Ana Ortiz Anti McDonald’s National Council Of La Raza Letter

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 in Actresses, Animal Issues.

Tiffany & Co. and InStyle Honor Maria Sharapova and Frank Gehry

Ana Ortiz is asking the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), a Latino civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States, to avoid any future partnerships with McDonald’s, on grounds of both inhumane animal and human treatment.

The NCLR’s 2009 press conference was sponsored by the fast food giant, so Ana took the opportunity to write to the council.

“I was shocked to learn that McDonald’s sponsored the National Council of La Raza’s (NCLR) 2009 conference in Chicago. As an organization dedicated to improving the lives of Hispanic Americans, you certainly must be aware that McDonald’s has very close ties to an industry that’s notorious for exploiting Hispanic immigrants—not to mention the fact that the company is responsible for the suffering and abuse of millions of animals every year.”

“The slaughterhouse is a dismal place for workers. The dim lighting and filthy air—which is filled with dust, debris, and feathers from terrified birds’ flapping wings—leads to accidents and injuries. Chickens struggle, peck, and scratch in resistance and frequently vomit and defecate as a result of stress. Poorly paid slaughterhouse workers—many of whom are Hispanic immigrants—usually receive no medical benefits despite their susceptibility to on-the-job injuries. Because companies will often fire these employees rather than pay for medical care, many workers do not seek treatment for their injuries out of fear of losing their jobs.”

Ana Ortiz: One Of Those Vegetarian Until Pregnant Women

Talk about news!

How is it we are just now finding out about Ana Ortiz being a vegetarian? She must be keeping mum because there are very few sources about her being one.

Sadly, we are here to report that the Ugly Betty actress, like other women we’ve reported on, gave into insatiable meat cravings during her pregnancy.

From an interview with cookiemag.com:

“During my pregnancy, it has been much more difficult [to stay vegetarian] because I have really been craving meat. So I make sure it is local, grass-fed, and healthy—as healthy as possible. Otherwise, I stick to vegetarianism.”

Ana had mentioned she wanted to bring her baby up as eco-friendly as possible and we had suggested she and baby go veg.

Hopefully, now that little Paloma Louise Lebenzon is done cooking in the oven, Ana will go back to the veg life-taking the tyke with her.

Say, does anybody know the phenomena behind those crazy meat cravings during pregnancy? Any PhDs or other researchers out there? What gives?

Ugly Betty’s Ana Ortiz: How About A Veg, Eco Baby!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, June 21st, 2009 in Actresses, Environment-Eco-Green.

Marriage Equality Rally in New York City

Ugly Betty star Ana Ortiz is about to give birth any minute now!

She recently chatted with Celebrity Baby Blog on her plans to bring the child up as eco friendly as possible.

“And for me, I’ve been really lucky to get all of this yummy organic clothing, and my nursery is all organic and eco-friendly. My daughter’s just going to be really hip! My goal is to be as eco-conscious as possible: There’s so much out there for parents who want to do that. I plan to keep her eco-friendly as she gets older. I think we all sort of have to do it. I’m lucky enough to be able to do it, so we just have to drive the market toward it so it becomes more possible to make and more accessible to consumers. People will realize how much easier and better it is to be local and organic. But it’s just not available to everyone right now.”

We’d like to do a little PSA for vegetarianism and remind Ana how easy it is to be EXTREMELY eco friendly by just going veg!

She and baby would lighten their carbon footprint tremendously by taking meat off the plate. By going vegetarian, they’d help reduce the number of livestock gas emissions and free up land space to grow plant crops for humans, versus farms animals. Not to mention what a better way to bring a baby in the world and teach it about kindness than instructing it to refrain from partaking in the cruelty of killing and eating animals.

Go veg, Ana. There’s nothing ugly about that!

Skin Care For Athletes is an all natural, organic skin care line that does not contain any animal or animal byproducts. Recently the company was invited by GBK productions to attend the 2008 Golden Goggle Awards and present their goodies in the VIP Gift Bag.

Several athletes and celebrities were there to enjoy it, including “Ugly Betty” star Ana Ortiz, who plays Betty’s older (and very sexy) sister, Hilda.

“I love[it], love the smell and it feels so nice,” she was quoted as saying of the Tri-Body Moisturizing Spray.

It’s fantastic to see a cruelty free product being given props by celebrities, such as when Whoopi Goldberg was excited to hear the PureOlogy product she was using was vegan.

We at the Veg Star personally like Aubrey Organics products. Most are vegan, and of course none are tested on animals.

Do you have a beauty or personal care product that’s cruelty free you enjoy?
