Food justice champion and eco-chef Bryant Terry doesn’t use any animal products in his recipes, but the author of Vegan Soul Kitchen would prefer to keep the “V” word out of conversation.

He told Oregon Live why:

“One of the things people associate with vegan cuisine are all those processed “meat” products, like textured vegetable proteins, which I avoid entirely. I just like cooking with real food. I want people to really understand that when they’re eating plant-based, real foods it’s flavorful, delicious and healthy. That’s why I originally didn’t want my book labeled “vegan.” It’s a good way to encapsulate what I’m doing, but it’s also limiting because it’s bigger than veganism. It’s about this rich history and tradition of African Americans, and people in the South eating good, local, seasonal food. I think people need to understand that since the perceptions of African American and Southern cooking are so negative.”

Trey Parker has included a talk on DVD commentary on why he and Matt Stone chose to poke fun of Captain Paul Watson on a South Park episode titled Whale Whores.

If you can remember, the episode portrayed Watson and the Sea Shepherd crew in a less than positive light (is anyone portrayed positively on South Park?) and Parker says that although he and Stone are against whaling, they’re not cheering on Watson’s attempts.

“They come up with some big plan and then somehow they f*ck it up,” Parker says. Listen to how Parker explains, in his opinion, how.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, June 24th, 2010 in Food & Drink, TV Hosts, Videos.

Oprah Winfrey is holding a contest called Your Own Show: Oprah’s Show For The Next TV Star where viewers upload their ideas for a daytime show, whether it’d be about cooking, fashion or other issues and their clips are voted on.

Convert My Grill is a segment upload by vegetarian Justin Barker that wasn’t received too well by Oprah’s people. According to the San Franciscoist, the submission was banned from the contest twice–once for using alcohol in the clip and another for Barker using his friends instead of going solo.

Picky, picky…

Convert My Grill shows Barker and a friend making over another friend’s grill, making a homemade seitan-like sausage and swapping chicken for both it and asparagus.

Sarah Silverman can make a joke out of just about anything. But the state of school lunches today is no laughing matter and the comedian showed her serious side when she wrote to Congress, requesting it pass the Healthy School Meals Act. Silverman joins several celebrities who have voiced their support for the bill that would make vegetarian options more readily available in schools nationwide.

“All kids—vegetarian or not—should have healthy options. I think we forget the simple fact that what we put in our bodies directly effects our bodies. Many kids aren’t able to bring lunches from home—they have to eat what’s in the lunch line. Without healthful options in the cafeteria, we’re doing our children and the future of our country a great disservice.”
