Sir Roger Moore Won’t Speak To His Foie Gras Friends

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 in Actors, Animal Issues.

Roger Moore Presents UNICEF 2009 Report

Sir Roger Moore has written a piece in the UK Daily Mail on why he is so against the production of foie gras.

This is a matter so close to his heart, he won’t return your phone calls if you take part in the industry which force feeds geese until their livers swell.

From the Daily Mail:

“When I played James Bond, I was used to fanciful scripts about violence and intimidation. And during 19 years campaigning for the children’s charity Unicef, I have come across appalling examples of inhumanity in the real world.”

“But I have seen few things so revolting and shaming as the horrendous routine cruelty to ducks and geese that goes into the production of one of the world’s so-called culinary delicacies, foie gras”

“And I refuse to speak to old friends who, even when they know how it is produced, are prepared to overlook the suffering for self-gratification. My wife Christina feels just the same. No creature deserves to be treated as these birds are for our delectation.”

“The methods used are not for the squeamish. The birds are crammed into tiny crates where they can’t move at all and are force fed every three hours with 4lb of a corn mash mixture which swells inside them often literally to bursting point. In human terms it is the equivalent of eating 45lb of pasta a day.”

Andrew G All Funked Out From Funky Pies Vegan Deliciousness

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 in Actors, Business, Celebrity Tweets, Restaurants, TV Hosts.

Leona Lewis Media Call

Andrew G. had the chance to Tweet about a vegan pie just before the carbs took their toll.

“Vegan pie Floater from Funky Pies in Bondi, nap soon. Coz that’s how I roll, huge serve of carbs then straight to sleep…”

Funky Pies is a great place to catch some vegan food in an Australian eatery that’s eco-conscious in every aspect of its business.

Besides serving great vegan food like “Brekkie’ Rolls” of Veg-sausage mix, beans, tomato, ‘bacon’ bits and “Funky Chunky” and “No Wurry Curry,” Funky Pies using biodegradable packing in all their take out products, serves fair trade coffee, and boasts its staff uniforms are made in sweatshop free factories.

Angie Stephenson, the self titled “Director of Funk” says on the website about Funky Pies’ specialization:

“That’s an easy one, who doesn’t love a good pie? You don’t have to be Aussie to enjoy a nice hot tasty pie with deliciously flaky pastry. You can get dodgy pies though, so I wanted to provide a product that was not only quick to cook and easy to eat, but a healthy alternative to the more common ‘meat’ pie where you are really not sure what part of an animal you are eating…mmm.”

We hear you, Angie. Mystery meat is totally different kind of funky.

David Duchovny is looks at little worse for wear as he leaves after-party for The Joneses at the Toronto Film Festival

Actor David Duchovny and author Kathy Freston were both spotted at Candle Cafe recently, enjoying some vegan grub.

Ahem…they were eating at separate tables.

Don’t want to get any of those rumors started.

Kathy, author of the Quantum Wellness books is a well known vegan and David has been spotted at vegan friendly restaurants in the past.

Is Duchovny a closet tofu eater?

Sure we’ll find out sooner or later.

“Bored To Death” With Jason Schwartzman: Episode 2 Preview

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, September 21st, 2009 in Actors, Film & TV, Videos.

Bored To Death premiered last night on HBO starring vegan Jason Schwartzman, who plays a pot smoking, drinking guy who ruminates too much about the sad parts of his life.

Schwartzman co-wrote Bored To Death, which is probably why there are so many vegan references in the television series.

Schwartzman’s character, Jonathan Ames, calls himself a non-practicing vegan and hooks up with a “radical vegan” helicopter mom (Parker Posey) in one episode, who sends him on a mission to recover her son’s skateboard from a group of bad street kids.

Here’s a clip from episode 2 of Bored To Death above.

Hugh Jackman Climate Change Kick Off Can Prompt Diet Change

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, September 18th, 2009 in Actors, Environment-Eco-Green, Food & Drink.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Japan Premiere

Actor Hugh Jackman is set to kick start Climate Week NYC on Monday, September 21st.

“I hope to be a voice for the billion people in developing countries who will be the hardest hit by changing weather patterns, by the droughts and floods that destroy their crops and threaten their food security,” Jackman said in a statement.

“Climate Week NYC provides an ideal forum to help underscore the urgency for world leaders to secure and fund an ambitious global climate change deal in Copenhagen that is effective, fair and binding.”

Wouldn’t it be great if Hugh also took a huge step in preventing climate change and cut back on meat?

If you recall, Hugh had said he ate copious amounts of chickens to build muscle for his role in X Men Origins: Wolverine.

“Let me tell you, I’m not vegan,” Hugh had said. “I ate so many chickens to make this body. If there is a place in hell for people who eat chickens, I have booked a suite bigger than anybody.”

Hugh might not eat as many chickens as he did then, but he has the ability to serve as an example of how more people can be fed (and improve the food security of developing nations) on plants and grains versus meat.

And any veggie environmentalist knows raising livestock for food is a huge blow to planet stability.

Kudos to Hugh for taking an interest in such a serious matter.

Sir Roger Moore Tells Selfridges No More Foie Gras

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, September 17th, 2009 in Actors, Animal Issues, Videos.

Roger Moore Presents UNICEF 2009 Report

James Bond actor Sir Roger Moore is on a mission to get the UK supermarket Selfridges to take foie gras off the shelves.

He’s so passionate about his cause that Mr. 007 sent a letter to Selfridges’ owner, Galen Weston, offering to buy the entire remaining stock of foie gras if Weston agreed never to restock it again.

If you don’t know how foie gras is produced, it’s not a pretty picture.

Geese are force fed so much food their livers swell and it’s this organ that’s considered a delicacy to some.

Pigging out on fine food-good.

Pigging out when you don’t want to and being eaten afterward-not so good.

Here’s a clip with James talking about his top mission, with some graphic footage of how geese are force fed.

Jeremy Piven Learned “The Sweet Truth” From Kelly Keough

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, September 17th, 2009 in Actors, Chefs, Film & TV, Food & Drink.

23rd Annual Nautica Malibu Triathalon

Jeremy Piven received a sugar free, gluten free and dairy free birthday cake while on the set of Entourage from chef Kelly Keough.

Yeah, the former mercury poisoning bedfellow was probably disappointed the cake was fish-free as well.

But the event led to an increase in Keough’s sales and she has her own cooking show on the Veria channel called The Sweet Truth.

Kelly is also the author of Sugar-Free Gluten-Free Baking and Desserts.

Defendor Screening - TIFF 2009

We briefly touched on the fact that Woody Harrelson turned Zombieland into a more environmentally friendly set during its shooting.

Now we’re learning more details on how Woody used his vegan eco powers to make the set a little greener.

Director Ruben Fleischer, who Woody convinced to eat veg during the filming, has revealed to WENN:

“He practices what he preaches and made us all aware. I’m far healthier since knowing him. He’s very persuasive.”

“He eats raw food and vegan items, so he had a chef making delicious things for him every day that he shared with me and the rest of the cast that was healthy and delicious.”

“One of the requirements for him doing the film was that we have a green set as much as possible. All the silverware was metal that could be washed and reused, as opposed to just thrown away.”

“If we did use plates or cups or glasses it was all biodegradable. We didn’t use plastic. Instead of having plastic water bottles, which he sees as a huge environmental threat, we had big coolers and everybody on the set got their own jug that they could refill.”

Wonder if Fleischer and the cast continued the veg and green efforts once the shooting wrapped up.
