Hunter Burgan: Animals Don’t Wear Shoes With Human Glue

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, January 16th, 2009 in Fashion, Male Musicians, Videos.

Find out more about Hunter Burgan at peta2.com.

Hunter Burgan has been (veganly) eating up the spotlight since he’s become Vegan Ambassador for MacBeth shoes.

He sat down with Peta2 for an interview about his recent promotion:

Why was it important for you to design an all-vegan shoe, even down to the glue used?
First off, have you ever worn a pair of shoes without glue? They just fall apart. So, if they are going to use glue, it’s going to have to be vegan glue. You know, animals don’t wear shoes with human glue—it’s just disrespectful.

Makes perfect sense.

You can watch Hunter’s MacBeth video above and see him doing a spastic like dance before taking out an umbrella to protect himself from-you guessed it-raining shoes.

You can also enter a contest to win a pair of Hunter’s new shoes and an iPod nano, but you must do so before February 2nd.

Paul McCartney poses for photos during an impromptu photo op in NYC

Paul McCartney was a guest on the Howard Stern show recently. After hearing “Howard Stern,” you know immediately the show was at least a little PG, as evident in the transcript over at the Examiner.

Stern told his vegan sidekick, Robin Quivers, to “show Paul her breasts.” McCartney, being the gentleman he is, immediately protested, to which Quivers responded, “I’ve been rejected by Paul McCartney.”

McCartney is in the U.S. to attend the inauguration next week and Quivers tried to smooth talk her way into coming along by reminding him of their shared interests.

“I’m a vegan, too. Take me to the inauguration. Kids love me.” Paul is only vegetarian, but close enough.

Neither breasts, nor shared diet could win over Paul, but he did share some insight on why he feels it’s okay to eat dairy, such as eggs.

When Stern asked, “Isn’t an egg a chicken abortion?” Paul replied it wasn’t and said “We don’t like to think of it like that.”

Hens abandon their eggs in nature, so that’s why it’s okay and not animal cruelty, he explained.

Time for you vegans to shout out! What do you think about Paul’s rationale? Some say that meat is okay because animals kill each other in nature. Is his argument similar?

Speak now. And if you want to give your opinion on if he should have looked at Robin’s breasts, that’s fine too.

Vegan Author John Robbins Victim Of Maddoff’s Ponzi Scheme

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, January 14th, 2009 in Authors.

Before there was Skinny Bitch author Rory Freedman, there was John Robbins advocating how a vegan diet was better for maintaining health, healthy weight, and a healthy planet through books such as Healthy at 100, The Food Revolution, and Diet for a New America.

He is currently facing financial crisis after learning that he and his wife lost their entire life savings in the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme.

In an attempt to scrape by, the Robbins have resorted to renting out rooms in their home, according to Patti Breitman on VegSource:

“To economize, the family has rented out every extra room in their house and every spare space on their property. Still, it is not clear if they will be able to pay their mortgage or keep the property they share with their son, his wife and their two grandsons.”

“I cannot imagine a man who has had a greater positive influence on the vegetarian movement than John Robbins. Because of his books, countless people around the world have changed their way of eating, dressing, and relating to animals. Because of the integrity he has shown in his life, countless people have found the courage to turn down job opportunities and great financial gain if the work caused harm to others.”

Ironically, although he preached otherwise, Robbins was the very object of work that caused harm to others.

Wishing him and his family the best as they fight to recover from this tragedy.

Ellen DeGeneres Makes Parade Magazine’s Veg Slide Show

35th Annual People's Choice Awards - Portraits

But Gwyneth Paltrow did too, so we’re not sure how much of a compliment this is to newly vegan Ellen.

Parade Magazine has compiled a slide show of celebrity vegetarians and vegan Ellen DeGeneres made the meatless cut.

Before Ellen even turned vegan she was huge supporter of animal issues, such as Prop 2. She also recommends eating organic and local.

Other celebrities featured include honeymooner Woody Harrelson, Paul McCartney, and Alicia Silverstone.

Some of Parade’s readers think the list doesn’t best represent Hollywood’s vegetarians, and notables like vegan Natalie Portman are absent.

Even Gwyneth Paltrow is still winning veggie trophies, much to some readers’ dismay. As one person commented on the site:

Gwyneth Paltrow is not a vegetarian. What vegetarian would discuss cooking a turkey on Thanksgiving?! Which she did on her website.

Ah, nothing quite like the truth.

Vega training: part one of four from Brendan Brazier on Vimeo.

Brendan Brazier is a vegan Ironman triathlete who invented the Vega nutrition and energy products-completely plant based items that he started making as young as 15 years of age.

He met up with cartoonist and fellow vegan Dan Piraro one day who revealed that when he’s stuck in a creative rut, it helps to go on a long bike ride to get the ideas flowing again.

Brazier receives similar mental charges after running.

“I find it is really helpful when I go for a run,” he said. “I wrote most of The Thrive Diet while I was running. All of the ideas and the thoughts would seem to organize themselves, and when I got home, I would write them down.”

A component of his new book, Thrive Fitness: Mental and Physical Strength for Life, is teaching how exercises like “biking, hiking, in-line skating, rowing, running, speed skating, swimming, and brisk walking” fuel your right brain and release your creativity side.

Take a look at the video Brazier filmed about Vega. You’ll find it comforting to know he eats his own products, chowing down on an energy bar.

Now if you’ll excuse us, we need to go on a hike before posting again.

Chef Heather Mills Gives Vegan Cooking Lessons

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, January 12th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Models.

Heather Mills Hosts Healthy Meal Cook-A-Thon with students in The Bronx

Heather Mills was a busy woman in New York this past weekend, giving vegan cooking demonstrations and lessons to families and children living in the Bronx.

Before she put on her chef hat, Heather made a stop by “The Today Show.” If you haven’t already watched the video of her chatting with Matt Lauer, Al Roker (who is also a chef), and the crew, it’s something you don’t want to miss.

As part of her ongoing efforts to contribute to her charity to Hunts Point Alliance for Children (HPAC), Heather taught families of children of John V. Lindsay Charter School how to prepare healthy, vegan food.

The meals will also be served at the “No Beef Teen Cafes” run by HPAC and other community organizations. The community Heather is working with is considered to have one of the highest rates of diabetes and asthma and many living in poverty.

“As a mother I see firsthand the benefits of healthy eating and I’m thrilled the families of Hunts Point are embracing these delicious vegan foods that I’ve loved for so many years” Mills said. “Working with these children here is truly rewarding and a lot of fun.”

Last year, Heather donated a million dollars worth of vegan food to Hunts Point Children Alliance.
