Who Would You: Elizabeth Berkley Or Pamela Anderson

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009 in Actresses, Polls/Surveys, Who Would You.

Elizabeth Berkley and Pamela Anderson are two of PETA’s most prized celebrity activists.

Whether it be chasing another celebrity to educate them on meat eating or casually dropping a business card at restaurants telling them to put more vegetarian items on the menu, these ladies are more than Hollywood pretty faces.

And they both look great in leaf lettuce. What a coincidence!

So between the two vegetarian actresses, who would you rather do…

2009 The 24 Hour Musicals - After Party

“Children have a natural empathy with animals. They carry around a teddy bear and are taught to love animals. All those fairy tales have animals in them. Then kids are taught to accept their exploitation and death. I do think people try to do the best they can, but they get hit by mixed messages from every direction. They get confused and need to learn.”

—-Singer and songwriter Nellie McKay, in an interview with popmatters.com

Talk about mixed messages…Kids grow up with cats and dogs as pets and cows and chickens as food. No wonder the adolescents of today are so angst ridden!

Jim Carrey Says Swine Flu Exists Because We Treat Pigs Badly

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009 in Actors, Animal Issues.

DISNEY LAUNCHES A CHRISTMAS CAROL TRAIN TOUR

Jim Carrey made a statement during his acceptance speech at the MTV movie awards that sounded as if he has a beef with pig factory farming.

“There wouldn’t be a swine flu if we treated the pigs better!” Carey said.

Is he referring to the cramped conditions pigs are kept, where they have little to no room to move around and often lie in their own and other animals’ excrement? Dr. Michael Greger of the Humane Society agrees these are breeding grounds for diseases.

When a celebrity makes a statement that has animal rights tones in it, vegetarians get really excited, even if that celebrity isn’t veg.

Still, perhaps out of optimism, statements can be taken out of context. Remember when Kelly Clarkson cancelled her show at the rodeo? Here we thought she was doing it out of concern for the animals, but the show was just inconvenient for her schedule. Not to mention, she even quit being a vegetarian!

We hope Jim means exactly what he said and sees factory farming for what it really is-unhealthy for the planet, the animals’ and human health.

While you’re on the subject of sticking up for the animals Jim, tell girlfriend Jenny McCarthy to lay off that mammal killing Botox!

Chrissie Hynde Hates Zoos, Loves Performing At Them?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009 in Animal Issues, Female Musicians, Female Singers.

Chrissie Hynde Unveils New PETA Advert

Chrissie Hynde is always outspoken on animal rights issues and is a stickler about practicing what she preaches. The woman even bans meat during her performances, requesting seitan “wheat meat” sandwiches be served at her concerts.

So it comes as a surprise that after speaking out against zoos, she’ll be playing at one for her summer tour promoting her latest album, Break Up The Concrete.

The Oversneer at Deceiver.com  explains.

Chrissie Hynde is scheduled to perform at the Minnesota Zoo in August. But during an interview with Australian activist group Animal Liberation, she expressed interest in animals being free.

June: “I despise zoos and circuses with animals. What about you Chrissie?”
Chrissie: “The animals have got to be free.”

Chrissie is not a typical two-faced celebrity, so hearing this news is rather strange. Could it be the result of the forceful hand of a management company dictating an artist’s schedule.

Maybe Chrissie wants to use the opportunity to denounce zoos once she’s on stage.

Genesis Awards 2009

Heather Mills recently Tweeted about her plans to come out with a vegan dog food brand.

Yay for Fido, Fluffy, and Max!

Heather didn’t give any specifics when she replied to one of her followers on Twitter, just that a brand was in the works.

A vegan restaurant opening next month, frozen food products to come, and veggie dog chow in the creative draft phase. Could Heather be on her way to having her own vegan empire?

Several veg celebrities have vegan dogs, including Alicia Silverstone, Paul McCartney, and Bollywood babe Shahid Kapoor

Alicia Silverstone claims her dogs pass less gas because of their vegan diet, which some pet owners believe is the only way to go. If they won’t let an animal suffer for their own food, why should it be any different for their canine friends?

Premiere Of International Film Circuits The Hammer - Arrivals

Don’t you hate it when you’re a vegan and you’re forced to eat rat’s tail in an eating contest on some reality TV show? It’s a bummer!

Episode one of I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here featured John Salley in an eating competition with Heidi Montag. The treat? Delicious rat tail. Salley swallowed ratatouille booty whole, while Heidi was ladylike and nibbled.

Could the menu on episode one, be the reason Heidi quit?

John Salley, the artist formerly known as vegan, had told several media sources he planned to eat raw and vegan while in the Costa Rica jungle. Rat tail’s raw alright, but definitely not vegan. Unless there’s some fake rodent meat substitute Whole Foods isn’t stocking at the moment.

Episode one and Salley is already breaking his veganness. What do you guys think about the situation? Did Salley naively think he could only eat vegan on the show?
