Natalie Portman Makes Christian Dior Give Her Non-Leather Shoes

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, December 10th, 2010 in Actresses, Environment-Eco-Green, Fashion.

Natalie Portman

You know you’ve got power when a major fashion label asks you to represent them, then remakes its fashion animal-friendly just so you can wear them.

That’s what Natalie Portman told WWD Chrisitan Dior has done with all its leather shoes it wants her to model.

“One of the things that’s been so nice is that Dior made all of the shoes for me with no animals and no leather or anything, because I don’t wear any leather…They re-made all my shoes so I can wear Dior shoes without taking lives.”

Leather just isn’t an animal issue, it’s also an environmental one. A 2009 Greenpeace report revealed several top shoe brands like Nike, Adidas and Reebok and their demands for leather may have played a role in the supporting cattle ranchers that were illegally slaughtering in the Amazon and contributing to the deforestation there.

Prince William and Kate Middleton are engaged and will marry in 2011, Clarence House announced today. The announcement came after speculation reached fever pitch following a visit by Kate's parents to the Queen's Scottish estate last month. The invitation was seen as a clear sign that the couple were poised to announce they were marrying. They have been together for eight years and have recently been spending much of their time in north Wales where William is a search and rescue pilot. Their wedding, scheduled for 2011, will be the biggest royal event since the wedding of William's mother and father. Most fashion, wedding and gossip columnists will have advice for Kate Middleton and Prince William‘s upcoming wedding in April. But the Telegraph’s Tamsin Blanchard has taken planning a step further from genre of flowers, dress design and cocktails.

Imploring the Prince and his fiancee to have a green wedding, Blanchard suggests a vegetarian lunch for the banquet, eco-friendly gowns and other dress by designers like Emma Watson and leather-free shoes from Stella McCartney.

These items are a start, but green weddings can go beyond food and fashion. The venue choice, for example, can cut down on car emissions, electricity and other energy used.

Glee may have sustainable eating, veg-friendly actresses like Lea Michele and Jenna Ushkowitz in the cast, but the show could do a little better when it comes to greening the set. At least a recent episode featuring Gwyneth Paltrow as the substitute glee club leader in “The Substitute” could have.

In a behind the scenes clip, Zach Woodlee, co-producer/choreographer of the show estimates they went through 300 umbrellas or so to film a scene putting a modern twist on “Singing In The Rain” by adding some Rihanna lyrics to it. This was because the umbrellas kept breaking during different takes.

For the rest of the season, the cast is ordered to only buy eco-friendly umbrellas, made from things like recycled aluminum and steel, bamboo handles and 100% PET bottles like the Tot eco’Brella.
