Kathy Freston, author of vegan diet and health book The Lean, appeared on HLN’s Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell to discuss how adopting a vegan lifestyle can help combat obesity, a disease one researcher has predicted will affect 32 more million people within two decades.

Although there’s no one cure for the disease, Freston suggests something as simple as an apple a day may keep the pounds away.

Of course, it helps if you eat it versus only balancing it on your head as Velez-Mitchell does in the segment.

Michael Clarke Duncan PETA Ad For Vegetarian Diets (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, May 10th, 2012 in Actors, Animal Issues, Food & Drink, Videos.

Michael Clarke Duncan PETA

Michael Clarke Duncan, best known for his role as John in The Green Mile and currently Leo Knox on the Fox television series The Finder, has recorded a PSA for vegetarianism for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Duncan was plagued with several health problems before going vegetarian and recalls it was a birthday approximately three years ago that prompted him to change. That change included switching to plant-based proteins like beans and tofu and giving away all his Omaha steaks, fish and chicken entrees to the neighbors.

We hope he tries to give them samples of seitan every now and then too.

Dr. Oz suggests watching carbohydrates and incorporating lean, plant-based protein.

“I don’t want you to become a carbotarian,” Oz says.

Jamie Kilstein

Jamie Kilstein is a vegan comedian who’s been a guest on SIRIUS radio, Conan and co-hosts the Internet political radio show, Citizen Radio.

Describing himself as a former “fat fast food eating piece of shit” who would have eaten “baby fingers in Mcnugget form” if it had been cooked for him, Kilstein incorporates his vegan beliefs both in his comedy routines and his political discussions.

Speaking of political discussion, Kilstein has a great response to the “God made animals for us to eat” argument.

“I’ve helped old people cross the street. You wouldn’t be like, ‘God created buses for a reason.’ Or, ‘That baby’s choking!’ ‘God created marbles for a reason.’ . . . ‘That couple’s being evicted from their home.’ ‘God created Bank of America for a reason.'”

Alicia Silverstone Suburgatory

Alicia Silverstone makes a debut on ABC’s Suburgatory tonight that seems a little type-casted.

But what vegan wouldn’t mind the honor of being, as Seattle Pi writes, the “farm-raised lass from Montana who instantly has George eating the crunchy, non-processed granola out of the palm of her hand.”

Silverstone’s character Eden meets George at the local Farmer’s Market and things get so steamy we don’t want to know what they do with those fruits and vegetables.
