Michael Pollan On Animal Rights, Oprah And Meat Eating

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, April 14th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Authors, Flexitarian, Food & Drink.

Quintessentially Host A Special Screening Of Magnolia Pictures' "FOOD INC"

Author Michael Pollan hasn’t always expressed warm feelings for the vegetarian and vegan community, but in a recent interview with Time magazine, he said he has “enormous respect for vegetarians,” and eats a lot less meat than in the past.

In an exclusive interview with the Huffington Post, Pollan gave his thoughts on animal rights, criticizer of factory farming and author Jonathan Safran Foer and even Oprah.

That’s quite a combination, and here are a few highlights.

On Foer and “Eating Animals”
In terms of the argument that I don’t grapple with meat, I would refer Jonathan and anyone else to Chapter…hold on, I can dig it out… (flips through book)…it’s a very long…Chapter 17 of Omnivore’s Dilemma, “The Ethics of Eating Animals.” And that is where I try to grapple with the best arguments against meat eating, which in my view are Peter Singer’s arguments, and defend a very limited kind of meat eating, which is the kind I do.

On Animal Rights:
I think one of the changes you’ve seen in the animals right’s community in the last five or ten years is a lot more interest in mitigating the worst abuses of animal agriculture …which I think is a more realistic goal than abolition.

On Oprah Winfrey:
She had a very bad run-in with the cattle industry, and she doesn’t want to spend any more time in court, so it was much to her credit and it took a certain courage for her to air the issues and show clips from Food Inc., especially, and to have me on, and the fact that she was willing to re-engage on these issues of factory farming was all to her credit.

Oprah Magazine Live Your Best Walk Benefits Animal Sanctuary

German Erotic Magazine Sues Oprah''s "O" Magazine

O, The Oprah Magazine has named Best Friends Animal Society one of the 10 non profit organizations that will benefit from its Live Your Best walk on May 9.

Best Friends Animal Society is the nation’s largest shelter for abused and abandoned animals.

Given the fact that Oprah herself was named Person of the Year for her contribution to animals by featuring adoption and factory farm segments on her show, it’s no surprise an animal organization made the top 10 cut.

The Live Your Best walk is part of a three day celebration in New York to commemorate the magazine’s 10th anniversary.

Has it really been that long?

Hats off to The Oprah Magazine for celebrating its success by giving animals a chance at some.

Todd Wilbur Needed To Investigate Vegetarian Menu Items

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 31st, 2010 in Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Todd Wilbur

Todd Wilbur

Todd Wilbur, author of Top Secret Recipes, has a knack for duplicating entrees from restaurants like Olive Garden or Applebee’s without getting the written instructions.

His cloning of the Big Mac and other classics has sold him several million books and earned him appearances on Oprah, MTV News and Live with Regis and Kathy Lee.

To get recipes down, Wilbur will try several tricks, such as sitting really close to the kitchen to watch (you’d think the places would learn to recognize him and give him the boot) and even pretending to be a strict vegetarian or vegan to see if an item has animal ingredients in it.

Vegetarians could sure use him in a restaurant audit.

Hidden items like egg whites and chicken broth discovered in your favorite dish a year after you eat it religiously would happen no more if Wilbur served as veg detective, uncovering the truth at mainstream eateries that offer veggie items and even meatless restaurants which make vegan claims about that macaroni and cheese that still leaves your stomach feeling like you had a shot of lactose.

“I found this niche that made [cooking] fun and different and a game,” Wilbur told Las Vegas Weekly. “And that’s what I like — games,” Wilbur says. “I haven’t gone through Dumpsters yet, but I’m not above that.”

With all the fiber consumed from healthy vegetarian food like fruits and vegetables and beans and rice, you’ll always have art to showcase to your friends and family.

Oprah’s not vegan, but she did try the diet for 21 days as part of a cleansing.

Bet she misses the good ol’ days of plentiful poop.
