all around, insofar as circulation, hormonal imbalance, allergies, asthma, etc. But beyond that, optimal health includes a sense of inner wellbeing too. And I think it’s hard to feel really good, to have a sense that you are in synch with the upward thrust of evolution, if you are partaking in something that has become so cruel and unjust. When you eat in a pure way, that is kind and compassionate, an inner transformation happens that is more energizing than any vitamin or exercise regimen could ever be.”

—Author Kathy Freston, in an exclusive interview with Ecorazzi.com. Kathy is the woman who convinced Oprah Winfrey to go vegan for three weeks and is the author of several books, including her latest, The Quantum Wellness Cleanse.

Chrissie Hynde Joins PETA Protest Of KFC

Let’s face it, animal rights activists have to have thick skin.

When your motives are questioned, your tactics are ridiculed, and the cops are just waiting to shackle you at the slightest feeling the peaceful protest is turning ugly, it takes a lot of balls to get up routinely and stand up for creatures who cannot.

Not to mention those insane outfits!

From priests to fake bloody meat to animals to even getting downright naked, animal rights activists show no shame in dressing for the occasion to get the point across. Not a problem at all for vegan singer Chrissie Hynde.

“I don’t mind standing next to a guy dressed as a carrot chanting, ‘We’re not leaving ’til the cows come home,” Hynde told the Sunday Mail.

Or, standing next to a KFC chicken.

“If you’re willing to make a bit of a fool of yourself to make your point – that’s what you have to do.”

Whether it’s protesting KFC, McDonald’s or the mulesing industry, Chrissie has proven she never fails to pay her dues to the fools’ club.

Spock, Star Trek’s Vulcan Vegan, Questions His Flesh Eating Ways

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, May 22nd, 2009 in Actors, Pop Culture, Videos.

Trekkies unite! The 2009 Star Trek Movie is still in theatres, so put your Vulcan thinking caps on and find a good, logical reason to see the movie.

Vulcans aren’t always the coolheaded creatures they want to be, as Spock proved once when he savored the taste of animal flesh. But at least he questioned his ridiculous ways.

“Please pay no attention, I’m not myself. I’m behaving disgracefully. I have eaten animal flesh and I’ve enjoyed it. What is wrong with me?”

Admitting is the first step, Spock.

Owen Wilson Ticks Off Unlucky Vegan Duck By Cutting In Line

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, May 22nd, 2009 in Actors, Food & Drink.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian screening in Washington.

We are happy actor Owen Wilson was spotted shopping at One Lucky Duck, an organic, raw foods establishment with a restaurant, juice bar, and much more.

We’re unsure if Owen was grabbing grub or juice when he bypassed the takeout line to place his order, but apparently this made someone else waiting in line steaming broccoli mad.

Hey, movie stars need their raw fix more, okay. It’s a stressful world out there. Don’t prove Margaret Cho right about angry vegans, now.

Press conference for the 17th Life Ball 2009 in ViennaPamela Anderson is a work hard, play hard kind of gal and she proved this recently while attending the Vienna’s Life Ball AIDS event with other celebrities like Katy Perry, Bill Clinton, and Eva Longoria.

Before heading off to the ball, Pamela found time to chat with Austria’s justice minister, Claudia Bandion-Ortner about animal rights and free speech. It appears Austrian police are attempting to classify animal rights groups as criminals. When Pamela heard this news, she wrote a letter to Bandion-Ortner, asking for her assistance to prevent the potential censure of free speech.

The justice minister then invited Pamela to spend some quality one on one time with her, where she assured Pamela, she’d monitor the situation closely.

It helps to know people in high places.
