Think being vegetarian is only easy if you live in NYC or Cali?

Ha!

Leilani Munter proves that wrong, as she and her husband reside in North Carolina and have no problem finding good grub.

Now, you are a devoted vegetarian living in Cornelius, North Carolina. How do you make that work? I imagine many post-race dinners and such are held in some not so veg-friendly establishments?

“We cook a lot at home but I have actually found that pretty much any restaurant you go to these days has something vegetarian on their menu. In the rare event where there is not a vegetarian meal on the menu, if you ask the chef, they will usually whip up something amazing. I think the chef’s enjoy it too because they get to be creative.”

You didn’t think a self professed “vegetarian  hippie chick” would let a little geography get her down, did you?

Normally, this would be saved as a Fur Real or Fur Fake, but with Kanye West ‘s history of fur lovin’, what’s the point of even asking.

He and girlfriend Amber Rose attended the Louis Vuitton Fashion Show dressed to kill–even though something already looked dead.

When he and Amber attended another fashion show by the vegetarian Stella McCartney, Kanye kept asking where the fur fashions were.

Duh!

Vegetarian singer Pink responded by saying, “There are so many people who I think are a waste of skin and he’s up there. I should wear him. Go on, donate yourself Kanye. People can wear your fur.”

What motivates you to stay veg?

Pure dislike of meat? Animal welfare? The Environment?

Alicia Silverstone gives plenty of reasons for staying the vegan course.

“I have three dogs. One day I realized if I wouldn’t eat my dogs, why eat any animals, any meat? Why’s a baby cow different from a dog? They have the same joys, same pain.”

Of course, there were great benefits for her health and beauty, too.

“At the time I was using an asthma inhaler, suffering with acne, getting allergy shots, on antibiotics.”

“I love beets, and I look forward to using both red and golden varieties every winter. Once the beets are cooked, I like to slice them paper-thin with a mandoline and stuff them [like a pocket] with cashew cheese. Or I roll them up with a tofu ricotta, which I batter for vegan tempura. Diced beets also make a nice addition to a composed salad.”

New York city councilman Tony Avella had plans to discuss removing horse drawn carriages from city streets at a public hearing today, according to the New York Post.

“In the last 18 months, there have been at least seven accidents involving horses in the city, with three horses killed and five people injured,” said Avella.

“And that’s only the ones we know about,” he said.

Several celebrities have shown their support to end the long tradition, including Alec Baldwin and Chrissie Hynde.

Baldwin once compared the industry to “drug dealers” and “public intoxication” and Glee star Lea Michele lent her face to a PETA advertisement, Buck Cruelty.

Cited by The Gothamist, New York state director for the Humane Society Patrick Swan said, “Carriage horses often work in oppressive and inhumane weather conditions, including in the sweltering heat and extreme cold. The horses were forced to work – despite the bitter cold, despite the icy, dangerous and slippery conditions, and despite current laws that say they should not have been out on the streets working and competing in the traffic with emergency vehicles.”

Avella hopes to take 220 horses off the streets of the NYC.

Will some of them retire through the Carriage Horse Adoption Program?

Fred Schneider of the B-52s hooked up with Noah Brodie and Dan Marshall to form The Superions in 2006.

Their latest song, Who Threw That Ham At Me, has Schneider, Brodie and Marshall disagreeing on what makes a good meal.

“Who doesn’t love a juicy, fatty, salty, canned ham covered in pineapple slices and those red dye #2 cherries?” said Marshall, in an interview with Music Remedy.

“I don’t” said Schneider. “I’m a vegetarian.”

“Where’s the sweet potatoes with marshmallows?” asked Brodie.

Can’t blame Scheidner for turning down an entree of pig and artificial coloring.

But sweet potatoes and marshmallows sound great, as long as those marshmallows are the vegan kind like Sweet and Sara or Dandies.

In case you didn’t already think eating meat is close to criminal, the idea for Who Threw That Ham At Me makes the case even more believable as Schneider says the song is all about shoplifting.

“It’s based on a true story someone told someone I know,” he said.

“I saw a woman in a movie stick a big steak down her pants” added Noah.

Whether or not meat causes crime rates to increase has yet to be determined.

What would you do if you woke up one day to find your previously known as vegetarian son or daughter sinking his or her teeth into a Carl Jr.’s burger?

Comedian and Celebrity Apprentice star Carol Leifer would have a heart attack–even though her cholesterol is probably pretty low from all that soy she consumes.

“I don’t know how or if I could ever handle that,”  Leifer said, in the February 2010 issue of Vegetarian Times. “The day I see my son biting into a hamburger, you’re going to have to revive me.”

As for now, little three year old Bruno is enjoying the same diet as mom, with no signs of rebellion.

“He loves tofu and edamame. And your kids really do want to eat what you eat.”

Plus, Leifer’s already introduced him to the animal welfare side of things.

“Hopefully, we’ll have inundated him with so much knowledge that he’ll make the connection between visiting Animal Acres and recognizing that those animals were spared from some place.”
