Allison Moorer And Baby To Be Crave Ricotta Gnocchi

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, March 30th, 2010 in Female Musicians, Female Singers, Food & Drink.

Special Screening Of Leaves Of Grass - Arrivals

Allison Moorer has had a lot of other things on her mind lately than deciding what to cook for dinner (like what to name the new baby, what diapers to use, deciding who between she and husband Steve Earle will wake up in the middle of the night to change one).

To make things easier on herself, Moorer’s been eating dinner out and giving into whatever she and little one to come is craving for the evening.

The alternative country singer told Black Book Mag, “We’ve been doing this like go out to dinner a lot lately, so we won’t think about, ‘When is the baby going to come?’ So we went to Union Square Café last night, which is fantastic. I’m vegetarian. I had this incredible ricotta gnocchi, which I think is a regular item on the menu.We just went to Babbo Monday night, which is great. Our neighborhood is ridiculously good for food.”

Sounds like Moorer is one of those vegetarian women who didn’t head for the steakhouse when another lifeform started growing inside of her.

Amazing!

Carol Leifer Or Herschel Walker–Who Would You

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 24th, 2010 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Comedians, Reality TV.

Celebrity Apprentice hasn’t been too nice to vegetarians, as the potential CEOs have been given the “You’re Fired” order with neither a fruit basket nor a severance package.

This season comedian Carol Leifer was the first to go (but she did squeeze some money out of Donald for an animal charity), while Herschel Walker got the pink slip after he failed trying to make executive decisions about chicken when he doesn’t even eat it.

Better luck next time guys.

A business lunch is still available. Between the two contestants, who would you rather do…

Ginnifer Goodwin Writes In Protest Of “Happy Cow” CMAB Ads

Antonio Banderas, Tippi Hedren and Melanie Griffith at the The 24th Genesis Awards in LA

You’ve seen those commercials for “Happy Cows” sponsored by the California Milk Advisory Board where cows are seen roaming freely in the pasture, females get a chance to gossip while the bulls attempt to speak French in hopes procreating before slaughter time.

Not everyone agrees with the idyllic picture portrayed by the CMAB and Big Love actress Ginnifer Goodwin has written her thoughts to the Federal Trade Commission regarding what animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says are deceptive practices in these campaigns.

“In show business, we often have good reason for making people believe things that aren’t true, but there is no excuse for the CMAB’s misrepresentation of the milk industry,” writes Goodwin. “[C]onsumers deserve better than to be fed cheerful lies about ‘happy cows.'”

Goodwin goes on to say that the reality is most cows in California are confined in crammed spaces filled with dirt and their own excrement, and suffer udder infections as a result of being forced to produce unnatural amounts of milk induced through administering drugs.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 24th, 2010 in Actresses, Food & Drink, TV Hosts, Videos.

Alicia Silverstone visited Jimmy Fallon for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and brought along some vegan food from NYC restaurants Pure Food and Wine,Candle 79 and Sacred Chow.

Alicia explains to Jimmy what seitan is, and its benefits.

Fallon samples a tempeh reuben, but cautions against tasting it at first in case there’s real mayonnaise, something Fallon says “taste like pus.”

“Which is fair, because that’s what dairy is,” Alicia says. “Dairy is pus and blood.”

Thankfully, it’s all vegan, no pus and delicious.

Gandhi, Pythagoras And Other Great Vegetarians In History

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, October 8th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Misc Artists and Performers.

Young Gandhi

Treehugger has compiled a slideshow of some of the greatest vegetarians in history.

Gandhi’s birthday was celebrated earlier this month, and from his views on non-violence and the treatment of animals, it’s no surprise he made the list.

“Including Mohandas Gandhi in a group of vegetarians seems almost too obvious. Even so, such a list would not be complete without mentioning the famous advocate of non-violence. Gandhi wrote extensively about vegetarianism and once said that “I do feel that spiritual progress does demand at some stage that we should cease to kill our fellow creatures for the satisfaction of our bodily wants.”

“October 2 is Gandhi’s birthday’s which is an excellent reason to eliminate meat from your diet, or at least skip it for the day. Whether you are motivated by a respect for the man, your compassion for animals, or, as many environmentalists are, a concern over the resource intensive nature the livestock industry, you will make a powerful statement and make one step towards being “the change you wish to see in the world.”

But there are several others in history you might not have known were vegs.

Pythagoras didn’t just invent those triangle theories to damn you in Geometry. The animal rights activist in Greece believed that “animals share with us the privilege of having a soul” and “for as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.”
