Meatless Mouthful: Nellie McKay Says Kids Get Mixed Messages About Animals
Written by Vegetarian Star on June 3rd, 2009 in Female Musicians, Female Singers, Meatless Mouthful.
“Children have a natural empathy with animals. They carry around a teddy bear and are taught to love animals. All those fairy tales have animals in them. Then kids are taught to accept their exploitation and death. I do think people try to do the best they can, but they get hit by mixed messages from every direction. They get confused and need to learn.”
—-Singer and songwriter Nellie McKay, in an interview with popmatters.com.
Talk about mixed messages…Kids grow up with cats and dogs as pets and cows and chickens as food. No wonder the adolescents of today are so angst ridden!

Not only that, kids are taught animals are easily dispensable.
Pets are all too often returned for silly reasons because adults aren’t patient or aren’t smart enough to investigate if that particular animal is right for the home.
When hard times hit financially, the pet is the first to go, etc. There is a shelter in a suburb near me that is really feeling the effects of the recession. But some of these people are living in lavish homes and spent money unwisely-it’s a very wealthy suburb-and the animals now have to live at the overcrowded shelter because of improper financial planning…very sad.
