Jane Velez-Mitchell’s got a new book coming out in October.

iWant is all about her journey to recovering from iwanting too much and that desire leading to overeating, smoking, excessive drinking, and excessive consumption.

Jane is no stranger to sharing her vegan beliefs in her work on Issues With Jane Velez-Mitchell on CNN’s Headline News, and iWant includes a chapter titled, “Veganism/Animal Activism: I Want to Make a Difference.”

Making a difference means making thoughtful purchase choices that will ultimately affect everything surrounding us from the planet to our health to the economy.

According to heeb’n’vegan, Jane writes these choices are sometimes so overwhelming, she has to pray about it.

“Every morsel of food I put into my mouth is an environmental, political, moral, and spiritual choice. Every household product I buy is an environmental, political, moral, and spiritual choice. I always try to think before I choose. Sometimes, when I’m in a quandary, I pray before I choose.”

Making good choices about our purchases isn’t as easy as looking at the bottom line. Organic or local? Vegan company or mainstream business offering a line of vegan products? Trade Fair trade for your favorite brand?

How do you make the tough purchase decisions in your life? What rules do you follow?

Operation Smile Presents The 2009 Smile Event

John Salley is a vegan, but doesn’t think that will hurt his chances in the reality TV show I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here competition. In fact, the raw jungle is exactly what he needs to survive on daily.

“Yeah, I’m a Vegan and part of what I do is promote lifestyles, healthy lifestyles and when they ask me about obesity in the black and Latino world with these young kids, so I would teach about food and how food can help you and nourish you and the best thing about this is they’re going to put me in a jungle around a lot of green foliage and I can show you what the raw diet will do for your body. I’m going in with all green products if they’ll let me where it. I’ll just show you that you can be part of the environment.”

Salley does give a whole new meaning to the term “raw vegan” but hey, more power to him with his all you can eat green foliage buffet.  As long as he’s not feasting on any tarantulas, we know he’ll stay strong and true to his word.

John Robbins Says Non Vegetarians Should Find Meat Disgusting

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, May 30th, 2009 in Authors, Food & Drink, Videos.

Ah, John Robbins is such a hero.

The man gave up a zillion of a fortune as heir to the Baskin Robbins ice cream company to become an author and speak out against animal product industries that include 31 flavors of dairy.

In Processed People: The Documentary, Robbins states that even non-vegetarians would be turned off by the meat industry if they saw what went on behind closed doors.

“And the degree of cruelty that’s involved in modern meat production is so severe. You don’t have to a vegetarian, you don’t have to be an animal rights activist to find it deplorable – to find it appalling — if you actually see what it is, how far it’s gone, how grotesque. ”

Watch the clip to hear John talk about the horrors of the meat industry.

Alison Lohman’s Drag Me To Hell Has Vegetarian Sacrificing Animals. Okaaay.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, May 30th, 2009 in Actresses.

Premiere Of Universal Pictures Drag Me To Hell - Arrivals

Alison Lohman stars in Drag Me To Hell, a horror movie about a really, really bad business decision.

Lohman plays a loan officer named Christine aspiring to be branch manager. She tries to impress the boss with her ability to make tough decision by, against her warm hearted instincts, turning down a loan extension to an old, gypsy woman.

Long story short, gypsy woman gets ticked off, follows Lohman to her car, attacks her, and puts a curse on her forever that ultimately results in Lohman falling onto train tracks before demons grab her and pull her into the pits of hell.

Before her demise, Lohman tries to undue her curse and save herself from damnation by sacrificing her pet kitten. Uncool. Very, uncool.

She again does something against her convictions, replying, “But I’m a vegetarian,” when told the evil spirits are kitty soul hungry.

What have we learned from this people?

1. Be nice to others during hard times and a recession. They just might curse you and your sky high interest rate.

2. Don’t forgo your vegetarian convictions because you think it will save your soul. Because you’ll be damned anyway. And in hell there are irate kitties, waiting to take their aggression out on you after putting up with years of the dog and toddler dressing them up in lingerie.

Note: Alison Lohman is a vegetarian and environmentalist in real life who would never sacrifice a cat in exchange for her soul.

ER has closed its final hospital room curtain, but Noah Wyle’s presence on the set for years most certainly helped the show become an Emmy award winning hit. Hospital cafeterias aren’t exactly known for their delicious food, so plan on getting your veggie burger or any other meal elsewhere. So between the two gentlemen, who would you rather do…

PETA To Amitabh Bachchan: Go Veg To Go Green At IIFA Event!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 27th, 2009 in Actors, Bollywood, Environment-Eco-Green.

Chandni Chowk To China UK Premiere In London

Amitabh Bachchan is a longtime vegetarian and PETA wants him to encourage others to do so by serving only vegetarian food at an India International Film Academy (IIFA) event in Macau, China next month.

After all, the theme for the event is “Go-Green,” and what environmentalist doesn’t know by now that meat isn’t environmentally friendly.

PETA India chief functionary Anuradha Sawhney sent a letter to Bachchan containing the following statement:

“We were thrilled to hear that this year’s IIFA Awards are going to have a ‘Go Green’ theme, and we commend you for helping to once again draw attention to the global climate crisis. On behalf of PETA India and all our members and supporters, we respectfully ask you to serve only green (vegetarian) food at the event.”

“By doing so, you will send a strong message that people can save the planet simply by changing their dietary habits.”

Do you know any environmentalists who really haven’t “gone green all the way” yet? Are they missing the connection between wasted land and energy in raising farm animals for human food consumption (not to mention other animal consumption)?

Get in the game and drop them a little note like the one sent to Bachchan! Some one’s gotta remind them that meat’s not green!

Chrissie Hynde Joins PETA Protest Of KFC

Let’s face it, animal rights activists have to have thick skin.

When your motives are questioned, your tactics are ridiculed, and the cops are just waiting to shackle you at the slightest feeling the peaceful protest is turning ugly, it takes a lot of balls to get up routinely and stand up for creatures who cannot.

Not to mention those insane outfits!

From priests to fake bloody meat to animals to even getting downright naked, animal rights activists show no shame in dressing for the occasion to get the point across. Not a problem at all for vegan singer Chrissie Hynde.

“I don’t mind standing next to a guy dressed as a carrot chanting, ‘We’re not leaving ’til the cows come home,” Hynde told the Sunday Mail.

Or, standing next to a KFC chicken.

“If you’re willing to make a bit of a fool of yourself to make your point – that’s what you have to do.”

Whether it’s protesting KFC, McDonald’s or the mulesing industry, Chrissie has proven she never fails to pay her dues to the fools’ club.
