Who says meat is necessary to celebrate a day of freedom and honor those who fought and gave their lives for it?

Carolyn Scott-Hamilton, executive producer, creator, host and writer of The Healthy Voyager Brand, a web series, radio show and blog on traveling healthy and green, has provided some delicious recipe ideas for the holiday weekend if you’re the type who celebrates with good food.

Break out the grill now to prepare some Tropical Chick’n Sticks skewers, made with Gardein faux chicken. If fake meat’s not your thing, prepare the Summer Grillin’ Veggie Sandwich with vegan mayonnaise and vegan cheese.

Vegan chef Christina Pirello took to the Huffington Post to discuss how fast food companies like McDonald’s have lured children into their restaurants through the use of clever, cheerful marketing and a few plastic toys here and there.

“Since the Happy Meal hit the menu under the Golden Arches, childhood obesity has ballooned from 4.2% to 17%, according to the Centers for Disease Control. This hugely successful public relations brainstorm, linking cheap food with cheap toys (which actually dates as far back as free junk toys in Cracker Jacks and cereal boxes and on top of Ovaltine jars) led corporation after corporation to see the opportunity to make money off your kids’ desires. Before long, all that disposable plastic junk found its way into almost every bag of high-fat, high-sugar meal while hawking the movies your kids are dying to see.”

The balm is made from 95% organic ingredients, and like other EOS (Evolution of Smooth) products, contains no parabens, petrolatum or phthalate. There’s no gluten either, so you can lick, lick away at the three flavors of  pomegranate raspberry, vanilla bean and sweet mint if you’re avoiding that ingredient too.

Besides the lip balm, the MTV Movie Awards gift bags will contain EOS ultra-moisturizing shave cream and smooth sphere lip balm with SPF 15.

EOS products are not tested on animals.

JET Erykah Badu

JET Erykah Badu

Erykah Badu is featured on the cover of JET Magazine, a publication geared toward African-Americans that covers topics such as politics, entertainment, health and beauty.

A sneak peak at the contents of her interview inside from Bossip:

“In the new issue of JET, the outspoken singer sounds off about controversial video, motherhood and more. Gearing up for her Out My Mind, Just In Time multi-city tour, the mother of three tells Jet¹s Senior Writer Clarence Waldron that she’s not moved by the recent controversy about her artistry or anyone’s opinion about her in general.”

Will the vegan who’s never shied away from discussing her diet with the press talk about the veggie snacks she feeds to daughter Puma? Or what the Healthy School Meals Act means to her as a mother of vegan children?

The issue with Badu hits the stands on May 31, 2010.

"Spain... On The Road Again" Television Series Launch

Mark Bittman‘s “Vegan Before Six” approach to reducing your meat intake is becoming popular, but it’s not the only way to do vegetarian part time.

In an article from MSN, over a dozen suggestions are made for eating less meat, and some may surprise or even entertain you.

For example, there’s the “Don’t Go There,” approach:

“Avoid the meat areas of your supermarket. Out of sight, out of mind, right? It works for me.”

Ask veggie friends to cook for you (better yet, pay them to do so):
“If you have similar pals, watch them cook. Ask how they get by. Eat with them. Vegetarians are experts at non-meat lifestyles, and you can learn a lot just by hanging out in their circles.”

The forward/shooting guard worked with animal rights group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, in a campaign to spay and neuter pets after he experienced a series of incidents where authorities had to remove dogs from his home.

Artest cited PETA as the organization that helped turn him around and taught him how to care properly for his animals.

On his blog, Barlett, explained the decision came after reading Alicia Silverstone‘s vegan diet and lifestyle book, “The Kind Diet.”

“I had recently read Alicia Silverstone’s great book “The Kind Diet” and started to come to terms with the impact of meat eating on myself, on the animals who are being “factory farmed” and on the environment.”
