“I’m a vegan, but you can be really unhealthy as a vegan, too. Vegan just means that you don’t use animal products, so you don’t wear leather, you don’t wear wool, and you don’t eat animal products. But you can eat french fries and stuff like that all day.”

Emily Deschanel, clarifying that not every vegan is into it for health reasons. Fair, but you should at least try to follow a diet that excludes animal products and is better for you. Some occasional vegan junk isn’t bad. Our vote is for vegan ice cream and vegan cookies. What’s your favorite non-nutritional vegan item to chow down on?

Emily Deschanel and Tippi Hedren were both recognized recently for their contributions to animal welfare. Deschanel received the Humane Society’s Humane Advocate Award for her work with their Prop 2, anti-dog fighting and other campaigns. In the spirit of the holiday season, Hedren was praised by The Grinch and other members of Whoville from the cartoon “Whorton Hears A Who” with the Whomanitarian Award for getting legislation passed to protect big cats and caring for rescued tigers, lions and other cats at the Shambala Preserve, which she founded.

Emily Deschanel Receives Humane Advocate Award

Emily Deschanel is the queen of all things vegan. From her activism for animals to sharing her dietary advice to giving fashion tips, the Bones’ actress could be the face of humane if you looked up the word in the dictionary.

The Humane Society of the United States agrees and has honored Deschanel with the Humane Advocate Award for her work with animals.

Deschanel’s character on Bones is a vegetarian, and the producers have found ways to incorporate this lifestyle in episodes, such as one involving the mysterious disappearance of an animal rights activist investigating a chicken farm.

“When someone tells me they stopped eating chicken because of the Bones factory farming episode we did last year, I consider that a small victory,” Deschanel said in a statement.

Sea Shepherd is hosting a Night for The Oceans on October 23rd, to benefit the organization’s efforts.
