UFC 109 Relentless–Vegan Fighter Mac Danzig V. Justin Buchholz

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, February 5th, 2010 in Athletes-Games-Sports.

The UFC 109 Relentless event will be held at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada tomorrow and will be broadcast on pay per view.

The Ultimate Fighter 6 winner and veggie athlete Mac Danzig is set to compete against Justin Buchholz.

MMA Junkie recently spoke with Danzig and joked about how he left the limelight and got “fat,” while taking some time off.

“Never mind how you get fat as a vegan (answer: Trader Joe’s vegan oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and soy ice cream); he hadn’t taken off that much time since he got in the game almost nine years ago. “

Getting fat as a vegan sounds like the best way to go, since so many delicious egg-free and dairy-free desserts exist on the shelves today.

Plus, it’s easy to go back to your “lightweight” once you cut the sweets and eat only one tofu tamale instead of seven.

Danzig’s got high hopes for coming out a champion this weekend.

“Am I still good enough to still compete at this level of the sport and still have that fighting spirit? I feel I do,” he said.

“If he beats me fairly, then I feel like I should take a step back from that level of sport. But I’m confident. I truly believe I’m going to win.”

We love our veggie athletes, like Georges Laraque, so much, we can’t stop talking about them.

Which is why we’re proud to bring you “10 Superstar Athletes Who Don’t Eat Meat”, courtesy of treehugger.com.

First base man Prince Fielder made the list, along with famed vegetarian bodybuilder Bill Pearl, football quarterback Joe Namath, and Iron Man champ Dave Scott.

“Dave Scott holds the record for most Iron Man World Championship victories ever (along with his rival Mark Allen, who managed to rack up an equal number of wins). The Iron Man competition, which consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26 mile marathon run, is one of the most strenuous physical feats in the world. And Scott won six of them, all while vegetarian. He even came out of retirement at 40 to compete again, and took second place. Today, at age 55, he still participates. In other words, this is one gnarly vegetarian dude.”

There’s just one problem, dude. Where’s Mac Danzig?

The Ultimate Fighter 6 winner and UFC contract holder has been a vegan since 2004 and has always been public about his diet to major media sources like Men’s Fitness

Ah, we get it. Someone must have drafted him before Treehugger got dibs.

“I think that’s funny. From personal experience, I eat plenty of stuff with soy and nothing’s happened. I know people who’ve taken testosterone and they’ve gotten gynecomastia from the extra testosterone. So if testosterone can make your body produce more estrogen, then wouldn’t eating something that supposedly raises estrogen levels also raise your testosterone? My body would want to level it out.”

—-Ultimate Fighter Mac Danzig, when asked in an interview by Men’s Fitness, “What do you think about the claims that soy protein is estrogenic and will make you grow boobs and cause your balls to fall off?”
