Tobey Maguire was spotted nibbling on vegetable Tempura at Tao Restaurant in New York City. As a supporter of the Healthy School Meals Act, could he want fried green veggies replacing french fries on school cafeteria menus?

Tao wraps numerous veggies in batter, such as onions, sweet potatoes, asparagus, onions, eggplant and even avocado.

Some tempura batters contain egg, as Vegan Yum Yum points out, but you can easily replace it with a substitute like Ener-g and fry, fry, away. When heating oil suitable for high heat, like Safflower, how can you tell the oil is hot enough before you dip? Vegan Yum Yum says to watch for the fireworks.

“When you drop a batter coated veggie in, little bits of batter will explode off the veggie outward like tempura fireworks. These bits, called tenkasu, are a good indication that your batter is hot enough.”

Get more tips for your homemade veggie tempura, including a recipe at Vegan Yum Yum.

Bob Irwin Video Message About Saving Australia’s Kangaroos

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, June 1st, 2010 in Animal Issues, Videos.

Bob Irwin, father of the late Steve Irwin known as the “Crocodile Hunter,” on Animal Planet, has recorded a message supporting Australia’s kangaroos at a recent fundraiser in Sydney.

According to the Australian Society for Kangaroos, the kangaroo industry killed approximately 3.6 million kangaroos in 2008 to export meat and supply skins to shoe companies in Europe, Asia and the United States.

The Society also cites recent data showing that in areas allowing commercial kangaroo hunting, the species is experiencing a “quasi-extinction,” (less than 5 per square kilometre), putting their numbers in jeopardy.

Irwin has spoken out against the industry before, when it was announced export to China would begin in 2010.

There was the satire version of The Last Supper involving vegan Judas (of course the non meat eater is portrayed as the evil, traitor).

Now PETA is promoting another veggie version of the meal featuring Jesus and the disciples, this time putting Paul McCartney and Pamela Anderson at the table, an exhibit on display at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Pamela is, as would be expected, revealing more skin than Paul.

“The Diner” was created inside a 28 foot 1955 Airstream trailor by a University of Texas at Dallas professor. One side of the trailor features The Last Supper scene, while visitors can take a look on another to view pictures of factory farms.

“If I was just another vegetarian, tree hugging, biology graduate asking people to give up meat and stop using plastic bags, I don’t know how many people would be listening to me. But because I drive a race car, I have an ability to reach a new audience of people that most environmentalists are probably not talking to.”

Leilani Munter, (from Savings) race car driver who’s publicly spoken out about environmental and vegetarian issues, and often incorporates green themes into her racing, such as placing recycled bins at the track and selling t-shirts made with recycled materials.

Leilani recently took the time to record a PSA on the oil spill in the Gulf Coast. Sure hope her influence helps prevent a catastrophe like this again.
