Donna Karan Rabbit Fur Return Prompts PETA Protest

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, October 19th, 2010 in Fur, Videos.

Donna Karan is making herself known as the pendulum that can’t stop swinging in the fashion world. She used fur in previous clothing collections and after pressure from animal rights groups like PETA, agreed to remove it from her 2009 line.

However, she’s back again with designs that incorporate rabbit fur, so PETA used the opportunity to protest outside the location of a fundraiser Karan hosted with Michelle Obama, who won’t be wearing any items from the collection. Dan Matthews, senior VP of PETA was quoted by The Gothamist as saying, “We think Donna Karan should take a fashion tip from the first lady, who has officially announced that she is fur-free.”

Natalie Imbruglia Voices Anti-Fur Video For PETA

Natalie Imbruglia

Natalie Imbruglia judges contestants’ vocal abilities on X Factor, but recently she gave her own voice to an anti-fur video for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

“There is no kind way to rip the skin off animals’ backs,” Imbruglia says. “Anyone who wears any fur shares the blame for the torture and gruesome deaths of millions of animals each.”

“Saving animals is as simple as choosing synthetic alternatives instead of real fur.”

Natalie posed with a rabbit in an anti-fur ad for PETA in 2008, and she’s outspoken when it comes to criticizing other celebrities who wear animal skins, saying less than nice things about Jennifer Lopez during a Cosmopolitan interview in 2005.

Talbots Goes Fur Free. Again.

Talbots

Talbots

When a company reverses or ignores a previously established policy, it loses creditability. Talbots, a clothing store specializing in women’s fashions, has been on the Humane Society’s fur-free retailers list for a decade. However, the company recently listed an $89 rabbit fur collar for sale as part of its fall collection.

Word of this got out and the company received a deluge of phone calls, emails and posts on Facebook from unhappy consumers regarding the decision to reinstate fur. As a result, the company has dropped the fur offering and declared itself fur-free again. For now.

“Thank you for your concern.,” a statement from the company read. “Talbots always seeks to operate under the highest ethical standards. We have heard our customers’ concerns regarding the items offered that contained real fur. These items have been pulled from stores and are no longer available for sale. Talbots remains committed to its policy against the use of real fur in our collection.”

Bristol Palin “Dancing With The Stars” Costumes May Get Furry And Ugly

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, September 10th, 2010 in Fur, Reality TV.

Quick fact check. How many animals (not counting Levi Johnston) have been on Bristol Palin?

Unfortunately, that number may increase during this season’s Dancing with the Stars as rumors say the famous teenage mother and daughter of 2008 vice presidential candidate wants to use fur in her costumes.

“Bristol made clear to the costume designers that she loves fur,” a source, according to Popeater, said. “She said she thinks it’s sexy, classy and very glamorous and is encouraging the designers to use as much as possible on her costumes.”

Ugh!

One wouldn’t think the costume crew at DWTS would have Bristol sweating it up on the dance floor wearing a fur coat. Instead, Bristol will probably make use of fur trim in her outfits, which is killing more animals than full length fur outfits.

“Skin Trade” DVD On Fur Industry Available In September (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, September 6th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Fashion, Film & TV, Fur, Videos.

Skin Trade, a documentary on what goes on behind the scenes in the fur industry, is scheduled to be available on DVD September 14th, 2010.

Produced by Shannon Keith, animal rights attorney and founder of Animal Rescue, Media & Education (ARME), a nonprofit animal-advocacy group, Skin Trade is a definite must for activists looking for tools to educate others on what animals turned into fashion endure, but as Ecouterre points out, it shouldn’t necessarily be watched with a bowl of popcorn or your own pet in your lap as its graphic scenes are not for the faint of heart.

Morrissey Chimes In On Queen’s Guards Wearing Real Bear Fur Hats

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, August 2nd, 2010 in Animal Issues, Fur, Male Singers.

Morrissey wrote a letter to the UK Times praising Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe for unveiling footage of an undercover investigation of black bear baiting and hunting  and denouncing the practice of killing Canadian bears to use their fur to line the hats worn by the Queen’s Guards.

“Sir, I welcome Ann Widdecombe’s views on the depravity of bear-baiting in order to serve the vanities of the British Army Guards (Opinion, July 30). In the humanised world, of course, hats are not worth killing for. Yes, animal rights move different people differently, and there are even those who think that animals simply have no right to be, but there is no sanity in making life difficult on purpose for the Canadian brown bear, especially for Guards hats that look absurd in the first place, and which can easily be replaced by faux versions (thanks to the visionary Stella McCartney) with no death involved.”

Charlotte Ross PETA Urban Outfitters Shirt

Charlotte Ross PETA Urban Outfitters Shirt

It’s too bad most schools have a ban against clothing with nudity on it, cause these t-shirts would be the biggest fad since leg warmers or 80s puffy bangs.

The closest some boys will have Charlotte Ross, an actress who’s had roles in Glee, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and NYPD Blue, naked and on their bodies is by wearing this shirt available at Urban Outfitters.
