John Bartlett recently launched the Ambassador Collection–t-shirts benefiting Farm Sanctuary, one of the nation’s largest animal sanctuaries for abused and neglected farm animals.

A vegan who eliminated leather from his fashion collections a few years ago, Bartlett spoke to Businessweek about his success as a cruelty-free designer in the industry.

All designers pledged to adhere to eco-friendly standards when creating the pieces, so it’s no surprise vegan designer John Bartlett made the decision to write to Salma Hayek, one of the hosts of the event, urging her to keep fur out.

Although he has been known in the fashion community for his use of leather, starting in September, those pieces will be discontinued and he will look for non-leather alternatives to use in his designs.

On his blog, Barlett, explained the decision came after reading Alicia Silverstone‘s vegan diet and lifestyle book, “The Kind Diet.”

“I had recently read Alicia Silverstone’s great book “The Kind Diet” and started to come to terms with the impact of meat eating on myself, on the animals who are being “factory farmed” and on the environment.”
