Elisabeth Hasselbeck‘s Got Milk? advertisement titled “Family Poutrait” with her husband Tim has been unveiled to some members of the press, with the official debut to appear in the June/July issue of Scholastic Parent & Child magazine. The ad touts the importance of milk’s calcium, potassium and Vitamin D.

Of course those can be found in non-dairy sources and in soy, rice and almond milk, as any vegan who will immediately take offense to this will tell you. Some studies even suggest animal sources of dairy, regardless of nutrients, are detrimental to humans. And animal welfare issues have kept many from wearing their mustaches knowing a dairy cow is usually sent to slaughter after five years, although her natural lifespan could be 25.

We know that if it’s going to be milk, it should come from organic, non-factory farmed, non rBGH cows. And there’s an experiment discussed in a book Cows of the Earth by Rancher Prime that involves small farming and no slaughtering once a female cow is past her milking days.

Can milk ever be obtained in a completely ethical manner, especially in quantities large enough to supply an entire nation?
